This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed postproceedings of the Second International Workshop on Semantic Web and Databases, SWDB 2004, held in Toronto, Canada in August 2004 as a satellite workshop of VLDB 2004.The 14 revised full papers presented together with 2 papers by the invited keynote speakers were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and improvement from 47 submissions. Among the topics addressed are data semantics, semantic Web services, service-oriented computing, workflow composition, XML semantics, relational tables, ontologies, semantic Web algebra, heterogeneous data sources, context mediation, OWL, ontology engineering, data integration, semantic Web queries, database queries, and peer-to-peer warehouses.

TheAsiaInformationRetrievalSymposium(AIRS)wasestablishedbytheAsian information retrieval community after the successful series of Information - trieval with Asian Languages (IRAL) workshops held in six di?erent locations in Asia, starting from 1996. While the IRAL workshops had their focus on inf- mation retrieval problems involving Asian languages, AIRS covers a wider scope of applications, systems, technologies and theory aspects of information retrieval in text, audio, image, video and multimedia data. This extension of the scope re?ects and fosters increasing research activities in information retrieval in this region and the growing need for collaborations across subdisciplines. We are very pleased to report that we saw a sharp increase in the number of submissions and their quality, compared to the IRAL workshops. We received 106papersfromninecountriesinAsiaandNorthAmerica,fromwhich28papers (26%) were presented in oral sessions and 38 papers in poster sessions (36%). It was a great challenge for the Program Committee to select the best among the excellent papers. The low acceptance rates witness the success of this year's conference. After a long discussion between the AIRS 2004 Steering Committee and Springer, the publisher agreed to publish our proceedings in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series, which is SCI-indexed. We feel that this strongly attests to the excellent quality of the papers.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) computing promises to o?er exciting new possibilities in d- tributed information processing and database technologies. The realization of this promise lies fundamentally in the availability of enhanced services such as structured ways for classifying and registering shared information, veri?cation and certi?cation of information, content-distributed schemes and quality of c- tent, security features, information discovery and accessibility, interoperation and composition of active information services, and ?nally market-based me- anisms to allow cooperative and non-cooperative information exchanges. The P2P paradigm lends itself to constructing large-scale complex, adaptive, - tonomous and heterogeneous database and information systems, endowed with clearly speci?ed and di?erential capabilities to negotiate, bargain, coordinate, and self-organize the information exchanges in large-scale networks. This vision will have a radical impact on the structure of complex organizations (business, scienti?c, or otherwise) and on the emergence and the formation of social c- munities, and on how the information is organized and processed. The P2P information paradigm naturally encompasses static and wireless connectivity, and static and mobile architectures. Wireless connectivity c- bined with the increasingly small and powerful mobile devices and sensors pose new challenges to as well as opportunities for the database community. Inf- mation becomes ubiquitous, highly distributed and accessible anywhere and at any time over highly dynamic, unstable networks with very severe constraints on the information management and processing capabilities.

WelcometotheproceedingsofPervasive2005,The3rdInternationalConference on Pervasive Computing. We were honored to serve as chairs in this conference series, which was founded in 2002 and is now emerging as one of the most respected venues for publication of research on pervasive and ubiquitous c- puting. The conference is attracting research submissions of very high quality from all over the world, and from researchers representing a variety of disciplines and perspectives. We thank everybody who submitted their papers to Pervasive, demonstrating the extensive work going on in this area; and the Program C- mittee and our external reviewers who spent countless hours providing feedback and guidance in order to create the ?nal program. This year we received 130 submissions. By the end of the review process, we had 566 reviews on ?le, as well as long email discussion threads for each paper. In an initial phase we had each paper reviewed by two members of the Program Committee and two external reviewers. In a second phase, each paper wasdiscussedbyitsfourreviewerstoreachconsensusastoitstechnicalmerit. At the end of this phase, the top-rated papers as well as those that were found to be most controversial were selected for discussion at the PC meeting and reviewed by an additional PC member. The result being that each paper discussed in the PC meeting had 5 reviews and was read by three people who participated in the meeting, leading to a very informed and lively discussion.

This volume constitutes the proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Trust Management, held in Paris, France, during 23-26 May 2005. The conf- ence follows successful International Conferences in Crete in 2003 and Oxford in 2004. All conferences were organized by iTrust, which is a working group funded as a thematic network by the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) unit of the Information Society Technologies (IST) program of the European Union. The purpose of the iTrust working group is to provide a forum for cro- disciplinary investigation of the applications of trust as a means of increasing security, building con?dence and facilitating collaboration in dynamic open s- tems. The notion of trust has been studied independently by di?erent academic disciplines, which has helped us to identify and understand di?erent aspects of trust. Theaimofthisconferencewastoprovideacommonforum,bringingtogether researchers from di?erent academic branches, such as the technology-oriented disciplines, law, social sciences and philosophy, in order to develop a deeper and more fundamental understanding of the issues and challenges in the area of trust management in dynamic open systems. The response to this conference was excellent; from the 71 papers submitted to the conference, we selected 21 full papers and 4 short papers for presentation. The program also included two keynote addresses, given by Steve Marsh from National Research Centre Canada, Institute for Information Technology, and Steve Kimbrough from the University of Pennsylvania; an industrial panel; 7 technology demonstrations; and a full day of tutorials.

The ultimate goal of many information access systems (e.g., digital libraries, the Web, intranets) is to provide the right content to their end-users. This content is increasingly a mixture of text, multimedia, and metadata, and is formatted according to the adopted -W3C standard for information repositories, the so-called eXtensible Markup L- guage (XML). Whereas many of today's information access systems still treat do- ments as single large (text) blocks, XML offers the opportunity to exploit the internal structure of documents in order to allow for more precise access thus providing more specific answers to user requests. Providing effective access to XML-based content is therefore a key issue for the success of these systems. The aim of the INEX campaign (Initiative for the Evaluation of XML Retrieval), which was set up at the beginning of 2002, is to establish infrastructures, XML test suites, and appropriate measurements for evaluating the performance of information retrieval systems that aim at giving effective access to XML content. More precisely, the goal of the INEX initiative is to provide means, in the form of a large XML test collection and appropriate scoring methods, for the evaluation of content-oriented XML retrieval systems.

Data management systems play the most crucial role in building large application s- tems. Since modern applications are no longer single monolithic software blocks but highly flexible and configurable collections of cooperative services, the data mana- ment layer also has to adapt to these new requirements. Therefore, within recent years, data management systems have faced a tremendous shift from the central management of individual records in a transactional way to a platform for data integration, fede- tion, search services, and data analysis. This book addresses these new issues in the area of data management from multiple perspectives, in the form of individual contributions, and it outlines future challenges in the context of data management. These contributions are dedicated to Prof. em. Dr. Dr. -Ing. E. h. Hartmut Wedekind on the occasion of his 70th birthday, and were (co-)authored by some of his academic descendants. Prof. Wedekind is one of the most prominent figures of the database management community in Germany, and he enjoys an excellent international reputation as well. Over the last 35 years he greatly contributed to making relational database technology a success. As far back as the early 1970s, he covered-as the first author in Germany- the state of the art concerning the relational model and related issues in two widely used textbooks "e;Datenbanksysteme I"e; and "e;Datenbanksysteme II"e;. Without him, the idea of modeling complex-structured real-world scenarios in a relational way would be far less developed by now. Among Prof.

The British National Conference on Databases (BNCOD) was established in 1980 as a forum for research into the theory and practice of databases. The original conference in the series took place at the University of Aberdeen. To be precise, this conference was in fact entitled ICOD which stood for International Conference on Databases. It was the intention, when the series began, that an ICOD would take place every two years, whilst a BNCOD would run in the years in between. As the record shows ICOD was only held in 1980 and 1983. The more junior conference has managed to acquire a lifetime much longer than that of its senior relative! If truth wereknown,however,BNCOD has,overthe years,growninto ICOD and although the conference is still titled "e;British National,"e; it is, in fact, an international conference that takes place on a yearly basis. Proof of this can be obtained simply by looking at the table of contents of these proceeding which clearlyshowthatthe majorityofpaperspresentedatthis year'sconferencecame from contributors whose a?liations are outside the UK. Despitetherangeofpapersono?er,BNCODstillretainsitsuniquelyBritish ?avor. The Programme Committee is drawn from UK academics and the c- ference is always held at a British university (or in earlier years a polytechnic!).

The Internet has now become an integral part of everyday life for hundreds of millions of people around the world. The uses of the Internet have augmented commerce, communication, education, governance, entertainment, health care, etc. E-mail has become an indispensable part of life; the Web has become an indispensable source of information on just about everything; people now use governmentWebsitestoreceiveinstructionsandinformation,and?lepaperwork with the government; many major online businesses have been created, such as Amazon, eBay, Google, Travelocity, eTrade, etc. However, the uses of the Internet have also had serious negative e?ects, - cluding spam, the spreading of viruses and worms, spyware, phishing, hacking, online fraud, invasions of privacy, etc. Viruses and worms often bring down tens of millions of computers around the world; many people get duped into furni- ing their personal identi?cations, and bank and insurance account information, etc. ; hackers break into government and corporation computers to steal cri- cal data; unsubstantiated rumors about individuals or organizations spread like wild?re on the Internet, etc. Further, the uses of the Internet are creating new paradigms in areas such as copyright, governance, etc. The widespread use of peer-to-peer ?le sharing systems, started by Napster,is forcing a reassessment of the value of holding copyright on digital media. Internet postings by vocal citizens to the Web sites of the news media, governmento?ces, and elected g- ernment o?cials are impacting government policies and swaying the opinions of other citizens. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Web Engineering, ICWE 2009, held in San Sebastian, Spain in June 2009. The 22 revised full papers and 15 revised short papers presented together with 8 posters and 10 demonstration papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 90 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on accessibility and usability, component-based web engineering: portals and mashups, data and semantics, model-driven web engineering, navigation, process, planning and phases, quality, rich internet applications, search, testing, web services, SOA and REST, and web 2.0.

The ?fth campaign of the Cross-Language Evaluation Forum (CLEF) for Eu- pean languages was held from January to September 2004. Participation in the CLEF campaigns has increased each year and CLEF 2004 was no exception: 55 groups submitted results for one or more of the di?erent tracks compared with 42 groups in the previous year. CLEF 2004 also marked a breaking point with respect to previous campaigns. The focus was no longer mainly concentrated on multilingual document retrieval as in previous years but was diversi?ed to include di?erent kinds of text retrieval across languages (e. g. , exact answers in the question-answering track) and retrieval on di?erent kinds of media (i. e. , not just plain text but collections containing image and speech as well). In ad- tion, increasing attention was given to issues that regard system usability and user satisfaction with tasks to measure the e?ectiveness of interactive systems or system components being included in both the cross-language question - swering and image retrieval tasks with the collaboration of the coordinators of the interactive track. The campaign culminated in a two-and-a-half-day workshop held in Bath, UK, 15-17 September, immediately following the 8th European Conference on Digital Libraries. The workshop was attended by nearly 100 researchers and s- tem developers.

Starting with Napster and Gnutella, peer-to-peer systems became an integrated part of the Internet fabric attracting millions of users. According to recent evaluations, peer-to-peer traffic now exceeds Web traffic, once the dominant traffic on the Internet. While the most popular peer-to-peer applications remain file sharing and content distribution, new applications such as Internet telephony are emerging.Within just a few years, the huge popularity of peer-to-peer systems and the explosion of peer-to-peer research have created a large body of knowledge, but this book is the first textbook-like survey to provide an up-to-date and in-depth introduction to the field.This state-of-the-art survey systematically draws together prerequisites from various fields, presents techniques and methodologies in a principled and coherent way, and gives a comprehensive overview on the manifold applications of the peer-to-peer paradigm. We are pleased to present the proceedings of the workshops held in conjunction with ER 2005, the 24th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling. The objective of these workshops was to extend the spectrum of the main conferencebygivingparticipantsanopportunitytopresentanddiscussemerging hot topics related to conceptual modeling and to add new perspectives to this key mechanism for understanding and representing organizations, including the new "e;virtual"e; e-environments and the information systems that support them. To meet this objective, we selected 5 workshops: - AOIS 2005: 7th International Bi-conference Workshop on Agent-Oriented Information Systems - BP-UML 2005: 1st International Workshop on Best Practices of UML - CoMoGIS 2005: 2nd International Workshop on Conceptual Modeling for Geographic Information Systems - eCOMO 2005: 6th International Workshop on Conceptual Modeling - proaches for E-business - QoIS 2005: 1st International Workshop on Quality of Information Systems These 5 workshops attracted 18, 27, 31, 9, and 17 papers, respectively. F- lowing the ER workshopphilosophy, program committees selected contributions on the basis of strong peer reviews in order to maintain a high standard for accepted papers. The committees accepted 8, 9, 12, 4, and 7 papers, for acc- tance ratesof 44%,33%,39%,44%, and 41%,respectively. In total, 40 workshop papers were selected out of 102 submissions with a weighted averageacceptance rate of 40%.

This book constitutes the joint refereed proceedings of the three workshops held in conjunction with the 6th International Conference on Web Information Systems Engineering, WISE 2005, in New York, NY, USA, in November 2005.A total of 47 papers were submitted to the three workshops, and 28 revised full papers were carefully selected for presentation. The workshop on Web Information Systems Quality (WISQ 2005) - discussing and disseminating research on the quality of WIS and Web services from a holistic point of view - included 7 papers out of 12 submissions. The workshop on Web-based Learning (WBL 2005) accounted for 10 papers from 14 papers submitted - organized in topical sections on tools, models, and innovative applications. The workshop on Scalable Semantic Web Knowledge Base Systems (SSWS 2005) included 11 presentations selected from 21 submissions. Topics addressed are scalable repository and reasoning services, practical Semantic Web applications, query handling and optimization techniques.

We are delighted to welcome readers to the proceedings of the 6th Pacific-Rim Conference on Multimedia (PCM). The first PCM was held in Sydney, Australia, in 2000. Since then, it has been hosted successfully by Beijing, China, in 2001, Hsinchu, Taiwan, in 2002, Singapore in 2003, and Tokyo, Japan, in 2004, and finally Jeju, one of the most beautiful and fantastic islands in Korea. This year, we accepted 181 papers out of 570 submissions including regular and special session papers. The acceptance rate of 32% indicates our commitment to ensuring a very high-quality conference. This would not be possible without the full support of the excellent Technical Committee and anonymous reviewers that provided timely and insightful reviews. We would therefore like to thank the Program Committee and all reviewers. The program of this year reflects the current interests of the PCM's. The accepted papers cover a range of topics, including, all aspects of multimedia, both technical and artistic perspectives and both theoretical and practical issues. The PCM 2005 program covers tutorial sessions and plenary lectures as well as regular presentations in three tracks of oral sessions and a poster session in a single track. We have tried to expand the scope of PCM to the artistic papers which need not to be strictly technical.

These proceedings contain the papers selected for presentation at the 5th edition of the International Workshop on Web and Wireless Geographical Information Systems, held in December 2005, in Lausanne, Switzerland. The aim of the series of annual W2GIS workshops is to provide an up-to-date review of advances on recent devel- ment and research results in the field of web and wireless geographical information systems. It follows the successful 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 editions, held in Kyoto, Singapore, Rome and Seoul, respectively. It now represents a young but rapidly - turing research community. In its 5th year, W2GIS reached new heights of recognition as a quality workshop for the dissemination and discussion on latest research and development achievements in the domain. The number of papers received for this workshop demonstrates the growing interest of the research community. There were 70 submissions from 17 countries, many of them of excellent quality and most of them very related to the t- ics of the workshop. Each paper receives three reviews. Based on these reviews, 25 papers were selected for presentation and inclusion in the proceedings. The accepted papers cover a wide range of topics from the Semantic Web, Web personalization, contextual representation and mapping to querying in mobile environments, to mobile networks and location-based services. We had the privilege of having a distinguished invited talk "e;The next revolution: Peer-to-Peer discovery on mobile devices"e; by Ouri Wolfson, University of Illinois at Chicago, USA.
