In 1871, Jacob and Isaac Kaufmann created a classic Pittsburgh institution. The business grew from a small store on the South Side to a mammoth clothing house downtown that outfitted the community. The removal of the original freestanding clock upset customers, so Kaufmann s added its iconic version in 1913. A redesign of the store s first floor attracted national attention in the 1930s. Established in 1705, the town of Groton is geographically located between the Thames and Mystic Rivers in the southeastern corner of Connecticut. The town is comprised of eight separate subdivision communities that are referred to as fire districts. Groton is also the home to a large naval submarine base, a small general aviation airport, and several major industrial facilities, including the Electric Boat Corporation and Pfizer, Inc. The Mystic fire district is recognized for its historical maritime museums and facilities and plays host to thousands of tourists each year. At the present time, Groton and Mystic are provided emergency services by 13 fire departments, three police departments, two ambulance associations, one paramedic response unit, and one central dispatch operation.

Harvard honor alumnus Dale Maple had a promising future, but his obsession with Nazi Germany led to his downfall. Classmates often accused him of pro-Nazi sentiments, and one campus organization even expelled him. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, only to be relegated to a unit of soldiers suspected of harboring German sympathies. He helped two German POWs escape imprisonment at Camp Hale and flee to Mexico. The fugitives ran out of gas seventeen miles from the border and managed to cross it on foot, only to be arrested and returned to American authorities. Convicted and sentenced to death for treason, Maple awaited his fate until President Franklin Roosevelt commuted his sentence to life imprisonment. Ultimately, he was released in 1950. Paul N. Herbert narrates the engrossing details of this riveting story.

Nestled in the Loess HIlls, Council Bluffs grew from a frontier settlement of wickiups and log cabins. The outpost boomed as a gateway to the West when gold was discovered in California in 1849. The Stanley Creek community, named for a gold prospector, began in the mid-1700s as one of the earliest settlements in Gaston County. Gold was mined in the area until the California Gold Rush. Among the prominent people visiting the area was Andre Michaux, botanist and adventurer, who discovered the tree he named Magnolia macrophylla. In 1860, the Wilmington, Charlotte & Rutherford Railroad came through the area on land owned by the Brevard family. Brevard s train depot was the primary rallying point for soldiers leaving for the Civil War and for sending supplies to troops. Around the end of the 1890s, Stanley Creek Cotton Mills was organized, beginning the textile era, which continued until 2000. Two Stanley men patented a dyeing machine, and Gaston County Dyeing Machine Company was born. Many of Stanley s men went to fight in the nation s wars, some losing their lives. Several athletes went on to major-league baseball, and a nationally recognized sculptor lived in Stanley."

From its earliest years, Mount Pleasant was known as the Athens of Iowa: a small town with a big story and a center of learning and culture. Even during the town s pioneer era, the citizens of Mount Pleasant championed education, establishing numerous schools and a college. Progressive ideals, including abolitionism and women s education, took root. As the home of Sen. James Harlan, an important ally of Abraham Lincoln, the city emerged as a bastion of support for the president. During the hardship of the Civil War, the community took up a second cause, becoming the location of the state mental health asylum. The drive for the improvement of life only increased, bolstered by the city s numerous schools, churches, and most importantly a spirit of community."

Two professors and a preacher invented Columbus radio. It began with science experiments in classrooms and a minister s desire to expand beyond his churchgoing audience. By 1922, government licenses had been issued for WEAO at Ohio State University and WJD at Denison University. At this same time, a Baptist minister went on the air for an hour each Sunday morning using a 10-watt transmitter licensed as WMAN. In this story of Columbus radio, the work of the professors and the preacher will evolve into radio with advertiser-supported programs of information and entertainment. Three important radio stations will serve a growing Columbus radio audience in different ways: WEAO becomes WOSU, a national pioneer in using radio for teaching; WMAN becomes WCOL and in the 1960s is number one in audience size; and CBS affiliate WBNS becomes the class act of Columbus radio, retaining the major share of local listeners for many decades. When Washington became the nation s capital in 1790, the surrounding area to the northwest the communities known today as Bethesda and Chevy Chase was devoted almost entirely to agriculture. Many farms were worked by slaves, and one of them, Josiah Henson, escaped to Canada and wrote his life story in 1849. Harriet Beecher Stowe based her novel Uncle Tom s Cabin on Henson s life, and the model for that famous dwelling still stands in Bethesda today. The transition of the region to modern suburbia started with a simple innovation: the trolley. Once lines were built in the 1890s, government employees could live outside the city and commute to work. But, the neighboring towns developed along different lines. Bethesda became a bustling commercial center, while Chevy Chase was created as a planned community featuring elegant homes and country clubs. Even though both border the capital, this book demonstrates how each community has a vibrant heritage and distinct identity of its own."

No house better reflects the personality and interests of its owner than Theodore Roosevelt s cherished Sagamore Hill. After Roosevelt returned to Oyster Bay following the death of both his beloved wife and mother, he and his second wife, Edith, made the house a home for their growing and rambunctious family. What began as the perfect getaway from unhealthy New York City summers in his grandfather s day became the Summer White House during Roosevelt s presidency. He hosted political guests like Henry Cabot Lodge and cultural luminaries like novelist Edith Wharton. Roosevelt spent his final years happily at Sagamore Hill, and after his death in 1919, the Theodore Roosevelt Association and the National Park Service preserved the house. The Starr Piano Company, based in Richmond, Indiana, quickly became one of the largest piano manufacturers in the United States during the 19th century. In 1915, the Starr Piano Company opened a recording division, Gennett Records, that led to a dynamic change in the music industry and American culture. Gennett embraced the vastly under-recorded genres of jazz, blues, and country music in the 1920s. They recorded artists who were groundbreakers and innovators in both popular and vernacular music, including Louis Armstrong, Charley Patton, Gene Autry, Hoagy Carmichael, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Uncle Dave Macon, and Jelly Roll Morton, often for the first time. The company, like many others, suffered a steep decline in the sale of their pianos and records due to the Great Depression, but the music recorded at Gennett continues to reach new generations and influence musicians as they discover it on reissues and streaming media services.

By 1885, Daniel Freeman owned a successful 25,000-acre ranch along the coastline in Southern California. That year, he sold parcels to J.S. Vosberg, and this became the site of the town of El Segundo. The Standard Oil Company of California purchased 840 acres of dunes in June 1911, and R.J. Hanna was hired to construct and manage the new refinery. His wife is credited with naming the town El Segundo ( the second ), as it was the location of the second Standard Oil plant. The city quickly expanded and was incorporated on January 18, 1917. From an early oil town to the Aerospace Capital of the World in the mid-1950s, El Segundo today includes a thriving residential community as well as several Fortune 500 corporations, an Air Force base, and the Chevron El Segundo Refinery."

The communities of northeast Tennessee are among the oldest settlements west of the Appalachian Mountains and the original 13 colonies. The cities of Bristol, Johnson City, and Kingsport and surrounding towns of Elizabethton, Erwin, Greeneville, Jonesborough, Mountain City, and Rogersville are home to some of the most remarkable historic houses in the country. The region is home to the oldest frame structure in Tennessee the Carter Mansion in Elizabethton and Pres. Andrew Johnson s residences in Greeneville, the Rocky Mount State Historic Site in Piney Flats, the Allandale Mansion in Kingsport, and the Roderick Butler Mansion in Mountain City. Northeast Tennessee features mountain log cabins, brick Federal-style residences, Georgian, Colonial, and Victorian mansions, urban apartment dwellings, row houses, and a number of other architectural styles.
