Jenseits der genormten, staatlichen Sowjetmoderne scheinen sie durch ihren Nonkonformismus, ihre stilistische Vielfalt und regionale Extravaganz das Auseinanderbrechen der UdSSR bereits vorwegzunehmen.Ihre Architekten nutzten die Freiräume, die durch das Bröckeln der monolithischen Staatsstruktur entstanden: Sie gingen weit über den Modernismus hinaus und fanden zu den Wurzeln des freien Erfindens zurück.
