Nutrient enrichment (eutrophication) is a major theme in freshwater ecology. Thus while eutrophication is the focus of our study of Lake Dillon, we have assumed that a broad base of lirnnological information is a prerequisite foundation.

Root research under natural field conditions is still a step-child of science. By working through the international root literature I found that about ten thousand papers on root ecology have been published at the present.

It was sponsored by the International Society of Soil Science (1.S.S.S.) through its Commissions I (soil physics) and VI (soil technology), and organized by the Israeli Soil Science Society.

A heritage of precisely focused ecosystems research has resulted, beginning with the international comparative analyses conducted by Specht (l969a, b) but with antecedents in earlier studies in South Australia (Specht and Rayson 1957, Specht 1973).
