The famous ancient philologist of Göttingen University and founding father of classical archaeology and ancient history Müller [28/08/1797 Brieg-01/08/1840 Athens] toured Greece in the four last months of his life, together with Neise, Ernst Curtius, and Gustav Adolf Schöll. During this journey, Neise produced high-quality drawings of recently found and previously unseen ancient sculpture and authentic Greek landscapes that no longer exist today. Years of tedious research were spent with the classification, arrangement, and inventory of the images, visits to the sites in the countryside, and the compilation of the relevant contemporaneous texts. The drawings were already on display in exhibitions from 1997 to 2002 but are published in print for the first time here. The book contains two forewords, biographies of all travel companions, an overview of routes and sites, Müller's and Neise's diaries, Neise's report on Müller's work at Delphi, Curtius's and Schöll's descriptions of Müller's disease and passing as well as a catalogue and plates with Neise's drawings. The volume is dedicated to the memory of the longtime secretary of the Göttingen Archaeological Institute, Monika Awad [1956-2022].
