This edited volume asks how the city, with its spatial and temporal configuration and its rhythms, produces and shapes violence, both in terms of the built environment, and through particular 'urban' social relations. The book builds on the insight that violence itself is a spatiotemporal practice with generative as well as destructive capacities, which create and transform urban space and time. By looking at the different ways in which the spatial and temporal configuration of cities produce and shape violence, the authors contextualise the dynamics of urban violence and show how violence affects everyday urban spatial practices and rhythms. Violence may reconfigure spatialities and temporalities in cities in the long term, changing the physical and social space as well the rhythms of a city. Memories and imaginations of violence are also inscribed in city-space, often in several temporal layers, and can lead to new violence through politicised practices of commemoration. In The spatiality and temporality of urban violence, authors from a range of disciplines apply this spatiotemporal perspective to nine diverse case studies, based on original material collected during ethnographic and archival research. The chapters cover cities in different world regions and historical phases, offering translocal and transregional perspectives. This fresh new perspective challenges assumed binaries of cities in the global North and South, and contests the alleged difference between violence in the past and in the present.

'In the growing literature on the far right and the environment, too few works centre the visual politics that are so integral to extremist appeals. Forchtner and his collaborators work to address this lacuna. Novel in its focus, global in its scope and rigorous in its analysis, Visualising far-right environments makes a necessary and compelling contribution to our understanding of the far right today.' >'A welcome, timely and original contribution. This set of diverse global case studies richly analyses the evergreen appeal of environmental and ecological claims - and their visual representations - to burgeoning far-right movements around the world. An essential read.' >From smiling faces in the nation's scenic landscape to the ridiculing of environmental activists and beyond, images play a crucial role in the far right's politics of nature. This book examines representations of natural environments and environmentalism by the far right around the world, scrutinising its implications for humans and nature. Visualising far-right environments approaches the visual as a key means of (re)producing identities and 'doing politics'. Images are not simply pervasive in our increasingly visual culture, but particularly persuasive in proposing worlds to viewers. In response, this book makes a first, concerted effort to put visuality centre-stage in the analysis of environmental communication by the far right. From the countryside to climate change, covering political parties and non-party actors from around the world, the volume demonstrates various ways in which the far right articulates natural environments and the rampant environmental crises of the twenty-first century. It provides a crucial insight into the multifaceted politics of nature.

This book is a rare collection of reflective and reflexive stories that reveal how seasoned academics, agents of grassroots social change, leaders and journalists transformed and shaped the development landscape in eastern and southern Africa. Whereas practical experiences are crucial assets and resources for shaping the academic environment and development practice landscape, most of the existing literature recommended as key learning materials in tertiary institutions is rarely in synch with the practical realities of development practice. The shared individual lived experiences from academic endeavours and fieldwork provide hands-on tools for students and emerging practitioners who might be involved in or are currently facilitating development work. The thrust of the book, therefore, is to demystify the day-to-day experiences of development practitioners while contributing to learning pathways or strategies for achieving viable solutions to the myriad of challenges, which grassroots communities face. The relevance of the book as a crucial resource for students pursuing development-oriented degree programmes in colleges and universities is obvious. Without any doubt, the compilation will be handy in the implementation of diverse development-oriented transformation agenda at academic, programming and policy levels.

The process of preparing bricks using mine waste involves mixing the waste materials, such as fly ash and bottom ash, with clay and other binding agents to create a homogeneous mixture. The mixture is then pressed into molds and allowed to dry and harden. The resulting bricks have several advantages, including lower costs, reduced environmental impact, and improved structural properties. The use of mine waste in brick making also helps to reduce the volume of waste produced by mining operations, making it a more sustainable practice. This process has the potential to make a significant contribution to sustainable construction and waste management practices. The use of mine waste in brick making has gained increasing attention in recent years due to the increasing demand for sustainable construction materials and the need for effective waste management practices. The mining industry generates a significant amount of waste materials, such as fly ash and bottom ash, which are often disposed of in landfills or ponds. However, these waste materials have the potential to be used as raw materials for brick making. The process of preparing bricks using mine waste involves several steps. The waste materials are first collected and transported to the brick manufacturing site. The waste materials are then mixed with clay and other binding agents to form a homogeneous mixture. The proportion of mine waste to other ingredients in the mixture may vary depending on the quality and quantity of the waste material.Once the mixture is prepared, it is then pressed into molds using hydraulic or manual presses. The molded mixture is then allowed to dry and harden, either through air drying or by using a kiln. The resulting bricks are then ready for use in construction.

Experience Life Among the World's Northernmost PeopleThroughout history, few cultures have seemed more mysterious than the native hunter-gatherer societies of the far north. These nomadic people often thrived in unforgiving conditions on frozen, treeless terrain above the Arctic Circle, where mere survival was an everyday challenge. Known among themselves simply as the People, the Inuit men and women that Europeans called "Eskimos" existed for centuries in harmony with the unforgiving natural world around them; when times were good they prospered on natural bounties, and when times were bad they overcame the bleakest of conditions just to make it through. Prior to their contact with many other Europeans in the early twentieth century, Danish explorer Peter Freuchen befriended and lived among the Inuit in Greenland. He studied their language and ways of life firsthand, eventually marrying and having children with an Inuit woman there. Since they were a people with no written language, Freuchen's captivating observations offered the rest of the world some of the earliest eyewitness accounts of "Eskimo" lifestyle. Before his account was published, Western writers often romanticized the life of the Inuit; where others pictured a near-mythological life of hardship in an inhospitable landscape of icy bleakness, Freuchen revealed the tapestry of a rich and storied culture set in a world of raw beauty. Examining pre-westernized Inuit societies in Greenland, northern Canada, and Alaska, Freuchen's Book of the Eskimos is a rare and uniquely personal portrait of the indigenous people of the Arctic. Brimming with fascinating information, color, humor, and warmth, this classic chronicle of the everyday lives and customs of these resourceful communities and families offers a completely engaging immersion into a foreign land and an excellent introduction to the tenacious people living at the top of the world. This book is also available from Echo Point Books as a hardcover (ISBN 1648372708).

From the author of the modern business classic The Smartest Guys in the Room comes a damning indictment of late-stage capitalism-and the leaders that were brutally unprepared for a global pandemic. In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic made it painfully clear that governments across the world could not adequately protect their citizens. Millions of people suffered and died in just two years, while administrations around the globe blundered; prize-winning economists overlooked devastating trade-offs from the collapse of trade; and elites escaped to isolated retreats, unaffected by - and worse, even profiting from - the worst healthcare crisis to hit humanity in decades. In this page-turning economic, political and financial history, veteran journalists Bethany McClean and Joseph Nocera analyse the American response to the pandemic as a case study, to offer fresh and provocative answers. With laser-sharp reporting and deep sourcing, they investigate what really happened when governments ran out of PPE due to snarled supply chains; and the shock to the financial system when the world's biggest economies stumbled. They zero in on the effectiveness of wildly polarised approaches across states, and they trace why thousands died in hollowed-out hospital systems and nursing homes run by private equity firms, all in the name of "maximising shareholder value".The Big Fail is an expansive, gripping narrative account on what the pandemic did to one economy, and how it forced us to question the fundamental principles of our society

KNOWLEDGE OF BASIC SURVIVAL PRINCIPLESKnowledge is the basis for almost every successful survival skill. You can get it from reading books, listening to the advice and stories of others, and watching the actions of others. However, the most important way to gain true knowledge of survival principles is trial and error with your own two hands. No method of learning takes the place of hands-on, personal experience. Your options in a survival scenario will ultimately depend on your understanding of basic survival principles that surround shelter, water, fire, and food.INNOVATIVE THINKINGI've often said that innovation is the most important survival skill. Innovation can be defined in survival as creatively using available resources to execute a plan formulated using pre-existing survival knowledge. At the end of the day, the application of survival principles is only limited by your ability to creatively use them.EXPLOITING AVAILABLE RESOURCESAvailable resources are anything natural or manmade, from leaves and sticks to trash bottles and windshield wipers. Everything is potentially a survival resource that you can exploit, with knowledge and creativity, to get what you need. In this book, we explore hundreds of everyday items that can be modified, repurposed, reused, reshaped, rebuilt, or recycled to meet some kind of basic human survival need.THREE THOUSAND FAILURESSome of the hacks featured in this book are tips and tricks I've absorbed throughout my lifelong study of survival; I learned them from other people and from watching others in the field. I've picked up all sorts of hacks from friends, family, students, and other survival enthusiasts. I'm always on the lookout for a fun, new, and creative survival hack. However, many of the following 200-plus survival hacks are also the result of more than 3,000 failed attempts. Some, such as the Make a Fire Pipe hack in Chapter 3, took more than 20 tries to get right. If I had quit working on a hack idea at the first failed attempt, this book would be about five pages long. The 200-plus hacks listed in the following pages are proven to work. I've successfully practiced them all. Each of them is an actionable lesson in survival; you can go into your backyard and practice them right now. Many can be executed in the comfort of your.home or garage, and certainly you can use them on your next camping trip.THE MORE YOU HACKAs you study, practice, and use these 200-plus hacks from everydayobjects, you're bound to learn more about survival principles and howto creatively meet basic survival needs. This knowledge will lead tonew "hack" ideas that I want to hear about! E-mail your hack ideas tocreek@creekstewart.com. Who knows, your hack could make it intothe next volume of Survival Hacks.
