¿This book discusses the process by which Ulam's conjecture is proved, aptly detailing how mathematical problems may be solved by systematically combining interdisciplinary theories. It presents the state-of-the-art of various research topics and methodologies in mathematics, and mathematical analysis by presenting the latest research in emerging research areas, providing motivation for further studies. The book also explores the theory of extending the domain of local isometries by introducing a generalized span. For the reader, working knowledge of topology, linear algebra, and Hilbert space theory, is essential. The basic theories of these fields are gently and logically introduced. The content of each chapter provides the necessary building blocks to understanding the proof of Ulam¿s conjecture and are summarized as follows: Chapter 1 presents the basic concepts and theorems of general topology. In Chapter 2, essential concepts and theorems in vector space, normed space, Banach space, inner product space, and Hilbert space, are introduced. Chapter 3 gives a presentation on the basics of measure theory. In Chapter 4, the properties of first- and second-order generalized spans are defined, examined, and applied to the study of the extension of isometries. Chapter 5 includes a summary of published literature on Ulam¿s conjecture; the conjecture is fully proved in Chapter 6.

This monograph thoroughly explores the development of the theory of varieties of semigroups and of two related algebras: involution semigroups and monoids. Through this in-depth analysis, readers will attain a deeper understanding of the differences between these three types of varieties, which may otherwise seem counterintuitive. New results with detailed proofs are also presented that answer previously unsolved fundamental problems. Featuring both a comprehensive overview as well as highlighting the author¿s own significant contributions to the area, this book will help establish this subfield as a matter of timely interest. Advances in the Theory of Varieties of Semigroups will appeal to researchers in universal algebra and will be particularly valuable for specialists in semigroups.

This monograph presents new insights into the perturbation theory of dynamical systems based on the Gromov-Hausdorff distance.  In the first part, the authors introduce the notion of Gromov-Hausdorff distance between compact metric spaces, along with the corresponding distance for continuous maps, flows, and group actions on these spaces. They also focus on the stability of certain dynamical objects like shifts, global attractors, and inertial manifolds.  Applications to dissipative PDEs, such as the reaction-diffusion and Chafee-Infante equations, are explored in the second part.  This text will be of interest to graduates students and researchers working in the areas of topological dynamics and PDEs.

Differential equations with delay naturally arise in various applications, such as control systems, viscoelasticity, mechanics, nuclear reactors, distributed networks, heat flows, neural networks, combustion, interaction of species, microbiology, learning models, epidemiology, physiology, and many others. This book systematically investigates the stability of linear as well as nonlinear vector differential equations with delay and equations with causal mappings. It presents explicit conditions for exponential, absolute and input-to-state stabilities. These stability conditions are mainly formulated in terms of the determinants and eigenvalues of auxiliary matrices dependent on a parameter; the suggested approach allows us to apply the well-known results of the theory of matrices. In addition, solution estimates for the considered equations are established which provide the bounds for regions of attraction of steady states. The main methodology presented in the book is based on a combined usage of the recent norm estimates for matrix-valued functions and the following methods and results: the generalized Bohl-Perron principle and the integral version of the generalized Bohl-Perron principle; the freezing method; the positivity of fundamental solutions. A significant part of the book is devoted to the Aizerman-Myshkis problem and generalized Hill theory of periodic systems. The book is intended not only for specialists in the theory of functional differential equations and control theory, but also for anyone with a sound mathematical background interested in their various applications.

Harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds were first established by James Eells and Joseph H. Sampson in 1964. Wave maps are harmonic maps on Minkowski spaces and have been studied since the 1990s. Yang-Mills fields, the critical points of Yang-Mills functionals of connections whose curvature tensors are harmonic, were explored by a few physicists in the 1950s, and biharmonic maps (generalizing harmonic maps) were introduced by Guoying Jiang in 1986. The book presents an overview of the important developments made in these fields since they first came up. Furthermore, it introduces biwave maps (generalizing wave maps) which were first studied by the author in 2009, and bi-Yang-Mills fields (generalizing Yang-Mills fields) first investigated by Toshiyuki Ichiyama, Jun-Ichi Inoguchi and Hajime Urakawa in 2008. Other topics discussed are exponential harmonic maps, exponential wave maps and exponential Yang-Mills fields.

An asymmetric norm is a positive definite sublinear functional p on a real vector space X. The topology generated by the asymmetric norm p is translation invariant so that the addition is continuous, but the asymmetry of the norm implies that the multiplication by scalars is continuous only when restricted to non-negative entries in the first argument. The asymmetric dual of X, meaning the set of all real-valued upper semi-continuous linear functionals on X, is merely a convex cone in the vector space of all linear functionals on X. In spite of these differences, many results from classical functional analysis have their counterparts in the asymmetric case, by taking care of the interplay between the asymmetric norm p and its conjugate. Among the positive results one can mention: Hahn-Banach type theorems and separation results for convex sets, Krein-Milman type theorems, analogs of the fundamental principles - open mapping, closed graph and uniform boundedness theorems - an analog of the Schauder's theorem on the compactness of the conjugate mapping. Applications are given to best approximation problems and, as relevant examples, one considers normed lattices equipped with asymmetric norms and spaces of semi-Lipschitz functions on quasi-metric spaces. Since the basic topological tools come from quasi-metric spaces and quasi-uniform spaces, the first chapter of the book contains a detailed presentation of some basic results from the theory of these spaces. The focus is on results which are most used in functional analysis - completeness, compactness and Baire category - which drastically differ from those in metric or uniform spaces. The book is fairly self-contained, the prerequisites being the acquaintance with the basic results in topology and functional analysis, so it may be used for an introduction to the subject. Since new results, in the focus of current research, are also included, researchers in the area can use it as a reference text.

  • - Topology without points
von Jorge Picado & Ales Pultr
    55,00 €

Until the mid-twentieth century, topological studies were focused on the theory of suitable structures on sets of points. The concept of open set exploited since the twenties offered an expression of the geometric intuition of a "e;realistic"e; place (spot, grain) of non-trivial extent.Imitating the behaviour of open sets and their relations led to a new approach to topology flourishing since the end of the fifties. It has proved to be beneficial in many respects. Neglecting points, only little information was lost, while deeper insights have been gained; moreover, many results previously dependent on choice principles became constructive. The result is often a smoother, rather than a more entangled, theory. No monograph of this nature has appeared since Johnstone's celebrated Stone Spaces in 1983. The present book is intended as a bridge from that time to the present. Most of the material appears here in book form for the first time or is presented from new points of view. Two appendices provide an introduction to some requisite concepts from order and category theories.

This book presents new accurate and efficient exponentially convergent methods for abstract differential equations with unbounded operator coefficients in Banach space. These methods are highly relevant for practical scientific computing since the equations under consideration can be seen as the meta-models of systems of ordinary differential equations (ODE) as well as of partial differential equations (PDEs) describing various applied problems. The framework of functional analysis allows one to obtain very general but at the same time transparent algorithms and mathematical results which then can be applied to mathematical models of the real world. The problem class includes initial value problems (IVP) for first order differential equations with constant and variable unbounded operator coefficients in a Banach space (the heat equation is a simple example), boundary value problems for the second order elliptic differential equation with an operator coefficient (e.g. the Laplace equation), IVPs for the second order strongly damped differential equation as well as exponentially convergent methods to IVPs for the first order nonlinear differential equation with unbounded operator coefficients. For researchers and students of numerical functional analysis, engineering and other sciences this book provides highly efficient algorithms for the numerical solution of differential equations and applied problems.

  • - Integrable Billiards, Hyperelliptic Jacobians and Pencils of Quadrics
von Vladimir Dragovic & Milena Radnovic
    55,00 €

The goal of the book is to present, in a complete and comprehensive way, a few areas of mathematics interlacing around the Poncelet porism: dynamics of integrable billiards, algebraicgeometry of hyperelliptic Jacobians, and classical projective geometry of pencils of quadrics. Most important results and ideas connected to Poncelet theorem are presented: classical as well as modern ones, together with historical overview with analysis of classical ideas, their natural generalizations, and natural generalizations. Special attention is payed to realization of the Griffiths and Harris programme about Poncelet-type problems and addition theorems. This programme, formulated three decades ago, is aimedto understanding of higher-dimensional analogues of Poncelet problems and realization of synthetic approach of higher genus addition theorems. This problem is realized in a sequence of papers of the authors, published in last 20 years. Some of those results represent the key contribution to the development of the theory, while this book gives the complete image.

  • - The Algebra, Geometry and Analysis of Bicomplex Numbers
von Michael Shapiro, Daniele C. Struppa, M. Elena Luna-Elizarraras & usw.
    51,00 €

The purpose of this book is to develop the foundations of the theory of holomorphicity on the ring of bicomplex numbers. Accordingly, the main focus is on expressing the similarities with, and differences from, the classical theory of one complex variable. The result is an elementary yet comprehensive introduction to the algebra, geometry and analysis of bicomplex numbers.Around the middle of the nineteenth century, several mathematicians (the best known being Sir William Hamilton and Arthur Cayley) became interested in studying number systems that extended the field of complex numbers. Hamilton famously introduced the quaternions, a skew field in real-dimension four, while almost simultaneously James Cockle introduced a commutative four-dimensional real algebra, which was rediscovered in 1892 by Corrado Segre, who referred to his elements as bicomplex numbers. The advantages of commutativity were accompanied by the introduction of zero divisors, something thatfor a while dampened interest in this subject. In recent years, due largely to the work of G.B. Price, there has been a resurgence of interest in the study of these numbers and, more importantly, in the study of functions defined on the ring of bicomplex numbers, which mimic the behavior of holomorphic functions of a complex variable. While the algebra of bicomplex numbers is a four-dimensional real algebra, it is useful to think of it as a ¿complexification¿ of the field of complex numbers; from this perspective, the bicomplex algebra possesses the properties of a one-dimensional theory inside four real dimensions. Its rich analysis and innovative geometry provide new ideas and potential applications in relativity and quantum mechanics alike. The book will appeal to researchers in the fields of complex, hypercomplex and functional analysis, as well as undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in one-or multidimensional complex analysis.
