This book describes the 1873 voyage of the British explorer Benjamin Leigh Smith, based on the diaries and photographs of Lieutenant Herbert C. Chermside, who joined the expedition of the seas around Svalbard. Chermside¿s photographs, long believed lost, have recently been uncovered in Sweden and are being curated there by the Grenna Museum. The three unpublished diaries of Herbert Chermside were lent to the Scott Polar Research Institute in 1939 by Mrs. Benjamin Leigh Smith. For the first time, Chermside¿s diaries are published in their entirety, with the original photographs shown alongside modern images of the same locations. This includes the first photographic record of the north coast of Svalbard, images that are today being used as comparative data for the study of climate change in the archipelago.The diaries have been fully transcribed and edited. Introductory chapters are included, written by specialists in the history of exploration, history of science, and the history of photography from Penn State University, the University of Gothenburg, and UiT, the Arctic University of Norway, as well as contributors from the UK and Germany.This volume is published in association with Grenna Museum, which will present Chermside¿s photographs in a 2022 exhibit on Leigh Smith and A.E. Nordenskiold.

European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) is the dominant tree species of the potential natural vegetationin Central Europe. In temperate forest ecosystems not affected by anthropogenic activities, nitrogenis a growth-limiting factor. Beech trees form mutualistic associations with ectomycorrhizal (EM)fungi, which have the ability to take up different inorganic and organic nitrogen-containingcompounds and to improve plant nitrogen-status. EM fungal communities and functions are thereforeof major interest for tree nutrition.In this work, the functional diversity of beech ectomycorrhizas with respect to nitrogen (N) andcarbon (C) availability has been investigated. The following hypotheses were tested:Mobilization of litter-derived nitrogen by EM fungi differs amongst fungal species in the firstphase of litter decomposition.Long-distance EM exploration types accumulate more litter-derived N than short distanceones, because of their higher accessibility to the litter.Differences in litter-derived N accumulation between EM fungal species decrease over timewith the increasing availability of litter-released N via the soil.Functional differences exist between EM fungal species with respect to nitrogen uptake andprocessing.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2018 im Fachbereich Geowissenschaften / Geographie - Phys. Geogr., Geomorphologie, Umweltforschung, Note: 1,7, Universität Hamburg, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Diese Arbeit steht im Kontext des Seminars: Ökozonen für Lehramtsstudierende, indem die Ökozonen der Erde nach Jürgen Schultz vorgestellt und anhand von exemplarisch regionalen Beispielen, sowie anschließend mit Hilfe einer Synthese erläutert werden. Der Begriff der Ökozone, der erstmals von Schultz (1988) eingeführt wurde, ist ein geowissenschaftlicher Begriff für Großräume der Erde, die anhand von mehreren ökologischen Merkmalen zonal eingeteilt werden.Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit den tropischen und subtropischen Trockengebieten, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf einer Synthese/Zusammenfassung der wichtigsten Gegebenheiten liegt. Um die Ökozone vorzustellen, erfolgt zunächst eine geographische Einordnung. Danach werden das Klima, sowie die reliefbildenen Prozesse vorgestellt. Darauf folgt eine knappe Einordnung der Böden. Die Böden bilden die Grundlage der Vegetation, auf die ich im Hauptteil mein Hauptaugenmerk setzen werde. In dem Kapitel soll die Flora genauer untersucht, und die spannende Frage geklärt werden, welche Strategien die Pflanzen in dieser extremen Ökozone anwenden, um zu überleben. Die Fauna hingegen, wird in der Ausarbeitung vernachlässigt. Am Ende dieser Arbeit wird im Fazit der anthropogene Eingriff, anhand von Vor- und Nachteilen diskutiert.
