Walter Eberhard und sein Freund Michael Maier eint seit 30 Jahren die Laufleidenschaft als Ausgleich zum Alltag. Ihr Interesse verlagerte sich immer mehr auf Natur- und Geschichtsthemen. Der sportliche Aspekt rückte so zunehmend in den Hintergrund. Magisch angezogen fühlten sie sich beispielsweise von den historischen Grenzsteinen der ehemaligen Landesgrenze zwischen Baden und Württemberg, die sich auch durch ihren Heimatort Villingen-Schwenningen zog.Das weckte ihre Neugierde auf das Grüne Band - den ehemaligen Grenzstreifen zwischen BRD und DDR. Der wohl geschichtsträchtigste Pfad Deutschlands zieht sich 1393 km von der Ostsee bis ans Erzgebirge. Entlang der Strecke liegen nicht nur zahlreiche Grenz- und Industriemuseen, sondern viele Spuren des Faschismus sind noch heute sichtbar. Gleichzeitig imponiert das Grüne Band als wild gewachsener Rückzugs- und Wanderkorridor für bedrohte Tier- und P anzenarten. Es besteht aus 150 Naturschutzgebieten, die zusammen den größten Biotopverbund Deutschlands bilden.Deshalb schließen sich die beiden Freunde den Forderungen des BUND an:. Das Grüne Band ist nicht nur gesamthaft als nationales Naturmonument unter Schutz zu stellen.. Es verdient auch eine Aufnahme in das UNESCO-Weltnatur- und Kulturerbe.
