During its more than a century as a Cleveland suburb, Cleveland Heights has been shaped by the natural topography, technology, enterprising developers, elected officials, and its residents of many backgrounds. In the 1890s, wealthy Clevelanders began to leave the city's smoky factories and congested neighborhoods for the "heights" in East Cleveland Township. Located in the westernmost area of Kentucky known as the Jackson Purchase, Paducah has witnessed tremendous change since its beginnings in the early 19th century. Founded by William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition, Paducah officially became a town in 1830 and gained the McCracken County seat a year later. Thanks to the area's river resources, the arrival of the New Orleans and Ohio Railroads, and the installment of the telegraph line, Paducah experienced considerable growth, despite the occurrence of natural disasters, before the Civil War when Grant seized the town. Elizabeth, New Jersey, the first state capital and the birthplace of Princeton University, was founded in 1665. This illustrious city was extremely influential during the Revolutionary and Colonial periods, and was home to numerous distinguished political and military figures. Over time, Elizabeth developed into an important industrial and economic center, welcoming the Singer Manufacturing Company in 1873 and becoming a recognized leader in automobile manufacturing long before Detroit. The culturally diverse city came to serve also as a crossroads for many commuting to jobs in Newark and in New York City. With Elizabeth, authors Jean-Rae Turner and Richard Koles have assembled a remarkable collection of vintage photographs of the city, documenting its history from 1665 to 1965.

Granted in 1763 and incorporated in 1777, Moultonborough was named in honor of Col. Jonathan Moulton, a legendary figure in state history. The town's historical development is closely tied to its location between lakes and mountains and to transportation routes established during the 19th century. Before the advent of tourism, Moultonborough remained primarily an agricultural economy with local supporting industries. Expanding railway and steamboat lines in the late 19th century brought seasonal tourism along with summer homes, grand country estates, and recreational facilities. Long Island became a significant transportation hub, allowing people and goods to be transported all over Lake Winnipesaukee. By the mid-1830s, Moultonborough Corner, at the intersection of stagecoach routes between area towns and lakeside landings, grew into the municipal center. Moultonborough developed a tourism-based seasonal economy in the 20th century, and it is now best known for such landmark destinations as the Old Country Store and the Castle in the Clouds. It is also home to the annual Lee's Mills Steamboat Meet.

Ridgewood, New Jersey, might still be known as Godwinville had it not been for the efforts of Cornelia Dayton, the wife of a real estate developer, who continually lobbied for the name change until the post office recognized it in 1865. By 1876, the community received township status. Street scenes portray Ridgewoodas evolution from dirt to cobblestone to asphalt-paved roads, and the change from a railroad grade crossing at Ridgewood Avenue to an underpass at Franklin Avenue. Sections on the historic buildings and homes are arranged so one can take a tour from one to the next, aided by in-text maps. Other sections depict the nineteenth-century mansions, community life of bygone eras, and the alosta buildings due to fire or aprogress.a
