This thesis describes in-depth theoretical efforts to understand the reaction mechanism of graphite and lithium metal as anodes for next-generation rechargeable batteries. The first part deals with Na intercalation chemistry in graphite, whose understanding is crucial for utilizing graphite as an anode for Na-ion batteries. The author demonstrates that Na ion intercalation in graphite is thermodynamically unstable because of the unfavorable Na-graphene interaction. To address this issue, the inclusion of screening moieties, such as solvents, is suggested and proven to enable reversible Na-solvent cointercalation in graphite. Furthermore, the author provides the correlation between the intercalation behavior and the properties of solvents, suggesting a general strategy to tailor the electrochemical intercalation chemistry. The second part addresses the Li dendrite growth issue, which is preventing practical application of Li metal anodes. A continuum mechanics study considering various experimental conditions reveals the origins of irregular growth of Li metal. The findings provide crucial clues for developing effective counter strategies to control the Li metal growth, which will advance the application of high-energy-density Li metal anodes.

Erreicht wurde dies durch Urteilsanalysen von acht Verfahren zu 25 Angeklagten vor internationalen Strafgerichtshöfen. Über alle untersuchten Genozide hinweg stechen die Faktoren Bedrohungsszenarien, Autorisierung und Dehumanisierung hervor. Es ist eine Eigenschaft des Genozids, dass sich die gesellschaftlich dominante Bevölkerungsgruppe - meist die Mehrheit - von der genozidalen Opfergruppe bedroht fühlt. Der Genozid wird in diesem Zusammenhang als "Bedrohungsabwehr" eingesetzt. Sowohl die Bedrohungsassoziation als auch der Bedrohungsgrad werden verstärkt, indem auf die Andersartigkeit der Opfergruppe verwiesen wird, wonach sie von Natur aus nicht anders könne, als die dominierende Bevölkerungsgruppe anzugreifen.

The field of quantum information science has seen tremendous progress over the last several years, with advances in both hardware development and novel algorithms. This Special Issue has endeavored to capture some of the technical advances in this rapidly changing field.

This Special Issue, "Innovative Nanomaterial Properties and Applications in Chemistry, Physics, Medicine, or Environment", focused on (i) the synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles, nanotubes, nanowires, or nanofibers; (ii) nanostructures (graphene, zeolites, membrane, etc.), coatings, and thin films; (iii) the correlation between the chemical composition, morphology, surface, and magnetic properties of nanostructured materials; (iv) the thermal behaviour of ceramic pigments with applications in glazes; (v) nanomaterials for photocatalysis and electrocatalysis; (vi) nanomaterials for water purification; (vii) nanomaterials for the adsorption of organic and inorganic pollutants; and (viii) nanomaterials for biosensing and biomedical applications. This Special Issue includes 12 original research papers and highlights the development of synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials and nanostructures of different natures with various applications in chemistry, physics, medicine, biology, and the environment.

Since the mid-1970s, gay rodeos have provided space to both embrace and challenge the idealized masculinity associated with the iconic cowboy of the US West. Slapping Leather traces the history and growth of gay rodeo over the decades, demonstrating how queer cowfolx have fought to build a community where LGBTQ+ people can escape discrimination in both mainstream rodeos and broader society. Yet not all LGBTQ+ groups have found full acceptance in gay rodeo. Originally formed by gay men for gay men, the rodeo has at times perpetuated historically problematic ideas about the US West, the iconic cowboy, and the meaning of masculinity. Despite the gay rodeo's credo of acceptance, its history reveals complicated relationships with straight rodeo, gender stereotypes, and women competitors.
