Every year in Tunisia, livestock farmers face a shortage of feed for their animals, while the number of head continues to rise. Concentrated supplements are expensive and difficult to obtain. By contrast, multi-nutritional blocks, made from local agro-industrial rejects, are much cheaper. In addition, compensatory growth (nutritional restriction followed by a period of re-feeding) is a classic strategy for keeping farming costs down.Could feed blocks replace manufactured concentrate supplements without compromising lamb performance? What effect would they have on carcass and meat quality? Our experiment aims to verify the effect of administering multi-nutritional blocks based on olive pomace (32% oilcake) and compensatory growth on the lambs' zootechnical performance (weight gain, average daily gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio) and on the quality of the carcass and meat they produce.

La présente étude a été conduite dans le but de dénombrer les populations de primates et d'inventorier les plantes et organes dont ils se nourrissent dans la forêt sacrée de Kikélé dans la commune de Bassila au Nord-Bénin. Les primates diurnes et nocturnes ont été dénombrés par la méthode de comptage complet. Des enquêtes auprès de 60 personnes ressources et observations de terrain durant 90 jours ont été faites pour inventorier les plantes et organes consommés par les primates. La forêt sacrée de Kikélé abrite trois espèces de primates dont une espèce nocturne Galago senegalensis (16 individus) et deux espèces diurnes dont Cercopithecus mona (2 individus) et Colobus vellerosus (28 individus). 35 espèces végétales ont été inventoriées comme ressources alimentaires pour C. vellerosus, 39 espèces végétales pour C. mona et 12 espèces végétales pour G. senegalensis. G. senegalensis se nourrit exclusivement de fruits mûrs, tandis que les deux autres espèces se nourrissent principalement de fruits et de feuilles. Les leguminosae et les mésophanérophytes étaient en les plus représentées dans le régime alimentaire.

This book addresses a global issue of increasing high quality food from ruminant animals while reducing their impacts on the environment. However, one of the main constraints to livestock development and the underlying cause of the low productivity in many developing countries is inadequate nutrition associated with inefficient utilization of forages and fibrous feed resources. In many countries, fibrous feed makes up the bulk of available feed resource base, which is characterized by scarcity and fluctuating supply in the quantity and quality of feed resources, nutrient imbalance as seen in many native pastures, grasslands and crop residues-based feeding systems with limited use of commercial concentrate feeds such as soybean, cottonseed and groundnut meals, etc. Furthermore, the production of methane, an important greenhouse gas (GHG), from ruminants fed highly fibrous diets such as straws and stover is higher than those animals fed better quality forages or concentrate diets. Recent research shows that supplementing livestock diets with exogenous fibre degrading enzymes can improve feed utilization by enhancing intake, fibre degradation in the rumen and overall digestibility of fibrous feeds which in turn leads to improved animal performance, farmers¿ income, and a reduction in GHG emissions. The book editors would like to acknowledge the Joint FAO/IAEA Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture for funding part of the studies that make up some of these chapters and were part of the final reports of a coordinated research project financed by IAEA.

In this book's chapters, a reader's experiences will stretch from learning about baleen whale laryngeal anatomy associated with their different voices to learning about the vast ocean areas over which their voices can be heard and the emerging complexities of their culturally defined societies. These are accompanied by chapters on the fundamental ethological contexts of socializing, migrating, and foraging. Two common themes permeate the book.
