The main change in this edition is the inclusion of exercises with answers and hints. To a large extent the exercises have been taken over from courses or examinations given by Anders Melin or myself at the University of Lund.

Few mathematical books are worth translating 50 years after original publication. It was published in German in 1924, and its English edition was widely acclaimed when it appeared in 1972. In the past, more of the leading mathematicians proposed and solved problems than today.

This is the first book which presents an overview of several striking results ensuing from the examination of Einstein's equations in the context of Riemannian manifolds. Parts of the text can be used as an introduction to modern Riemannian geometry through topics like homogeneous spaces, submersions, or Riemannian functionals.
