John Kendrick Bangs (May 27, 1862 - January 21, 1922) was an American author, humorist, editor and satirist. He was born in Yonkers, New York. His father Francis N. Bangs was a lawyer in New York City, as was his brother, Francis S. Bangs. He went to Columbia College from 1880 to 1883 where he became editor of Columbia's literary magazine, Acta Columbia, and contributed short anonymous pieces to humor magazines. After graduation in 1883 with a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in Political Science, Bangs entered Columbia Law School but left in 1884 to become Associate Editor of Life under Edward S. Martin. Bangs contributed many articles and poems to the magazine between 1884 and 1888. During this period, Bangs published his first books.

Entre los temas, hay una amplia gama de cuentos sobre el amor, la muerte, la vida, la vida después de la muerte, el valor, la inocencia, la envidia, etc. Entre los géneros, hay cuentos de corte realista, surrealista, fantásticos, populares, etc. Algunos de estos cuentos se ajustan muy bien a la técnica narrativa del realismo mágico; otros, se basan en el folclor, en las creencias y supersticiones, y en los mitos y creencias religiosas. Hay cuentos alegóricos y sobre ficción histórica. Algunos de estos cuentos fueron tomados y adaptados de mi libro de cuentos para adultos. Debo mencionar aquí, que algunos de estos cuentos tienen su origen en algún sueño o revelación que tuve desde muy joven. Por ejemplo, "el niño que se convirtió en ángel," revela la fuerte emoción que sentí y la preocupación de tener que revelar a mi familia y, a otras personas, cuando me empezaron a salir las alas, y de cómo tenía que esconder o disimular con mis ropas los promontorios de las alas cuando me empezaron a crecer. Por otro lado, es notable el marcado realismo de alguna historia como en "La mamá gallina," producto de mi experiencia como campesino mientras vivía con mis padres; y el relato sobre, "La pobreza," que expresa la dureza de la vida del campo, especialmente en tiempos de sequía, de hambruna y de precariedad económica; pero también, debo decir que estos fueron los mejores momentos de mi vida mientras vivía con mis padres. Todas éstas fueron experiencias reales y vividas.
