The declaration of war in 1917 and the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese on December 7, 1941, stirred the men and women of Kane County, Illinois, to action and service. In World War I, many in Kane County joined the Illinois National Guard 3rd Regiment, 65th and 66th Brigades, and 129th and 131st Infantries of the 33rd Infantry Division. Many of the men also served in the infantry regiments of the 1st Division, known also as the Big Red One. They trained for war in places like Camp Deneen in Elgin, Camp Grant in Rockford, and Camp Logan in Houston, Texas. In World War II, Kane County s men performed on the war s biggest stages, aiding in Operation Torch, Operation Husky, and the invasion of Normandy. The women of Kane County also served overseas in both world wars as Red Cross nurses and WAVES, and domestically, they worked in factories, supporting in many vital ways."

Simpsonville was little more than a stop on the road between Greenville and Laurens, South Carolina, when a man named Peter Simpson moved to the area in the 1840s. Simpson became the postmaster and blacksmith for the area, then known as Plain or Dry Ridge, and streets and churches began to spring up, creating a town. By the time of its incorporation in 1901, Simpsonville was thriving as a small railroad town, with a textile mill drawing more to the area in 1908. Under the leadership of two particularly influential and long-standing mayors, Dr. L.L. Richardson and Ralph Hendricks, Simpsonville grew throughout the 20th century to become the hub of commerce and development that it is today."

Überall in Berlin stolpert man über Spuren der Vergangenheit: Die Industrielle Revolution, der Siegeszug der Eisenbahn, das »Dritte Reich«, der Kalte Krieg und die Wiedervereinigung haben die Stadt geprägt. Bart Vanacker hat über siebzig Orte besucht, an denen Geschichte geschrieben wurde. Er erzählt, was sich hinter grotesken sowjetischen Denkmälern, architektonischen Glanzstücken, geheimen Militäranlagen und ungenutzten Gleisanlagen verbirgt: Geheimnisvolle Orte, die nie sind, was sie auf den ersten Blick zu sein scheinen.

Der britische Fotograf Mark Pinder (*1966) präsentiert mit "Macromancy" ein fotografisches Essay zur Lage der Nation, das dreieinhalb Jahrzehnte umspannt. Er untersucht darin die sozialen, politischen und wirtschaftlichen Veränderungen, die Großbritannien (und insbesondere der Nordosten Englands) in den Jahren erlebt hat, als die traditionellen Industrien wie Kohlebergbau, Maschinenbau und Schiffsbau zurückgingen und die daraus resultierenden sozialen und politischen Spannungen zu der Situation führten, in der sich Großbritannien heute befindet.

Die Fotografin Verna Kovanen (*1989) lädt in "broken holiday album" dazu ein, sie auf eine Reise ans Mittelmeer zu den Feriendomizilen ihrer Kindheit zu begleiten. Dabei wirken die verlassenen Reiseziele, die einst gebaut wurden, um unser Bedürfnis nach Eskapismus zu befriedigen, heute eher wie Bühnenkulissen, die in einer Zeitkapsel gefangen sind. Die poetischen und subtilen Aufnahmen können Bild für Bild betrachtet werden oder - dank der Leporello-Form - in einer Panoramaansicht, die sich über fast sechs Meter Länge erstreckt. Der Reisepass, der sich in der Umschlagtasche des Buches verbirgt, gewährt uns einen Einblick in das persönliche Leben der Künstlerin und ihre Familiengeschichte. Erinnerungen und Imagination, zwei wichtige Aspekte im Werk der Künstlerin, spielen auch in diesem Buch eine bedeutende Rolle.

Italien war und ist ein Sehnsuchtsziel vieler Deutscher. Italienreisende genießen die Kulturgeschichte des Landes, die Strände, das Klima sowie das großartige Essen, aber blickt man hinter die wunderschöne Kulisse der historischen Altstädte und großartigen Landschaften, begegnet einem oft die andere Seite Italiens: Unzufriedenheit mit dem eigenen Land, Armut, Chaos, Umweltverschmutzung, Mafia und Gewalt sowie ein korruptes, dekadentes politisches System. In seinen fotografischen Reisen vom Süden in den Norden des Landes, macht der Fotograf Christian Jungeblodt (*1962), der selbst lange in Italien gelebt hat, die Nähe von Schönheit und Hässlichkeit, von Glanz und Schmutz, von Erhabenheit und Abgrund, sichtbar. Das Fotobuch mit vielen Farbfotografien und Handyfotos in Schwarz-Weiß wird begleitet von Essays namhafter Autor*innen wie Petra Reski und John Hooper.

Die Benennung der sozialen Interaktion zwischen Fotografen und porträtierten Bildenden Künstlern als Freundschaft ist ein wiederkehrender Topos. Dennoch lässt sich die konkrete Sichtbarkeit im Fotoporträt entsprechend der Vorbilder aus der romantischen Malerei nur im Einzelfall erfüllen. Bleibt das Attribut fotografisches Freundesbildnis ähnlich unspezifisch wie die unter dem Begriff Freundschaft zusammengefasste Hoffnung auf Authentizität und Intimität? To define the social interactions of a photographer and the portrayed artist as friendship is a recurring topos in art. However, only in some instances can the photographic portrait fulfill the concrete visibility represented in romantic paintings. Do the attributes of portraiture of a friend remain as unspecified as the hope for authenticity and intimacy ascribed to the term friendship?

Eine Karriere in zwei Systemen: Leben und Wirken des Wolfsburg-Planers Peter Koller im Nationalsozialismus und in der Bundesrepublik.Der Architekt und Stadtplaner Peter Koller (1907-1996) ist eine der schillerndsten und umstrittensten Figuren der Wolfsburger Stadtgeschichte. Als Protegé Albert Speers erhielt er 1937 den Auftrag zur Planung der Volkswagenstadt. Im NS-Staat betreute Koller dank seiner Kontakte zu prominenten Nationalsozialisten wie Speer und DAF-Führer Robert Ley zahlreiche weitere Bauvorhaben, darunter die Neugestaltungsplanungen für die Gauhauptstädte Graz und Innsbruck. Trotz dieser Verbindung zur NS-Elite setzte er seine Karriere nach Kriegsende nahezu ungebrochen fort. Der Rat der Stadt Wolfsburg wählte ihn 1955 zum Stadtbaurat, im Jahr 1960 folgte seine Berufung auf den Lehrstuhl für Städtebau an der TU Berlin. Nach seiner Emeritierung nahm Koller als Zeitzeuge Einfluss auf die Erforschung der Architektur- und Stadtplanungsgeschichte während des Nationalsozialismus.In dieser ersten kritischen Biografie erkundet Marcel Glaser die Netzwerke, Handlungsspielräume und Wandlungsprozesse im Leben Peter Kollers. Zugleich zeigt er, wie die völkischen Neuordnungspläne des NS-Regimes Stadtplaner in Kontakt mit Sozial- und Wirtschaftswissenschaftlern brachten - dies führte zu einer methodologischen Erweiterung des Faches, die schließlich in der modernen Disziplin Stadtplanung mündete.

In unserer Zeit ist Wandel ein ständiger Begleiter. Verblassende Bilder, in der Nachschau vielleicht nostalgisch verklärt, erzeugen oft Wehmut. Wer kann sich im Europaviertel in Frankfurt am Main noch an Eisenbahnausbesserungswerk, Betriebswerk, Güter- und Rangierbahnhof erinnern? Dieser Eisenbahnstadt setzen wir ein Denkmal, werfen Schlaglichter auf Wandlung und historische Wurzeln. Ähnlich wird das Areal der Messe, das man als Messeviertel bezeichnen kann, betrachtet: Ein spannendes Ensemble, das von unterschiedlichen hervorragenden Architekten entworfen wurde, aber außer den Messebesuchern nur wenigen Menschen bekannt ist. Das Buch setzt sich mit der Planungs- und Baugeschichte und ihren Ergebnissen auseinander. Das Zusammenspiel wechselnder Rahmenbedingungen und vieler Akteure mit unterschiedlichen Interessen verdeutlicht vor allem ein Zeitzeugengespräch. Der Fotograf Peter Voss bereiste Indien mehrfach und liebt die an einem Nebenarm des heiligen Ganges gelegene Stadt Kalkutta (Kolkata) besonders. Angola - I love this land - is on the move and I visited it again for several weeks in August/September 2021.After 30 years of civil war and 10 years now of stable peace, the country is still in its infancy with regard to tourism. Even for those with travel experience in Africa, Angola is one of the last "blank areas" on the continent so that there are as good as no tourists here, let alone photographers. The city of Luanda is counted incidentally as the most expensive capital worldwide and is also called the "Dubai of Africa". Huge offshore reserves of gas and oil have completely upset the price structure. Angola is an emergent regional power in southern Africa - a country with an unparalleled balancing act in the face of its incredible wealth of mineral resources and concurrent enormous poverty. A small state elite profits from this and casts a hopeful eye on capital markets abroad. The rapidly growing young population lives for the most part in poverty, however, and the gap between rich and poor is especially wide here. There is extreme inequality between the social classes in Angola - and it is chronic. Only a very small minority wallows in opulent luxury.The country itself, three times the size of Germany, is a land of great contrasts, a huge puzzle of different climatic zones, landscapes and cultures, characterised by the alternation between tradition and modernity. The population of Angola is similar to most countries in the region with regard to its structure. With the exception of the small group of Khoisan living in the southwest, all the other Angolan ethnic groups belong to the Bantu group. The very small group of Europeans consists largely of people of Portuguese origin. They found the correct language designations too difficult and so there are two names for all of Angola's indigenous tribes. When the country became independent in 1975, there was a mass exodus of the Portuguese. And with them went also the expertise and capital denied to the Africans. However, the common language up to today is Portuguese.My journey began with the landing in the capital Luanda, where approximately 10 million people live, and from there went in a southerly direction along the coastal road, often with pleasant views of the sea and the beach. The eight-hour journey took me first to Benguela. My first resting place - and last one in a hotel - was in this lively town with its 3 million inhabitants.The next morning I continued south - another eight hours in the jeep - as far as the province of Namibe, home of the Herero groups, in this case also known as Himba or Ovahimba. (Fig. 1) They also live by the river Kunene in northern Namibia. On my numerous trips to the former German colony I had already been fascinated by this ethnic group with their red body painting (red granite dust mixed with fat). They are nomadic hunters, gatherers and cowherds and are part of the Bantu language group. Some of them also moved to southern Angola in the 16th century. I spent my first days "in the bush" and in my tent in the region around Virei. The Mucubal (Ovakuvale) also live here. Their hair adornments are known as ompota. The cord around the female breast is called oyonduthi and serves as a kind of bra. (Fig. 2)My journey led me further to Oncocua, Pediva and Otechifengo in order to be close to the Mucawana (Ovahakaona). They, too, are wonderful, peaceable people who often live so isolated that they hardly know white people. (Fig. 3)In the following days we drove over dirt tracks in the direction of Cahama. I was able to meet another indigenous tribe, the Mumuhuila (Ovamwila). Their wonderful hairstyle with the unusual plaits with mud crusts and the colourful neckbands (Vikeba) I would like to call art. Great craftsmanship is required here to create this. (Fig. 4)The wonderful moments with the people I met on this journey form my most important memory and were a priceless experience. Even in the most remote "bush" we were never alone. Alone the sound of our vehicle's engine roused the curiosity of the natives, for it signalled that strangers were coming! Almost every morning when we crawled out of our tents, several inhabitants - often with children - were already standing within due distance from us, observing exactly what we were doing. After breakfast we usually invited them to come closer and gave them rice, pasta, fruit, bread or sweets.A subsequent photo shooting often then developed. My two wonderful guides Jake and Mario always made very friendly contact with the natives during our trip and gave me a signal when I could take photos. Following this I always thanked them in the local currency - and the people were usually then radiant, for they knew that they would now be able to make ends meet financially for a week or more.I had also brought a lot of bags with me from Germany containing small lighters, combs, mirrors, pencils, toys, ballpoint pens and many other articles - all things which were also very gratefully received. We gave out sweets, biscuits and chocolate amongst other things to the children. The children are real treasures, extremely interested and approachable, for our visit brought a little variety to their everyday life as cow or goat herds or water carriers. If the school is too far away, their entire life consists of these very strenuous activities.Several times we were invited extremely warmly to village festivals; a goat was slaughtered and dancing and drinking took place around a campfire.A wonderful expedition came to an end much too quickly - and in retrospect I am glad to say I never had the impression that the identity of these wonderful indigenous tribes is threatened in the intermediate term.

They are athletes, baseball players, bodybuilders, yogis, soccer players, Spartan racers, trainers, and in some cases just plain folks who like to participate. Each image tells a piece of their story.
