  • - A New History of the Battle of Britain
von Jeremy A. Crang & Paul Addison
    28,00 €

It was, of course, the Battle of Britain, or rather its conclusion, that prompted one of Winston Churchill's most memorable pieces of oratory that has its epitome in the sentence, 'Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.' If the Battle of Britain had been lost it is very likely the New Order to which the Axis powers had pledged themselves would have become global with unthinkable consequences for the world afterwards. The importance of the Battle of Britain cannot be exaggerated though inevitably in the succeeding years the accretion of myth has brought about many distortions. This multi-faceted symposium emerged from the Centre of Second World War Studies at Edinburgh University with the aim, in the words of the editors, 'to reassess established themes while opening up new ones.' After a masterly introduction by Brian Bond, the book is divided into six parts: Before the Battle; The Battle; The View from Afar; Experience and Memory; The Making of a British Legend and The Significance. The contributors are: Klaus A. Maier; Malcolm Smith; Horst Boog; Sebastian Cox; Sergei Kudryshov; Richard P. Hallion; Theodore F. Cook; Hans-Ekkehard Bob; Wallace Cunningham; Nigel Rose; Owen Dudley Edwards; Angus Calder; Tony Aldgate; Adrian Gregory; Jeremy Lake and John Schofield; Paul Addison and Jeremy A. Crang and Richard Overy. No survey could be more wide-ranging or fascinating. First published in 2000 to mark the 60th anniversary, it is now being reissued in 2010 to mark the 70th anniversary.'But it is terrific. It's not only an acknowledgement of the heroism of the fighter pilots (and all the ancillary crew), but a serious contribution to the historical record. Seventeen contributors write about the Battle from pretty much every conceivable angle; and Addison and Crang have chosen them well. . . This is not an automatically worshipful book; it poses questions about the morality of war, the existence of heroism, the reliability of memory. But it treats the subject honestly and with justice. And it tells us why we won: because, it would appear, it helps to come from a society that is sceptical of authority rather than in blind, unthinking terror of it.' Nicholas Lezard, Guardian''This book is a first-class piece of work, stimulating, informative and concise.' Brian Holden Reid, Times Higher Education Supplement.'This is a nugget of a book . . . it assembles, most readably, a range of authoritative and international views on the Battle, its history, and its significance.' Air Chief Marshall Sir Michael Graydon, Royal United Services Institute'This is a much told story, but the varied viewpoints of the 20 contributors to Burning Blue - ranging from a fascinating essay by Owen Dudley Edwards on the air war as reflected in children's literaturer to the memories of pilots who fought in it on both sides - give an impressive breadth and depth. And even though it strips away hindsight and refuses to burnish legends, what is left is still one of the most remarkable stories in the whole of British history. The British empire didn't last a thousand years, but the man was right: this truly was its finest hour.' David Robinson, The Scotsman

  • - Germany's Forgotten Genocide and the Colonial Roots of Nazism
von Casper Erichsen & David Olusoga
    17,00 €

On 12 May 1883, the German flag was raised on the coast of South-West Africa, modern Namibia - the beginnings of Germany's African Empire. As colonial forces moved in , their ruthless punitive raids became an open war of extermination. Thousands of the indigenous people were killed or driven out into the desert to die. By 1905, the survivors were interned in concentration camps, and systematically starved and worked to death.Years later, the people and ideas that drove the ethnic cleansing of German South West Africa would influence the formation of the Nazi party. The Kaiser's Holocaust uncovers extraordinary links between the two regimes: their ideologies, personnel, even symbols and uniform. The Herero and Nama genocide was deliberately concealed for almost a century. Today, as the graves of the victims are uncovered, its re-emergence challenges the belief that Nazism was an aberration in European history. The Kaiser's Holocaust passionately narrates this harrowing story and explores one of the defining episodes of the twentieth century from a new angle. Moving, powerful and unforgettable, it is a story that needs to be told.

    von Douglas Brode
    45,00 €

FROM HELL TO HOLLYWOOD: An Encyclopedia of Warld War II Films offers the most comprehensive illustrated guide ever assembled for theatrical motion-pictures, English-language and international, dealing with the conflict that consumed America and the globe during the mid-20th century. Though United States official involvement did not begin until December, 1941, following the bombing of Pearl Harbor by Japan’s imperial air force, early battles and other precipitous moments, which led to legendary conflicts in Europe and the Pacific, can be traced back through the better part of a decade, many deriving from the unsatisfactory treaties that ended the initial Great War. This book also addresses WWII’s aftermath in America, Asia, and Europe, as varied filmmakers have portrayed that difficult period. In a unique approach to this complex, broad subject, specific films are grouped according to unifying themes that involve varied aspects of ‘The Big Picture.’ These range from training of civilians for a new, updated state-of-the-art armed forces to the impact of warfare on the development of commercial flight, also the unique roles played by spies, People’s Armies, and other misunderstood aspects of the war as writers and directors perceived them then, as well as more recent Revisionist portrayals.Included are hundreds of vivid photos, many never before printed in book form. This work is so immense that it had to be presented in two inter-dependent volumes—a first for Bear Manor Media!  This is volume 2 of 2.DOUGLAS BRODE is a screenwriter, novelist, graphic novelist, produced playwright, multi-award winning journalist, and multi-award winning educator. He created and taught the Film Classics program for The Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University until his retirement. Now Brode concentrates on turning out further books, both fiction and non-fiction. These include Deadlier Than the Male: Femme Fatales in 1960s and 1970s Cinema for Bear Manor Media.

  • - Carrhae to Nisibis, 53 BC-AD 217
    von Si Sheppard
    22,00 €

In 53 BC, Roman and Parthian forces collided in a confrontation that would reshape the geopolitical map and establish a frontier between East and West that would endure for the next 700 years. From the initial clash at Carrhae through to the battle of Nisibis more than 250 years later, Roman and Parthian forces fought a series of bloody campaigns for mastery of the Fertile Crescent. As Roman forces thrust ever deeper into the East, they encountered a civilization unlike any they had crossed swords with before. Originating in the steppes of Central Asia, the Parthians ruled a federated state stretching from the Euphrates to the Indus. Although Rome's legions were masters of the battlefield in the Mediterranean, the Parthians refused to fight by the rules as Rome understood them. Harnessing the power of the composite bow and their superior manoeuvrability, the Parthians' mode of warfare focused exclusively on the horse. They inflicted a bloody defeat on the legions at Carrhae and launched their own invasion of Roman territory, countered only with great difficulty by Rome's surviving forces. The Parthians were eventually thrown out, but neither side could sustain a permanent ascendancy over the other and the conflict continued.Packed with stunning artwork, including battlescenes, maps and photographs, this title examines the conflict through the lens of three key battles, revealing a clash between two armies alien to each other not only in culture but also in their radical approaches to warfare.

  • - Battle and Siege Scenes in Detail from Geisberg's German Single Sheet Woodcuts
    von Marion McNealy
    97,00 €

The wars of the 16th century were different from the isolated conflicts of the 15th century, spanning the continent and engaging many different parties at the same time. Emperors Maximilian I and Charles V were challenged on many fronts, externally by the Swiss, French, and Ottoman Turks, along with internal conflicts between the German princes and their people. It was a time of uprisings and invasions, of broken treaties and of instability, religious reformation and rebellions. Some of these conflicts were recorded in woodcut form, and published shortly after they happened. These woodcuts show the Landsknecht and their opponents in action, instead the more commonly seen individual depictions. The book contains scenes from the battles and sieges depicted in the German single sheet woodcuts: Pavia, Vienna, Budapest, and Münster… these along with many others, are all presented as a whole, then each individual plate, and pages of details, magnified for better viewing. There is also a brief description of the battle, and an explanation of the scenes in the woodcuts.

  • - The Great Betrayal
    von Alan Woods
    41,00 €

The story of the Spanish revolution of the 1930s is quite well known to most people on the left, but there is a surprising level of ignorance concerning the events that occurred subsequently. History did not cease with the victory of Franco in 1939. And the story of how the Franco dictatorship was eventually brought down by the revolutionary movement of the Spanish workers is an inspiring one.Under the most difficult and dangerous conditions, Spanish workers launched a strike wave, which, in its intensity and duration, has no parallel anywhere. There was nothing remotely like this in Hitler's Germany, Mussolini's Italy or Salazar's Portugal. This was a genuine revolution, which could and should have gone far further than it did. If it did not finally succeed, that was no fault of the working class. The Spanish revolution of the 1970s was shamefully betrayed by the leaders of the communist and socialist parties, who entered into an agreement with former fascists in order halt the movement in its tracks.Alan Woods participated personally in the last phase of this struggle and was a witness to some of its most decisive moments. Using a wealth of documentary material from the time and also new interviews with key participants in the events, he tears away the thick veil of lies, myths and half-truths to reveal what actually occurred. With new struggles and challenges on the order of the day in Spain and the rest of the world, it is the duty of all conscious workers and revolutionary youth to study the lessons of the past as a necessary precondition for victory in the future. This book is an important contribution to a necessary learning process and is obligatory reading for anyone who is interested in the struggle for socialism today.

  • von Francis Francis McCullagh
    35,00 €

Francis McCullagh opens the window on Mexico in the 1920s, a nation suffering cruel oppression under the ruthless anticlerical government of President Plutarco Elías Calles and General Álvaro Obregón, indirectly aided and abetted by the government of the USA under President Wilson. In this book, the author reveals the harsh realities of life in Mexico, exposing the iniquitous laws devised and imposed on all things Catholic. He examines the real purpose of these laws, and the main personalities involved, and shows how the resultant uprising of the ordinary people, the Cristero War, led to increased government brutality and the martyrdom of many innocent civilians, particularly priests and young Catholic laymen.Red Mexico is a valuable primary source account of a nation persecuted for its religious faith, written by a man of unquestioned courage and integrity, who was there at the time.We are indebted to Bishop Martín Dávila Gándara for his perceptive and informative foreword, and to María Concepción Márquez Sandoval for her detailed historical appendix.

  • von Eoin O'Duffy
    27,00 €

A comprehensive account of the experiences of the volunteer Irish Brigade, founded and led by General Eoin O'Duffy, fighting under the Nationalist flag in the Spanish Civil War (1936-39).The Brigade comprised Irish nationals who, like their leader, regarded the War as primarily a Christian crusade against Communism, with the very survival of Catholic Spain at stake. General O'Duffy, an experienced political activist, soldier, and ex-police Commissioner, was responsible for recruitment and transportation to Spain where the men were barracked at Cáceres, provided with uniforms and received basic military training. The Brigade of some 700 men remained in Spain for about six months, experiencing front-line fighting at La Marañosa and Ciempozuelos, with losses of fifteen dead and many wounded. By this time new Irish law forbade Irish citizens to join the Brigade, and with Nationalist forces well in control, it was time for the Brigade to return to Ireland. In his book the author reveals a deep concern for the welfare of his men, a patriotic love for his country, and a strong devotion to his Catholic faith. He is proud of the courage and demeanour of his troops, echoing the praise received from Spanish military, civil, and religious authorities. History has been ambivalent in its views on the role of the Irish Brigade, but in the words of O'Duffy: "We have been criticised, sneered at, slandered, but truth, charity and justice shall prevail, and time will justify our motives. We seek no praise. We did our duty. We went to Spain."This republication is enriched with a foreword by noted independent academic Michael McCormack, historian and archivist of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

  • von Robert F Boland
    16,00 €

This is not an anti-war book. Rather, the book is about the bad behavior of the US government in Washington, DC, in taking the country into military adventures when it is not necessary. To state that the country should never go to war would be irresponsible. Wars cannot always be avoided. A characteristic of the Unites States foreign policy establishment is their refusal to admit they made a mistake. There are never any consequences for invading the wrong country. The establishment carries on as if everything is okay, and they quickly forget about the dead and crippled. Currently, the US has approximately 800 bases in seventy countries. As of November 2016, the US was dropping bombs on seven different countries. This book does not favor either political party. However, some may disagree. In 1935, retired General Smedley Butler published a small book entitled War Is a Racket, which explained how and why the US Government manipulates the country into various wars and military interventions for power and their own selfish interest. This is an update on General Butler's 1935 book. Most of us have heard or read the following words many times. We are forced to go to war or do a military intervention to save our liberty and freedom, to make the world safe for democracy, a war to end all wars, to save the world from communist or whatever, to protect American lives, to save the world from a country that might possess weapons of mass destruction, etc. This is a book explaining how the United States government manipulated and lied its way into a number of wars and military interventions. This information will not normally be taught in your school history class or viewed on your history channel. This is not conspiracy theory stuff. You can look it all up. This information is available to all citizens if they care to research it. Some of this information may shock you.

  • - Original Edition
    von Smedley D Butler
    13,00 €

"War is a Racket" is marine general, Smedley Butler's classic treatise on why wars are conducted, who profits from them, and who pays the price. Few people are as qualified as General Butler to advance the argument encapsulated in his book's sensational title. When "War is a Racket" was first published in 1935, Butler was the most decorated American soldier of his time. He had lead several successful military operations in the Caribbean and in Central America, as well as in Europe during the First World War. Despite his success and his heroic status, however, Butler came away from these experiences with a deeply troubled view of both the purpose and the results of warfare.

  • - Minifig Battlefields
    von Minifig Battlefields
    39,00 €

The Great War was the first global conflict of the industrial age and launched on a wave of patriotic fervor and optimism. After the commemoration of the 100 years of the start of the Great War and now at the end of World War 1, young people are once again engaging in projects about stories and events on the Western front, rich in content and memories. To continue to connect with the young generation, this first illustrated book charts the events from the beginning to Verdun and the Somme across the muddy battlefields. To present this historical period, this book narrates the history of World War 1 using short re-enactment and scenes built from Minifig Battlefields military figures, the accessories, trenches, battlefields and weaponry used in the campaign as well as other customised Lego pieces.Military tactics before WW1 failed to keep pace with advances in technology. These advances, particularly on the Western Front in Europe, allowed the creation of strong defensive systems such as trenches, while barbed wire, artillery and machine guns, made crossing the ground in between, 'no-mans-land', extremely difficult. It was into this that soldiers of the major powers on the Western Front, the Germans, the French and the British, found themselves placed in 1914, armed only with a rifle, bayonet and grenades. In this book, the Minifig Soldiers with high quality printed uniform designs, and equipped with a wide range of custom 3D printed headgear, weapons and accessories enter the war. Together with field artillery and machine guns, trenches and battlefields, this book charts the Great War from the beginning to Verdun and the Somme, from 1914 to 1916.The imagery throughout this book has been recreated using customised minifigs and accessories from photographs of the period to make it both historically faithful and engaging especially to enthusiasts and younger readers.
