While engaged in organizing his previous book, the author was only aware of the existence of one other seventeenth century tithable list for Northampton County, Virginia, and that was for the year 1666. Since that time the author has discovered two known lists (1667 and 1674) that had remained unpublished from the early Order Books and has found lists for 1662-1669, 1671 and 1674-1677, buried, largely unknown, in other early Order Books. The large volume of unpublished tithables material was enough for the author to consider making a useful transcription for researchers. Covering the early years of Northampton County, after Accomack County was formed, these tithables will be particularly of interest to those doing research on early inhabitants of the Virginia Colony. The tithables show the heads-of-families, and, in most cases, an every name listing of those black and white tithables in the household. Widows are shown (if head of household) thus establishing the recent death of a husband. Male children and slave tithables at twelve (or sixteen) help estimate date of birth or (probable) latest date of parent's marriage. Occupation or comments (such as, son of...) are often the only source of such valuable knowledge. Appearance or disappearance on the list may be a clue to migration patterns. These lists were sometimes badly torn, or blotted, or faded, or difficult to read, or poorly written, but, nevertheless, revealing. They are offered here as near as possible to the original orthography, and are an absolute must to those interested in early Virginia genealogy and history.

  • - Political Change in the Electorate
    von Mark Owens
    44,00 - 50,00 €

Texas is a solid red state. Or trending purple. Or soon to be blue. One thing is certain: as Texas looms ever larger in national politics, the makeup of its electorate increasingly matters. At a critical moment, as migration, immigration, and a maturing populace alter the state's political landscape, this book presents a deeply researched, data-rich look at who Texas voters are, what they want, and what it might mean for the future of the Republican and Democratic parties, the state, and the nation. Battle for the Heart of Texas goes beyond the pronouncements of leaders and pundits to reveal voters' nuanced opinions--about the 2020 Democratic primary candidates, state and national Republicans' responses to the Covid-19 pandemic, and issues such as immigration and gun policy. Working with an unprecedented cache of polling figures and qualitative data from surveys and focus groups--the product of a cooperative effort between the Dallas Morning News and The University of Texas at Tyler--Mark Owens, Kenneth A. Wink, and Kenneth Bryant Jr. provide an in-depth examination of what is reshaping voter preferences across Texas, including the partisan impact of the urbanization and nationalization of state politics. Their analyses pinpoint the influence of race, media exposure, ideological diversity within the parties, and geographic variation across the state, detailing how Texas politics has changed over time. Race may not have typically defined Texas politics, for instance, but the authors find that rhetoric on policies related to race are now shaping the electorate. The diversity in civic engagement among the Latino community also emerges from the data, compounded and complicated by the growth of the Latino population of voting age. The largest red state in the country, with the second-largest population, Texas is crucial to the way we think about political change in America--and this book amply and precisely equips us to understand the bellwether state's changing politics.

When the bloodiest labor dispute in U.S. history burst forth in 1913-14 in the coal fields of Southern Colorado, the miners knew whom to praise, and the owners knew whom to blame. Mary Harris Jones, known from New York to Colorado as Mother Jones, could incite a riot or calm a crowd with her amazing oratory gifts. She dedicated her life to helping miners organize to negotiate, even demand, better wages and working conditions."I hope there is no war in Trinidad," Mother Jones had said, referring to the entire Trinidad coal field expanse, "for it will cause suffering. But if the war has to be made that the boys in the mines may have their rights-let it come!" In the long run, did she help or harm the progress toward workers' rights? Were the deaths of mothers and children at Ludlow too great a price to pay?
