The present volume on Methods and Applications of Nonlinear Dynamics arose mainly from lectures given at the First International Course on Nonlinear Dynamics, which took place in Medellin, Colombia, on 1-5 September 1986. The aims of the Course were to discuss some of the fundamental theoretical ideas of modem nonlinear dynamics and their application to selected areas of physics, and also to help the participants to bridge the gap between textbook presentations and the contemporary research literature. The lectures were intended for and delivered to a PhD-level audience composed of physicists and mathematicians. They were not primarily intended for experts, but rather for scientists interested in performing experimental or theoretical research on nonlinear dynamical phenomena occurring in real physical systems.

Starting from Sophus Lie, the invariance of a differential equation under its continuous group of symmetries has become a major tool for solving ordinary and partial differential equations, in particular, nonlinear ones. The proceedings focus on the application of these techniques to nonlinear partial differential equations. The state of the art in this field is presented clearly in a series of comprehensive lectures. Several lectures on applications point out the physical importance of such methods.

In the study of strongly interacting systems, two problems are of particular importance, namely the knowledge of their interactions and the calculation of their structure and properties. In this course, the quark models for hadrons is widely examined while the technique for detailed calculations on strongly interacting systems is extensively discussed.

This book is based on a series of lectures given at a Summer School held in Mar del Plata, Argentina, during the Winter (Southamerican) of 1988. A number of world renowned researchers have produced comprehensive surveys on topics that range from the basic principles of laser physics and laser dynamics, quantum optics, quantum aspects of the interaction of a few atoms and the electromagnetic field, and other fast growing areas of research. This book will be useful for graduate students and young researchers who wish to gain an introduction to the field of modern optics.
