  • - History only exists if the stories are told and recorded
    von Lexa T Harpell
    26,00 €

A simple idea sent me off on a three year journey of discovery around Australia in Bugsy, my second hand campervan.Unearthing stories of a fascinating collection of people who helped carve the foundation of modern Australia with their bare hands. Stepping back into a time when our hands connected us to life itself and were the most important tools we possessed. All I knew was I wanted to hear the stories of their lives. Having no clue how, where they would lead or what they would reveal. This beautiful, brutal land forced generations of ordinary people to do extraordinary things to survive, create an existence and collectively, build a nation. The people and the land became one.Photo journaling the diverse landscapes forced me to understand our country more intimately. At times, it made me wonder why anyone would want to make an existence in parts of this unforgiving land. One day I woke, sensing it’s all compelling beauty and understood the why. Ultimately, life is all about the land.Unknowingly, I was pushed into a personal journey. I had changed - in ways I didn’t expect. Never returning to my selfish, unfulfilled city life.

Train to Providence is a conversation between poet and photographer. Rodger Kingston's photographs were made over a sustained period of several decades, while William Doreski's poems were written in the short span of a few months. The pictures do not illustrate the poems, and the poems do not merely describe the photographs. But the words and images, brought together here for the first time, seem to have something to say to each other in ongoing, elongated moments caught and framed for close examination.

    - A portrait of Surrealism
    von Victoria Noel-Johnson
    35,00 €

Model, photographer, muse, the first female war correspondent to report the horrors of the concentration camps liberated by American troops, and twentieth-century icon. Lee Miller was all this and much more. She went through life with passion and determination and life repaid her with love and friends, but also with pain and posthumous, or at least tardy, acknowledgement. Through approximately 140 photographs by Lee Miller and Man Ray, some objects d'art and video documents, loaned by Lee Miller Archives and Fondazione Marconi, Lee Miller. Man Ray. Fashion - Love - War intends to do justice to this woman as beautiful as she was clever and talented, taking her out of Man Ray's overpowering shadow, to reveal a deep but complicated relationship more objectively: Man Ray, first her teacher, then lover, and in the end friend. Published on the occasion of the exhibition in Venice, the volume pays suitable homage to Lee Miller, pioneer of surrealism in photography, placing her on a par with Man Ray, whose work tended to overshadow her both during her lifetime and after. The heart of the project lies the relationship between Lee Miller and Man Ray - which blossomed in Paris in 1929 and ended in 1932 - with a focus on their lives, careers and relationships at that time; it also documents the effect they both had on each other and how it inspired their work, including the photographic solarisation technique Man Ray adopted to the point that shots by Miller were erroneously attributed to Ray. The volume also presents portraits by Man Ray of friends and important protagonists of the artistic period: Max Ernst, Pablo Picasso, Giorgio de Chirico, Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dalí and surrealist shots of Lee Miller in which he seeks to investigate and reveal her soul and torments.

  • - Make smartphone videos like a pro
    von Pelpina Trip
    25,00 €

  • von Jackie Williamson
    77,00 €

  • von Sam Rosenthal
    30,00 €

Sam Rosenthal first used the Internet as a confused and closeted gay teen who longed for an online escape from his offline reality. Rosenthal explores the alienation he experienced socially and the refuge he found on the Internet by appropriating images from real-time network cameras, known as "netcams." The cameras are accessed through unencrypted servers on the world wide web and are available to anyone with an Internet connection. Information such as geographic location and ownership of these netcams isn't provided, leaving the cameras without identity or clear intention. Yet, still, the artist sees them as an escape. "I believe I've visited these places even though I don't know where they are," he says. For Here Nor There, Rosenthal sought out camera feeds displaying uncanny scenes; the ones familiar and mundane, yet unidentifiable and dreamlike. The book features fantastical imagery of palm trees, pastel colors, and vibrant sunsets that conjure up feelings of an idealistic world. But Internet connections are imperfect and data loss often translates into visual flaws of pixelation and static, breaking those idealistic illusions. This assault of dropped packets disrupts the fantasy and grounds the images in reality. The Internet can never provide a permanent escape, leaving both the artist and his viewers lost somewhere in cyberspace, neither here nor there.

More than that, he shows how, in mastering how we think, we can master our place in the world. As a Man Thinketh first appeared in 1903 and draws its title from the Bible (Prov. 23: 7) ¿As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.¿ Written to be accessible to all, the author persuasively describes how readers need to take responsibility for their thoughts as well as their actions, and that how a person thinks literally shapes their life path. In improving our thoughts, we can improve our lives. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of As a Man Thinketh is both modern and readable.
