This is a book about survival. It is a book about a 21 year old Army Scout pilot shot down during the Vietnam War on a Scout mission well inside North Vietnamese controlled territory in Cambodia.He along with his two crew members, his Observer and his Door Gunner, were shot down on 10 March 1971.They were hit by a B-40 Rocket Propelled Grenade or an SA-7 missile. The pilot, WO1 Craig (Jeff) Houser immediately lost engine power and then realized he had no cyclic control. The burning aircraft passed over a river and crashed into the trees above the riverbank, exploded on impact, and then fell into the river and sank.He never saw his two crew members: Observer SP4 Robert T. Kiser or Door Gunner Sgt. Curtis R. Smoot again. After almost drowning, Houser managed to somehow get out of the wreckage of the aircraft on the bottom of the river and swim to the river bank.This was then the beginning of what turned out to be four days of Escape and Evasion. He was burned and blinded (totally blinded in one eye and loss of most of his vision in the other) by the crash. Most of his survival equipment was now on the bottom of the river. He had no food, no medicine, and no water. It was now the dry season in this area of Southeast Asia and other than the river he crashed in, all the intermittent streams and creeks were dried up.First he had to keep from being captured, that was the primary goal.It is absolutely a true story of survival against all odds.

The outbreak of violence in Rwanda 1904 was neither an anti-colonial Hutu uprising nor the result of a royal court intrigue against German rule, but instead a response to raids, the White Father missionaries had carried out against the local population. German colonialism in Rwanda was much less benevolent than it is today recalled in Rwanda, because its main edge was directed against the population in the North whose collective memory has been marginalized in the royal abanyiginya narrative, under colonial rule and after the genocide. Thomas Fritta Haas kam 1941 in Prag im Protektorat Böhmen und Mähren zur Welt. Seine ersten bewussten Erinnerungen stammen von der Kleinen Festung in Theresienstadt, wo er - als jüngster politischer Häftling - die Befreiung erlebte. Seine Mutter starb dort kurz vor Kriegsende, sein Vater, der bekannte Maler Bedrich Friita/Friedrich Taussig, bereits Ende 1944 in Auschwitz.Zu Thomas' drittem Geburtstag hatte sein Vater, der auch die Zeichnerwerkstatt in Theresienstadt leitete, ein Buch für seinen Sohn gezeichnet, das in einer Blechdose in der Erde vergraben den Krieg überlebte. Anhand der darin enthaltenen Bilder und mit Hilfe einiger weniger Menschen, die seine Eltern kannten und die die Lager überlebt hatten, machte sich Thomas eine Vorstellung von seiner Mutter und seinem Vater.Nach dem Krieg wurde er von Erna und Leo Haas, ebenfalls ein berühmter Maler, Karikaturist und Schoah-Überlebender, adoptiert, doch schon mit 14 Jahren blieb er wieder allein. Ab 1968 lebte er in Israel, später in Mannheim. Mit seiner Frau Vera und den vier Kindern führte er ein erfülltes Leben.Seit seinen Jugendjahren hatte er außerdem eine "Familie" in der Jüdischen Gemeinde in Prag gefunden - Freunde, die ihn sein ganzes Leben, auch in der Emigration, begleiteten. Zu ihnen zählt auch die Autorin Vera Trnka, deren Eltern das Baby Thomas noch aus dem Ghetto kannten. Thomas Fritta Haas bezeichnete sich selbst als "glücklichen Waisen". Er starb 2015 in Mannheim.

Salomons Sohn Simon gründete die Simon-Hirschland-Bank, dessen Sohn Isaac war der "Bänker" von Essen. Gemeinsam finanzierten sie die boomende Ruhrindustrie. Isaacs Söhne Kurt und Georg erlebten nach sensationellen Erfolgen die Vernichtung der immensen Lebensleistung von vier Generationen.Mit größtem Einsatz versuchte die Familie nach ihrer Flucht möglichst viele Juden aus Nazi-Deutschland zu retten und errichtete dafür ein Rettungswerk. Doch Bitternis und tiefste Enttäuschung blieben zurück.

Jahrzehntelang vertrat der Berliner jüdische Politiker und Diplomat Richard Lichtheim (1885-1963) die Interessen der Zionisten gegenüber den herrschenden Mächten der Zeit. Als Emissär der Zionistischen Organisation bemühte er sich während des Zweiten Weltkriegs vom schweizerischen Genf aus um die Rettung verfolgter Juden und verstand dabei als einer der ersten zeitgenössischen Beobachter, dass es sich bei den nationalsozialistischen Massenmorden an den europäischen Judenheiten um ein Verbrechen ungekannten Ausmaßes handelte: um ihre systematische und totale Vernichtung. Zuvor hatte Lichtheim während des Ersten Weltkriegs im osmanischen Konstantinopel gewirkt, wo es ihm durch geschicktes Verhandeln gelungen war, die Maßnahmen der repressiven jungtürkischen Minderheitenpolitik von der jüdischen Ansiedlung in Palästina abzuwenden. Die sich wandelnde politische Realität in Europa und Palästina brachte Lichtheim immer wieder dazu, auch die eigenen Nationalismusvorstellungen zu überdenken: Verfocht er in der Zwischenkriegszeit noch die Maximalforderungen der Zionisten-Revisionisten, wurde er vor dem Hintergrund des Holocaust schließlich ein Anhänger der linksliberalen Partei Aliya Hadasha. This is the wartime diary of 492499 Private Fred Fish, of 60th Division 2/13th London Regiment (2nd Kensingtons) and 179 Light Trench Mortar Battery. Während für die deutschen Soldaten noch Durchhalteparolen bis zur letzten Patrone ausgegeben wurden, verschwanden hohe NS-Funktionäre und KZ-Führer tauchten unter. Ab 1946 setzte eine Fluchtwelle von SS-Tätern und Nationalsozialisten nach Übersee ein und erreichte 1948/49 ihren Höhepunkt. Eine Besonderheit stellte die Rattenlinie Nord dar, da diese nicht aus Europa heraus führte, sondern nach Schleswig-Holstein in Richtung Flensburg verlief, KZ-Kommandanten, SS-Angehörige, hohe Nazifunktionäre erreichten zu Hunderten die Stadt. Hier gab es für sie neue Ausweispapiere und neue Uniformen. Aus Massenmördern wurden einfache Soldaten. Begünstigt durch das alliierte Interesse an einer funktionsfähigen Polizei fanden nach 1945 zahlreiche SS- und Gestapo-Funktionäre bei der Kriminalpolizei eine neue berufliche Existenz. Die bestehenden Netzwerke und alten Seilschaften der Nazis funktionierten zuverlässig. Die Justizbehörden entwickelten sich ebenfalls zu Tummelplätzen für ehemalige NS-Funktionäre. Belastete Juristen hatten im Westen kaum strafrechtliche Konsequenzen zu befürchten, die meisten der schon in der NS-Zeit tätigen Juristen im höheren Justizdienst machten weiter Karriere. Die Justiz sprach sich selbst frei. Die Aufarbeitung der nationalsozialistischen Vergangenheit wurde von den meisten Deutschen rundweg abgelehnt - eine Vergangenheitsbewältigung fand so gut wie gar nicht statt. Die Phase des Übergangs vom Nationalsozialismus zur Bundesrepublik wies geradeso Kontinuitäten im Bereich der politischen Funktionsträger auf. Die Karriere von Heinz Reinefarth, Bürgermeister von Westerland auf Sylt, sucht in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland ihresgleichen, denn Reinefarth war der einzige ehemalige SS-General, der jemals in einen deutschen Landtag einzog. Etliche vergangenheitspolitische Skandale erschütterten Schleswig-Holstein, neben dem Fall Reinefarth die Fälle Lautz, Schlegelberger, Oberheuser, Catel und Heyde-Sawade. Schleswig-Holstein sorgte mit seinem braunen Erbe überregional und international für Aufsehen und für Schlagzeilen, die seinen Ruf als brauner Sumpf oder braunes Naturschutzgebiet begründeten. Die angestrebte Entnazifizierung der jungen Bundesrepublik war gescheitert.
