Mit den »Deutschen Sagen« veröffentlichten die Brüder Grimm 1818 ihre zweite große Sammlung von Volkserzählungen neben den »Kinder- und Hausmärchen«. Die beiden Bände enthalten insgesamt 585 Geschichten, darunter die Erzählung vom Rattenfänger von Hameln und verschiedene Varianten des Frau Holle- und Heinzelmännchenmotivs, die oft fälschlicherweise den Hausmärchen zugerechnet werden. Dominieren im ersten Band märchenhaft-phantastische Texte, so finden sich im zweiten Band vor allem Sagen um historisch belegte Persönlichkeiten von der Germanenzeit bis ins Hochmittelalter.

Wilhelm Hauff veröffentlichte seine berühmten Märchen in den drei »Märchenalmanachen für Söhne und Töchter gebildeter Stände« der Jahre 1825, 1826 und 1827. Von den annähernd gleichzeitig entstandenen, düster-phantastischen und labyrinthischen Erzählungen seines Freundes E.T.A. Hoffmann unterscheiden sich Hauffs Kunstmärchen durch den optimistischeren Tonfall und die eindeutigere Erzähldramaturgie. Die regionale Anbindung an den Sagen- und Märchenbestand seiner südwestdeutschen Heimat erinnert hingegen an die Märchen- und Sagensammlungen der Brüder Grimm. Daneben enthält der Band auch noch mit »Der Reußenstein« das einzige Märchen von Wilhelm Hauff, das nicht im Rahmen der Almanache erschienen ist.
