An oral history of the Hurricane of 1938 in southeastern Connecticut. Read memories from over 65 people who lived through the storm. Illustrated with more than 60 photographs, many never published before. The hurricane hit on September 21, 1938 with no warning. Wind speeds of 120 miles per hour tore roofs off of houses and schools, uprooted huge trees, and collapsed barns. In New London, a large part of the city burned. After the storm subsided, a tidal surge raced up the Thames River flooding the city of Norwich in places to a depth of eleven feet. Bridges were washed away, dams were washed out and the city was left cut off from all outside communication. Along the shore in Connecticut and Rhode Island, seaside communities were washed away, never to be rebuilt. Within three hours all of southeastern New England was devastated.This book covers Norwich and its surrounding towns including: Preston, Griswold, Sprague, Canterbury, and Bozrah. Schaurige Gruselgeschichten erzählen von Menschen, die von Irrlichtern ins Moor geführt werden und dort jämmerlich versinken, um niemals wieder gesehen oder Jahre später als Moorleichen entdeckt zu werden. Auch Hexen und böse Geister sollen sich dort herumgetrieben haben. So hat der Mensch von jeher keine gute Beziehung zum Moor, da es für ihn Angst und Gefahr bedeutet. Jedoch hat er irgendwann erkannt, dass es auch von Nutzen für ihn sein kann und hat begonnen, Torf abzubauen. Die Moore bieten aber weitaus mehr Vorteile als auf den ersten Blick zu erkennen ist. Diese sollen in dieser Arbeit nach einer allgemeinen Darstellung der Moore erläutert werden, damit ersichtlich wird, welche Bedeutung sie für uns haben und warum es daher wert ist, die Moore zu schützen.

Geogr., Geomorphologie, Umweltforschung, Note: 1,3, Universität Osnabrück, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Nordeuropa ist besonders aufgrund seiner klimatischen Gegebenheiten reich an Mooren, wobei es neben Niedermooren wie Aapamooren auch viele Regenmoorgebiete beinhaltet. Diese gliedern sich in verschiedene Moortypen wie Kermi-, Palsa- oder Deckenmoore. Durch die intensive Nutzung durch den Menschen sind diese jedoch hochgradig gefährdet. Neben einer Vorstellung von Regenmooren wird in dieser Arbeit daher besonders auf die Gefährdung durch diese Nutzung und den nötigen Schutz eingegangen. Dazu wird zunächst das Regen-moor allgemein vorgestellt. Dabei werden Bedingungen, die zur Entstehung eines Regenmoores nötig sind, aufgezeigt sowie die Entstehung selbst erläutert. Außerdem werden der Aufbau und die Zusammensetzung beschrieben, woraufhin die Torfbildungsprozesse erklärt werden. An dieses Kapitel anschließend werden die Entstehung und Verbreitung von Regenmooren in Nordeuropa aufgezeigt und mit Kermimooren, Palsamooren und Deckenmooren drei Moortypen beschrieben. Darauf folgend werden die Nutzung und die Gefährdung von Mooren im Allgemeinen beschrieben sowie diesen der Schutz und die Renaturierung gegenübergestellt. Weiterhin werden im darauf folgenden Kapitel beispielhaft für Regenmoore Nordeuropas die Regenmoore Finnlands vorgestellt, wobei auf Bedingungen, Nutzung und Schutz eingegangen wird. Abschließend wird es ein Fazit geben.

Community-based wildlife conservation is promoted as a win-win solution for wildlife and people that protects biodiversity while improving the economic status of communities living among wildlife. This book, based on mixed-method anthropological research conducted in Samburu County, Kenya, demonstrates that, counter to simple narratives promising benefits, community-based wildlife conservancies (CBCs) are complex social institutions layered on pre-existing land use practices with differential impacts for members. Through in-depth research in three communities, Carolyn K. Lesorogol explains how diverse social actors understand and operate CBCs, how benefits and costs are distributed, the gendered nature of CBCs, and how they impact cooperation and conflict in communities. Lesorogol's analysis shows that economic benefits to members are generally very limited, and while many perceive improvements in security emanating from CBCs, there is also evidence that they heighten tensions over land use as well as human-wildlife conflict. Looking toward the future, the book includes recommendations for improving the effectiveness and accountability of CBCs. Conservation and Community in Kenya: Milking the Elephant offers critical insights into the implications of the CBC model for local pastoralist livelihoods, conservation, and social relations.
