Ils se ruaient à l¿insanité avec une sorte d¿allégresse et de défi, entraînant derrière eux ces stagnants, qui ont peur des mots et de leur ombre, peur de leurs contradicteurs, peur d¿eux-mêmes. Ils appelaient à la rescousse la foule anonyme et ignorante, cette plèbe intellectuelle qüil ne faut pas confondre avec le peuple, et qui n¿a été, au cours de l¿histoire, que la lie irritée de la nation. Il n¿est rien de plus sage, ni de plus raisonnable, que le peuple français dans ses familles, ses besoins, son labeur et ses remarques proverbiales. "

Le Lys dans la vallée est un des romans des Études de m¿urs d¿Honoré de Balzac paru en volume en 1836, s¿insérant, dans l'édition Furne de 1844, dans le deuxième livre Scènes de la vie de campagne de sa grande fresque intitulée La Comédie humaine.Évoquant principalement le château de Saché et ses alentours, en Indre-et-Loire, dont Balzac s¿inspire fortement, ce roman, écrit en partie à Issoudun et à Vienne (Autriche), a été publié pour les deux premières parties (Les Deux Enfances et Les Premières Amours) de novembre à décembre 1835 dans la Revue de Paris. The 27th Iowa Infantry was organized under the proclamation of President Lincoln dated July 2, 1862 at Dubuque, Iowa and mustered in for three years of Federal service on October 3, 1862. The Regiment was in the Army's newly formed Department of the Northwest commanded Major General John Pope at Fort Snelling.The regiment was first ordered to Mille Lacs, Minnesota to oversee distribution of payments and annuities to the Indians. Following this action they spent most of the war fighting in the west except for the time it was ordered to Virginia where it participated in Gettysburg.The 27th continued service in Louisiana and Mississippi and ended the war with the Siege of Mobile.Battle casualties in the regiment were relatively light, but the 27th lost 20% of their men to disease.
