An essay by Edward Lucie-Smith explores the dynamic art of Titian, exhibited in a major collection of his key paintings at the National Gallery London and other studies of leading figures in the transcendent era of the High Italian Renaissance in painting, drawing, sculpture and architecture of the 15th and 16th centuies. 'The Titian show at the National Gallery here in London has just opened to the public again. It was available for just three days before the big lockdown. Now it is with us once more, though on rather different terms from what was the case previously. You have to book a time. You have to wearing a mask. You have to keep a distance between yourself and other visitors booked in for the same slot. Is it worth the hassle? Yes, of course it is. Titian is one of the greatest figures in the history of Western art.' ELS

More than 30 years after the collapse of the German Democratic Republic, its cinema continues to attract scholarly attention. Documenting Socialism moves beyond the traditionally analyzed "feature film production" and places East Germany's documentary cinema at the center of history behind the Iron Curtain. Between questions of gender, race and sexuality and the complexities of diversity under the political and cultural environments of socialism, the specialist contributions in this volume cohere into an introductory milestone on documentary film production in the GDR.

During the Cold War, scientific discoveries were adapted and critiqued in many different forms of media across a divided Europe. Now, more than 30 years since the end of the Cold War, Science on Screen and Paper explores the intersections between scientific research and media by drawing from media history, film studies, and the history of science. From public relations material to educational and science films, from children's magazines to television broadcasts, the contributions in this collected volume seek to embrace medial differences and focus on intersectional themes and strategies for the representation of science.

Winner of the Klaus Heyne Award for Research in German Romanticism*Includes 47 imagesIn the nineteenth century, a cluster of German Romantic artists and naturalists including Johann Moritz Rugendas, Carl Alexander Simon, Otto Grashof, Theodor Ohlsen, Eduard Poeppig, and Rudolph Amandus Philippi, embarked on different journeys to Chile, a newly liberated country characterized by untamed landscapes, overwhelming nature, and an important diversity of people. This study is the first scholarly attempt to critically explore the unfolding of German Romanticism in Chile, delving into the motivations and experiences of these six explorers as they ventured across the sea, the Andes, the secluded jungles of southern Chile, and the Atacama Desert to portray the country's people, landscapes, and nature. This book challenges conventional interpretations of German Romanticism as a purely emotional and spiritualized crusade, arguing for a more nuanced understanding that takes into account the complexities of this cultural movement in a foreign setting, offering a critical analysis of its impact on the depiction of Chile within the broader program of Western modernity imposed outside of Europe. The central argument of this book is that the activities and depictions of these artists and naturalists, far from being mere artistic pursuits, expressed a desire for expansion in multiple dimensions-spatial, economic, cultural, and scientific-ultimately driven by a mighty colonial impulse. Thus, in their quest for exploration and artistic inspiration, they projected their anxieties, obsessions, and hegemonic ideas about race, class, Europeanness, indigeneity, territorial appropriation, and nature, reflecting their own cultural and personal agendas.By examining the impact of German Romanticism on the depiction of Chile and the convergence of scientism, Romanticism, and colonialism, this publication seeks to shed new light on the intricate cultural exchanges between Germany and Latin America during a century consumed by ideas of progress, evolution, and the systematic categorization of nature, offering a new perspective on this subject matter.Cultural Exchanges and Colonial Legacies in Latin America: German Romanticism in Chile, 1800-1899 serves as a first introduction to this unfathomed topic, standing as a significant and essential reference for individuals engaged in academic research, students, and general readers intrigued by art history, visual culture, colonialism, Romanticism, and Latin American studies. This book is in the Cambria Latin American Literatures and Cultures Series headed by Román de la Campa, the Edwin B. and Lenore R. Williams Professor Emeritus of Romance Languages at the University of Pennsylvania.

The first amateur motion picture camera was massively produced in 1923, shortly after the introduction of 9,5 mm film by the Pathé Frères in France 101 years ago, in December 1922, and of 16 mm film by the Eastman Kodak Company in America a month later. The present collection depicts 101 movie cameras manufactured between the 1920s and the 1980s, most using 8 mm perforated celluloid film. A full-page 'portrait' of each model is accompanied by an exposé of its main technical specifications on the facing page. The guided tour leafs through a range of makes and companies from an era when novelty, aesthetics, industrial design, and competition for the commercial home market propelled the creation of sculptures out of metal and glass for the wide use by individuals and families who aspired to preserve their visual impressions in motion. The book is a useful source for hobbyists and collectors.

"Only Idle Chatter" contains over 65 texts ranging from historical insights to production details, from personal reflections to high-spirited entertainments. They are reprinted substantially as they appeared in Gilbert & Sullivan Austin newsletters and programs from 2010 to 2020 and were designed to create interest in playgoers new to Gilbert & Sullivan as well as to engage seasoned Savoyards. President Emerita Libby Weed provides a foreword, and Ralph MacPhail, Jr., adds an introduction with acknowledgments, notes on the texts for which there was no room in their original, ephemeral publication, and an extensive list of references and suggestions for further reading. "Everyone will learn something new from the apparently ephemeral pieces in this book. They are full of insight and understanding and, above all, joy." --Andrew Crowther, author of "Gilbert of Gilbert & Sullivan" and "Contradiction Contradicted"; Secretary, The W. S. Gilbert Society "An enjoyable read, 'Only Idle Chatter' is an interesting and above all affectionate insight into the art of effectively, and with honesty, producing a Gilbert script. From practical backstage traffic control issues to the touchier matters of navigating outdated or obscure references, MacPhail lets us in on the research and thought required for understanding a Savoy opera, without getting bogged down in academic detail or minutiae." --Dr. Jeffrey Jones-Ragona, Music Director and Conductor, Gilbert & Sullivan Austin "Ralph MacPhail, Jr., combines deep knowledge about Gilbert and Sullivan and their works with an erudite yet accessible writing style. His descriptions and analyses enhance the enjoyment that G&S provides to even the casual Savoyard." --Diane Radin, President, Gilbert & Sullivan Austin "In 'Only Idle Chatter,' Ralph MacPhail, Jr., brings unassuming expertise and a good-natured humor to his treatment of 10 Savoy operas and seven G&S-related rarities." --Gayden Wren, author of "A Most Ingenious Paradox: The Art of Gilbert & Sullivan"

  • von Stanley Schtinter

Stanley Schtinter's debut collection, Last Movies, is an alternative account of the first century of cinema according to the films watched by a constellation of its most notable stars shortly before (or at the time of) their deaths. An extensive and exhaustive research project-a holy book of celluloid spiritualism and old canards-Schtinter questions and reconfigures common knowledge to recast the historic column inches of cinema's mythological hearsay into a thousand-yard stare. Via a series of interlinked vignettes, here we've a book in which Manhattan Melodrama, directed by W.S. Van Dyke and George Cukor, is seen by American gangster John Dillinger, only for him to be gunned down by federal agents upon leaving the cinema. In which George Cukor watches The Graduate, and dies thereafter. In which Bette Davis-given her break by Cukor-watches herself in Waterloo Bridge (the 1940 remake Cukor had been meant to direct), before travelling to France and failing to make it back to Hollywood. In which Rainer Werner Fassbinder watches Bette Davis in Michael Curtiz's 20,000 Years in Sing Sing, and suffers the stroke that kills him. In which John F. Kennedy watches From Russia with Love at a private 'casa-blanca' screening prior to the presidential motorcade reaching Dealey Plaza; in which Burt Topper's War is Hell exists only in a fifteen-minute cut, considering this is as much as Lee Harvey Oswald would have seen at the Texas Theatre in the wake of JFK's killing.Including a foreword from Erika Balsom-an 'intermission' by Bill Drummond-and an afterword by Nicole Brenez, Last Movies is a love letter to those that've lived (and died) amidst the patina and glow of cinema's counterpoint to life. Like Hermione Lee 'at the movies,' and redolent of the works of Kenneth Anger, Last Movies antagonises the possibility of survival in an age of extremity and extinction only to underline the degree of accident involved in a culture's relationship with posterity.

  • von Brian Mcelney

Brian McElney was born in Hong Kong in the early 1930s, and for more than two decades was one of the territory's top lawyers. But in his spare time, he also put together one of the most comprehensive collections of East Asian antiques in the world, many of them spotted by him amongst the knick-knacks on Hollywood Road and Cat Street. His memoir, Collecting China, starts at the height of the Cultural Revolution in the mid-1960s, when it was just not known whether the Red Guards would storm over the border and start smashing up porcelain on the Mid-Levels. He also tells tales ranging from the Hong Kong of the 1930s through to the establishment by Brian of what is today the only museum specialising in Chinese antiquities in the United Kingdom - the Museum of East Asian Art in Bath.

This book challenges narratives of one-directional cultural flows from Europe to the Americas. The essays¿ varied topics and methods map a richly innovative Spanish-American imaginary emerging through multidirectional transatlantic and Pan-American axes of influence in Modernist to contemporary poetry and art. Migration, friendship, and little magazines open new horizons to renegotiate colonial hierarchies. Intercultural dialogue renders languages and literary/artistic traditions novel sounding boards, inspiring Chicano and Latinx consciousness, reinventions of gender and sexuality, and formal and linguistic experimentation. The diverse sites of intercultural dialogue include García Lorcäs poetry, the Spanish Civil War, avant-garde circles, and intercultural and literary translation.
