BackgroundThe Squamish Streamkeepers, whose reason for existence is to help wild salmon populations in the Squamish River watershed, began to wonder if they should expand their work to include Pacific herring. Herring used to spawn in great numbers in the estuary at the mouth of the Squamish River and is a major source of food for young salmon migrating out of the river and into Howe sound. So in 2006, the streamkeepers began formulating a plan to help bring herring populations back to their former levels of abundance.The DiscoveryIn 2008, while trying to encourage herring to spawn on hemlock boughs near the Squamish Terminals, the streamkeepers found dead herring eggs on the pilings of the east dock. They decided to investigate and discovered millions of dead eggs on many of the pilings. They decided to try and wrap the pilings with non-toxic material to protect the eggs from the creosote on the pilings. Initially the plan worked. But the next year, many of the eggs on the wraps died. Time and again the streamkeeper project was thwarted by wind, extreme air temperatures, oil spills, and disease. Even a massive fire at the Squamish terminals that wiped out all of their work did not stop them from trying to help the herring in Howe Sound and False Creek.The Bigger PictureSince contact with European settlers in the late 1800's, herring populations on Canada's west coast have had to survive over zealous fishing pressure, spawning habitat degradation, and now diseases amplified from open net pen fish farms.In spite of the importance to the marine ecosystem, herring and other small pelagic fishes are considered trash fish in some circles because they are not large enough for human consumption. So, they are often caught, ground up and turned into other products like fish meal or fish oil products. The trouble with our use of these fish is they are essential to the functioning of the marine food web. Herring are the main food source for so many species.When I began to make this film over ten years ago, I had to stop production many times because it was difficult getting footage of herring at the different stages of its lifecycle. And as often happened, I would miss getting the crucial shots around spawning times because there might only be 3 to 5 days a year when the spawn happens. Finally, after many years, I got herring footage at the egg, larva, juvenile and adult stages. Fledermäuse sind die zweitgrößte Gruppe von Säugetieren, deren Bedeutung vor allem in ihren ökologischen Funktionen innerhalb des Ökosystems liegt. Für den Pico San Juan gibt es keine Studien, die die Artenzusammensetzung in verschiedenen Höhenlagen vergleichen. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit war es, die Fledermausarten auf einer regionalen Höhenskala zu identifizieren und zu vergleichen. Das Monitoring wurde in drei aufeinanderfolgenden Nächten im September 2018 in drei Höhenlagen durchgeführt: 600 m, 800 m und 1100 m, die sich in der Gemeinde Cumanayagua, Provinz Cienfuegos, im südlichen Zentrum Kubas befinden. Für die Identifizierung der Fledermausarten wurden drei 9-Meter-Nebelnetze verwendet. Es wurden elf Fledermausarten identifiziert, die zu vier Familien und 10 Gattungen gehören und 42,3 % der Chiropterofauna Kubas und 57,9 % der Chiropterofauna Guamuhayas ausmachen. Die am stärksten vertretene trophische Gilde waren die Insektenfresser (6 Arten). Es wurde gezeigt, dass der Artenreichtum durch den Höhengradienten beeinflusst wird, der für die Heterogenität der Landschaft im Pico San Juan verantwortlich ist.

Die vorliegende Arbeit wurde mit dem Ziel durchgeführt, das Wissen über Fledermäuse zu erweitern und ihre Bedeutung für das Ökosystem durch die ökosystemare Rolle, die sie spielen, hervorzuheben sowie bekannt zu machen, dass die Forschungsarbeit in Peru zunimmt, um den Behörden mitzuteilen, dass zukünftige Pläne viele weitere Aspekte berücksichtigen müssen, um die Auswirkungen von Fledermäusen zu vermeiden. Diese Studie hätte ohne die Unterstützung des Forschungszentrums VERTEBRATE, das zur Fachhochschule für Biologie der Nationalen Universität San Antonio Abad del Cusco gehört, nicht durchgeführt werden können. Es ist anzumerken, dass es im Hochland von Peru zwei Jahreszeiten gibt, die sich durch sehr unterschiedliche klimatische Bedingungen auszeichnen, so dass auch die ökologischen Bedingungen variieren, was es uns ermöglichte, die Unterschiede in der Vielfalt der Chiroptera an diesem Ort zu bewerten.

Os morcegos são o segundo grupo de mamíferos mais diverso, cuja importância reside principalmente nas suas funções ecológicas no ecossistema. No Pico San Juan, não existem estudos que comparem a composição de espécies em diferentes faixas altitudinais. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi identificar e comparar as assembleias de morcegos distribuídas a uma escala altitudinal regional. O monitoramento foi realizado por três noites consecutivas durante o mês de setembro de 2018 em três faixas altitudinais: 600 m, 800 m, 1100 m, localizadas no município de Cumanayagua, província de Cienfuegos, centro-sul de Cuba. Foram utilizadas três redes de neblina de 9 metros para a identificação das espécies de morcegos. Foram identificadas 11 espécies de morcegos, pertencentes a quatro famílias e 10 géneros, representando 42,3% da quiropterofauna de Cuba e 57,9% de Guamuhaya. O grupo trófico mais bem representado foi o dos insectívoros (6 espécies). Foi demonstrado que a riqueza de espécies é influenciada pelo gradiente altitudinal, que é responsável pela heterogeneidade da paisagem no Pico San Juan.

O presente trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de aumentar o conhecimento sobre os morcegos e destacar a sua importância para o ecossistema, através dos papéis ecossistémicos que desempenham, bem como dar a conhecer que o trabalho de investigação no Peru está a aumentar, a fim de dar a conhecer às autoridades que os planos futuros devem considerar muitos mais aspectos para evitar o impacto dos morcegos. Este estudo não poderia ter sido realizado sem o apoio do centro de investigação VERTEBRATE, que pertence à Escola Profissional de Biologia da Universidade Nacional de San Antonio Abad del Cusco. Deve-se notar que nas terras altas do Peru há duas estações, que são caracterizadas por condições climáticas muito diferentes e, portanto, as condições ecológicas também variam, e graças a isso pudemos avaliar a diferença na diversidade de quirópteros nesta localidade.
