Hieronymus Carl Friedrich von Münchhausen (1720-1797) machte zunächst Karriere in der russischen Armee, ehe er seinen Abschied nahm und den Rest seines Lebens auf dem Familiensitz im niedersächsischen Bodenwerder verbrachte. Ihre endgültige Form fanden die Erzählungen jedoch erst durch den Dichter Gottfried August Bürger, der Raspes Texte ins Deutsche übersetzte und ausschmückte. - Die vorliegende Ausgabe folgt der zweiten, von Bürger mit eigenen Texten umfangreich erweiterten Fassung aus dem Jahr 1788.

Es ging ihm darum, das Wunderbare in die Wirklichkeit des Alltags hineinzuholen, ohne dass eine Kluft zwischen beidem entsteht, wie es bei den Romantikern oft der Fall war. In Dänemark wie in Deutschland sah man in Andersens Erzählungen in erster Linie Märchen für Kinder. Das allerdings widersprach seinem eigenen Selbstverständnis, denn er selbst verstand sich als Autor für alle Altersklassen.
