Motherhood and Hollywood is Patricia Heaton's humorous and poignant collection of essays on life, love, marriage, child-rearing, show business, having parents, being a parent, spousal rage, surviving fame, success, and the shame of underarm flab. She is warm, witty, and refreshingly irreverent.Heaton grew up in suburban Cleveland, one of five children of devout Roman Catholic parents. Her father was a noted sportswriter for The Plain Dealer; her mother died suddenly and unexpectedly when Heaton was twelve. Love, fast food, and an unflagging sense of humor held the clan together and propelled Patricia on a showbiz career that began with hilariously nightmarish struggles in New York, eventually leading to a triumphant move to Los Angeles. In Motherhood and Hollywood, Patricia Heaton pours out her heart and minces no words. She's taking all prisoners for cookies and a glass of Jack Daniel's and diet ginger ale. Laughter ensues.

Become the parent you want to beImagine knowing exactly how you can help your child feel deeply relaxed, so that they are cooperative and gentle and sleep peacefully. In this compassionate book for parents of 1-8 year olds, you'll understand the attachment-based, trauma-informed, reasons why children:-have tantrums;-hit other children;-get playful before bed;-cry over small things;-suck their thumb; and-do things that we ask them not to do and laugh. This culture often sees children as 'flawed', 'bad,' or 'inferior'. As an antidote, I'm Here and I'm Listening can help you understand and work with your child's innate wisdom. Listening to their big feelings when they cry and rage, and playing with them in particular ways helps them to heal from trauma and everyday stress. They become calmer and more compassionate, as well as clear-thinking, competent, and confident. In I'm Here and I'm Listening, Dr. Rose describes elements of the Aware Parenting approach, created by Aletha Solter, PhD. Learn how you can also apply this paradigm to your own reparenting, to value your own needs and feelings, and create a more loving inner dialogue. Drop guilt and self-judgment and be compassionate with yourself, especially if you revert to cultural conditioning of rewards or threats, or if you get reactive because painful feelings from your own childhood emerge. In their behaviour and feelings, children are asking us: Will you stay here with me? Will you listen to me? Will you help me know I'm safe to feel my feelings? Do you love me, whatever I feel? This book will help your child know that the answer to each of these questions is a resounding yes!"I am delighted to recommend I'm Here and I'm Listening, which is packed with helpful information for navigating through the early childhood years without the use of punishments or rewards. Parents who are not yet familiar with Aware Parenting will learn compassionate and effective skills for responding to children's uncooperative or aggressive behavior and for resolving everyday conflicts about bedtime, sibling relationships, eating, and screen use. For those who are already familiar with Aware Parenting, this book will deepen their understanding of the approach. Throughout the book, Marion Rose invites her readers to explore the root causes of children's behavior and to question common cultural assumptions. She also encourages parents to delve into their own childhood memories to better understand their reactions to their children's behavior. Perhaps most importantly, this book will help parents feel good about themselves while becoming the kind of parents they want to be." - Aletha Solter, PhD, founder of Aware Parenting"This book offers a clear description of how we can remember who children are by nature, why they behave in ways that are not enjoyable for parents, and how we can support them with each challenge in the most loving and effective way." - Joss Goulden, Level 2 Aware Parenting instructor

REVISED AND UPDATED 2011 EDITIONThe essence of adolescence hasn't changed since this book was first published in 2005. Their brains haven't skipped a growth spurt; their search for identity hasn't been called off or even detoured; they haven't forgotten how to speak with the ease of attitude. And yet, fingers fly across keys to a host of new adolescent domains--from texting to iTunes, from chats to anything-on-demand. This update traverses new adolescent territory, both charted and uncharted, to bring parents up-to-speed on what to expect and how to deal.Every teenager keeps secrets, and if you're like most parents, you worry about what your kids don't tell you--especially when they prefer text messages and social networking sites to face-to-face conversation. Now this popular guide has been revised and updated to address the challenges parents face with a wired and Web-savvy generation. Jenifer Lippincott and Robin Deutsch offer a deceptively simple plan for talking to your kids that's based on a simple set of rules: Teens need to stay safe, show respect, and keep in touch--online, and in real life.

  • - Medicine, Anxiety, Rhetoric, and Genre
    von Dara Rossman Regaignon
    93,00 €

When did mothers start worrying so much? Why do they keep worrying so? Writing Maternity: Medicine, Anxiety, Rhetoric, and Genre answers these questions by identifying the nineteenth-century rhetorical origins of maternal anxiety, inviting readers to think about worrying not as something individual mothers do but as an affect that since Victorian times has defined middle-class motherhood itself. In this book, Dara Rossman Regaignon offers the first comprehensive study of child-rearing advice literature from early-nineteenth-century Britain and argues that the historical emergence of that genre catalyzed a durable shift in which maternal care was identified as maternal anxiety. Tracing the rhetorical circulation of this affect from advice literature through the memoirs of Mary Martha Sherwood (1775-1851) and Catharine Tait (1819-1878), as well as fiction by Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell, the Brontës, and Charlotte Mary Yonge, Regaignon gives maternal anxiety a literary-rhetorical history. She does this by bringing concepts such as uptake and genre ecology into literary studies from rhetorical genre theory, making a case for a mobile and culturally influential notion of genre. Examining specific case studies on child death, paid childcare, and infant doping, among others, Regaignon argues that the ideology of nurturing motherhood was predicated upon the rhetorical cultivation of maternal anxiety--which has had significant consequences for the experience of motherhood and maternal feeling.
