Das Leipziger Land - kaum hundert Meter über dem Meeresspiegel, Ebene, so weit das Auge reicht, nur von Flussauen durchzogen, eine Schule fürs Sehen? Es ist eine ebenso gern wie unscharf verwendete Bezeichnung, dieses »Leipziger Land«. Als Naturraum betrachtet, gehört es der oft synonym verwendeten Leipziger Tieflandsbucht an, einer eiszeitlichen Altmoränenlandschaft, die wiederum die südöstliche Ausbuchtung der Norddeutschen Tiefebene ins sächsische Hügelland darstellt und bis an die Mittelgebirgsschwelle heranreicht. Unter der Leipziger Tieflandsbucht werden das südöstliche SachsenAnhalt und das nordwestliche Sachsen verstanden, daher auch Halle-Leipziger oder thüringisch-sächsische Tieflandsbucht genannt, die im Osten an die Mulde mit dem Nordsächsischen Platten- und Hügelland grenzt.Das Leipziger Land ist freilich mehr als Naturraum. Im geschichtlichen Werden hat es seine heutige Gestalt gefunden, in Wechselwirkung von Mitte und Rändern. Letztere zeigen sich weit bewegter in ihrem Landschaftsrelief mit markanten Höhen wie dem Petersberg und Landsberg im Nordwesten, dem Collm und Rochlitzer Berg im Südosten. Oder die Ränder liegen an Saale, Weißer Elster, Pleiße und Mulde wie Merseburg, Weißenfels, Naumburg, Zeitz, Altenburg, Leisnig, Grimma, Wurzen, Eilenburg - immer sind es frühe Herrschaftspunkte gewesen. Auch wo sie unmerklich ins nordsächsische Flachland und Ostelbische auslaufen wie bei Torgau oder in die Lommatzscher Pflege bei Oschatz. Welche frühen Impulse Leipzig in naturräumlicher Lagegunst im Gewässerknoten aus seinen »Rändern« bezogen hat und wie es unter zielstrebiger Förderung der zu mitteldeutscher Landesherrschaft aufsteigenden Wettiner Vorort des Osterlandes und erster Handelsplatz (»geografisches Zentrum Mitteldeutschlands«) wurde, ist Thema des Buches
