Affublée parfois de termes peu flatteurs comme « supplément d¿âme » ou « parent pauvre », l¿éducation musicale à l¿école peut aussi être déclarée, en tant que discipline artistique, comme une « priorité nationale », en tous cas devoir se faire entendre dans toutes les écoles avec « la rentrée en musique » ou les « plans chorales », par exemple.Même si parfois, à l¿école primaire, l¿éducation musicale peine à trouver sa place dans certaines pratiques, elle a toujours gardé sa place dans les programmes, dont les contenus ont évolué comme pour toutes les autres disciplines. La musique peut être modestement enseignée par des enseignants qui déclarent faire ce qüils peuvent. La musique à l¿école peut aussi faire l¿objet de projets ambitieux (rencontre chorales, orchestre à l¿école, écoute quotidienne de toutes les classes d¿une école, etc.). Mais alors, quelles sont les valeurs que défendent les professeurs des écoles qui prennent du temps sur un emploi du temps chargé pour faire vivre la musique dans leur classe ? Cet ouvrage a pour objectif de donner à comprendre les valeurs qui mobilisent les enseignants à faire pratiquer la musique à leurs élèves, à partir de récits d¿expérience, parmi les 90 entretiens effectués au cours de ces 20 dernières années.
