Jene Reise führte von Alexandrien nach Khartum und in den Sinai mit dem Ziel, die Monumente des pharaonischen Ägypten zeichnerisch zu dokumentieren. Max Weidenbach war mit 19 Jahren der jüngste Teilnehmer dieser bedeutenden wissenschaftlichen Expedition unter Leitung von Richard Lepsius, die Preußens König Friedrich Wilhelm IV. finanzierte. Sein Tagebuch wurde 2013 ganz unerwartet im South Australian Museum in Adelaide (wieder-)gefunden. Es ist eine neue und sehr ergiebige Quelle für die Geschichte der Expedition, aber auch für das Ägypten Mohamed Alis.
