  • von Manny Lawton
    35,00 €

Manny Lawton was a twenty-three-year-old Army captain on April 8, 1942, when orders came to surrender to the Japanese forces invading the Philippine Islands. The next day, he and his fellow American and Filipino prisoners set out on the infamous Bataan Death March--a forced six-day, sixty-mile trek under a broiling tropical sun during which approximately eleven thousand men died or were bayoneted, clubbed, or shot to death by the Japanese. Yet terrible as the Death March was, for Manny Lawton and his comrades it was only the beginning. When the war ended in August 1945, it is estimated that some 57 percent of the American troops who had surrendered on Bataan had perished. But this is not a chronicle of despair. It is, instead, the story of how men can suffer even the most desperate conditions and, in their will to retain their humanity, triumph over appalling adversity. An epic of quiet heroism, Some Survived is a harrowing, poignant, and inspiring tale that lifts the heart.

A striking and engrossing account of one of the most devastating religious wars to ever befall Europe: the great Catholic-Protestant clash which saw at least 40 percent of the population of Germany killed. The work's written style makes this book not a dry history but a dramatic and attention-holding story, starting with an account of the origin of the conflict, and how these differences spiraled out of control into what became the possible one of Europe's most devastating wars of all time. The study also reveals how divisions within the Protestant forces--between Calvinists and Lutherans--allowed the Catholic forces to gain the upper hand, and how foreign powers-both Protestant and Catholic-sent invading armies to support their allied religious factions. By the end of the war, armies from Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, Spain, and France had tramped across Germany."Outrages of unspeakable atrocity were committed everywhere. Human beings were driven naked into the streets, their flesh pierced with needles, or cut to the bone with saws. Others were scalded with boiling water or hunted with fierce dogs. The horrors of a town taken by storm were repeated every day in the open country. Even apart from its excesses, the war itself was terrible enough."When Augsburg was besieged by the imperialists, after their victory at Nördlingen, it contained an industrious population of 70,000 souls. After a siege of seven months, 10,000 living beings, wan and haggard with famine, remained to open the gates to the conquerors . . ."The losses of the civil population were almost incredible. In a certain district of Thuringia which was probably better off than the greater part of Germany, there were, before the war cloud burst, 1,717 houses standing in nineteen villages. In 1649, only 627 houses were left. And even of the houses which remained many were untenanted. The 1,717 houses had been inhabited by 1,773 families. Only 316 families could be found to occupy the 627 houses."This new edition has been completely reformatted, reset, indexed, and contains fifteen new illustrations.

Frank Knox served as Secretary of the Navy during some of the most eventful years in U.S. naval history, his tenure coinciding with a number of dramas such as the innovative 1940 bases-for-destroyers initiative (which he conceptualized prior to entering the administration), the undeclared naval war in the Atlantic against Germany¿s U-boats in 1941, the December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, the subsequent naval war in the Pacific, and naval landings in North Africa and Italy. Knox¿s most important contribution to the war effort was his leadership in building a 1,000-ship fleet, without which the much-heralded landings and battles might never have been possible. In this comprehensive biography, Christopher D. O¿Sullivan offers a portrait of the Roughrider in FDR¿s cabinet.

This book explores how the eponymous and original Lingua Franca was recognized as a potential linguistic template for future military and colonial pidgins. The author traces the career trajectory of General Louis Faidherbe, a member of the French colonizing force in Algiers in the early 1830s and a recognized linguist, who rose up through the ranks in various African colonies and was the founder of regiments in West Africa, including the Senegal-based tirailleurs. Their artificially constructed military pidgin, Français Tirailleur, was a language modelled on the reduced grammar and lexicon of Lingua Franca. This book demonstrates the direct link between the two languages, as well as connections with other colonial pidgins in Asia that also derived to some extent from Lingua Franca. It will be of interest to students and scholars of language contact and language history, pidgins and creoles, and military and colonial history.

  • von David Harper

As a WWII tour director for thirty-five years, David Harper has repeatedly heard the same questions from an extremely varied American and British audience: ¿Why did the Germans vote for Hitler? Did they know about the concentration camps? What did German soldiers and members of the SS feel about the extermination camps and the war crimes they were committing? How do today¿s Germans view Hitler and the Third Reich? What is the country doing at present to address those dark pages of its history and to remember the victims of Hitler¿s regime? Do the right-wing demonstrations in Germany portend a resurgence of Nazi ideology today?¿ All these questions and many more are addressed in Exposing the Reich. The book seeks to promote an understanding of how the devastation and tragedy of the war and the concurrent genocide could happen. It studies the lethal blend of inciting hatred, ongoing indoctrination, justification for drastic action, and the complete control of all media. How many people know, for instance, that Hitler was writing an opera when he lived in Vienna or how he developed his antisemitic outlook while living there? Few know about the early political and ideological influences on Hitler¿s worldview, such as those instigated by his little-known mentor, Eckart. Who has ever heard about Hitler¿s ¿second book,¿ in which he revealed his major foreign policy plans, a manuscript that remained secret? How many realize that Hitler¿s regime planned on replacing Christianity with its own ¿religion¿ and substituting Mein Kampf for the Bible? Why did Hitler name his regime the ¿Third¿ Reich, and why did he choose the swastika as its logo? Why did the fine arts enjoy such an honored status during the Reich? What were the lesser-known original purposes of the concentration camp system established in Germany just weeks after Hitler seized power? Who realizes that, just prior to Hitler seizing power, the Jewish population in Germany was a mere 0.7%?These, and countless more insights regarding the Third Reich, are revealed in Exposing the Reich. From young students to well-informed history buffs, readers will gain a wealth of new insights into Hitler and his regime of terror.

The scale and organisation of the Roman army was unprecedented in the ancient Western world. This book tells the story of everyday aspects of the army in the heyday of the Roman Empire ¿ from life in a tent to the food soldiers consumed ¿ and explains its hierarchy, roles, equipment and place in a vast multi-ethnic society divided between citizens and subjects. Through this social evolution, the army gradually transformed the state it was established to protect. Innovations in military training and technology, including medicine, allowed common Roman soldiers to be as well-equipped as their generals and to have realistic prospects of surviving the 25 years of military service. This book dispels preconceived notions about the Roman army ¿ for example, that forts were exclusively the domain of male soldiers ¿ and addresses the violence committed by soldiers towards women, conquered subjects and enslaved peoples. The risks of becoming a soldier are also explored, especially the consequences for convicted soldiers (decimation, crucifixion or becoming amphitheatre entertainment). Most importantly, readers will discover a vivid picture of what life was really like in the Roman army, including how soldiers signed up and were trained; what life was like in tents, forts, and on the battlefield; and soldiers¿ dress, diets, health and relationships.

Pacific Fortress, A History of the Seacoast Defenses of Hawaii is a revealing historical account of the U.S. Army's coastal defenses of Oahu. This work provides a thorough account of both the seacoast and anti-aircraft branches of the Coast Artillery Corps in this important American Pacific base. It presents a detailed chronicle of the building and operation of the defenses from shortly after the territory's occupation in 1907 through the tense pre-war period and the devastating Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 to the impressive wartime enhancements. At its culmination in 1945, Oahu boasted the strongest coast defenses of any American harbor. Compiling research from the National Archives and many primary sources this work describes in great detail the defensive plans as well as the fortifications built between 1904 and 1945. Consequently, it is simultaneously a "unit" history (the Coast Defense units stationed in the islands), a weapon /technical history (the artillery in the fixed gun batteries) and a combat history. The text is supported with thorough referenced endnotes, a bibliography, and eleven appendices listing all fortification sites. This 450-page, hardcover book is heavily illustrated with over 460 maps, plans, and period photographs, this work is the most comprehensive coverage of these defenses ever offered in print. The author, Glen M. Williford, has contributed an important addition to the body of knowledge on these historical defenses. It is a worthy companion to the earlier publication, Pacific Rampart, A History of Corregidor and the Harbor Defenses of Manila and Subic Bays by the same author and publishing team. Readers of both military and Hawaiian history will find this coverage fascinating.
