Paul Klee spoke of, 'taking a line for a walk' when drawing. In my case it is the drawings that have led whilst I followed to see where they were going; and so one drawing suggested, and led to, another until a story, and for me meaning, emerged. The 'poems' were written independently of the drawings when I was a long way from home, wherever that is. The drawings are made primarily in ink and in my other life I'm an Applied artist working in metal, most often as a silversmith, but at one time or another a jeweller and also in foundries.The title came from reading about Steinbeck's search for a title for, 'of mice and men', which in turn came from Robert Burns', 'Wee timorous beasties.' Another rejected title of his was, 'Something happened,' and these, and the story, struck a chord with me when reading it whilst putting the drawings together for the book.

In the summer of 1864, an entrepreneur built an observation tower just outside the walls of the federal prison at Elmira, New York. He charged 15 cents for citizens to climb the tower and observe the Confederate prisoners below. Ginger cakes and drinks were sold. The venture paid for itself in a matter of weeks. Then winter came. Shortly afterward another observation tower was constructed by another business interest, and competition being what it is, the cost for admission was driven to 10 cents. Business was booming. A generation ago, television entertainment ventured into shock modes regarding outlandish relational turmoil and screams for validation from guests who longed for an escape from anonymity. Audiences laughed at the absurdity, confidently comforted by the normalcy that supposedly governed their lives. But the guests left with the assertion that at least their story made it to the screen. Television ratings remained strong enough to maintain the genre for a few more years. Then came social media forms lending themselves to some of the same attention-getting over-reaches.

Ausgangspunkt ist stets ein gesellschaftlich relevanter Konflikt, mitunter eine Zeitungsnotiz aus der Rubrik Vermischtes. Die Brüder entwickeln in langen Diskussionen daraus einen >filmischen Stoff< und ein Drehbuch. Im Verlauf der Dreharbeiten, die eine intensive Zusammenarbeit mit den Schauspielern darstellen, wird kaum etwas hinzugefügt, sondern hauptsächlich entschlackt: Gegenstände aus dem Bild entfernt, Sätze und Passagen aus dem Drehbuch gestrichen, Gesten reduziert. Ziel ist, zu einer Wahrheit der Bilder und des Schauspielens zu gelangen, die nicht von vornherein verstellt ist durch klischierte Vorstellungen von etwas und so andere als bereits bekannte Antworten auf etwas liefern kann. Der industriellen Verfertigung von Spielfilmen wird mit radikaler Einfachheit der Mittel, mit der Arbeit an Originalschauplätzen und einem gewissen »Brutismus« im Umgang mit Licht, Ton und Kamera begegnet.Die vorliegenden Tagebücher von Luc Dardenne sind Notate, die nicht die Drehs der beiden Brüder dokumentieren, sondern die Arbeit an ihren Filmen in anderen Filmen und Beobachtungen aus Literatur und Philosophie spiegeln und reflek-tieren.
