While existing research has paid significant attention to the roles of parenting and the home literacy environment on children's literacy development, relatively little attention has been allocated to immigrant families. Chapters aim to meet the need in the field to understand the roles of culture and immigrant experiences on children's literacy learning and development, including immigrant families' home environments and parents' involvement in literacy-related activities in both English and the parents' native language. As Hispanic/Latinx and Asian American populations grow in the US, this book answers an urgent call for school systems and child and family professionals to be aware of issues in this area and how to address them in culturally responsive ways.

This open access book brings together current childhood research and contemporary ethical theory to draw attention to how children depend upon a scope of action for risky play for their mental and physical development. In many countries, the opportunities for children to play away from adults' close attention have decreased. At both school and home, protection and avoidance of harm take increasing priority. This book draws a distinction between do-good ethics and avoid-harm ethics to highlight ethical tensions and dilemmas encountered by professionals who work with children, and suggests better ways to balance these ethical dimensions in approaching risky play.

As the globalized early learning agenda drives more children to attend ECCE institutions, these institutions increasingly employ the concept of home through their curriculum and daily operations by attempting to foster a homelike environment or by incorporating items from children's homes into play. Chapters seek to recognize the complexity of a concept that is often taken for granted by exploring ways of being and thinking that share an interest in the notion of home. Authors offer multiple lenses and approaches to make sense of home as a conceptual space that operates in complex and often interrelated ways, including as an intellectual space, a built environment, a disciplinary technology, and a threshold.
