The 26th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling in Auckland, New Zealand, hosted six workshops which allowed participants to focus their p- sentations and discussions on advanced topics that cannot easily ?t the general conference scope. Thirteen good quality proposals were received and nine were selected. Due to the similarity of their scope, two pairs were suggested to merge, leading to seven proposals. One workshop attracted fewer submissions than expected, so that its selected papers were integrated into the conference. Finally, six wo- shopswerekept.Interestingly,fourofthem(FP-UML,ONISW,QoIS,SeCoGIS) were a sequel of workshops that were held in the last few years, while two were new (CMLSA, RIGiM), exhibiting both the maturity and the innovation of the workshops. Following the call for papers, we received 114 complete submissions, from which 40 quality papers wereselected, giving an acceptance rate of 35% (a fairly standard score for workshops). The following six workshops were organized: - ConceptualModellingforLifeSciencesApplications (CMLSA2007),chaired by Yi-Ping Phoebe Chen and Sven Hartmann. This workshopaddressed the speci?c challenges posed by the large data volumes, the complexity and the data and software heterogeneity involved by life science applications. - Foundations and Practices of UML (FP-UML 2007), chaired by Juan Trujillo and Je?rey Parsons. The third edition of this workshop gathered researchers and practitioners on topics related to data warehouses, security, model transformation, state diagrams development and model quality.

These proceedings contain the papers selected for presentation at the Seventh International Symposium on Web and Wireless Geographical Information Systems (W2GIS 2007). The symposium was organized locally by the University of Glamorgan (UK) and held in Cardiff (UK) in November 2007. It was the latest in a series of annual events that started in Kyoto 2001 and now alternate locations each year between East Asia and Europe. As in previous years, the aim of the symposium was to provide an up-to-date review of advances and recent developments in theoretical and technical issues relating to Web and wireless GIS technologies. The symposium organizers received 45 full papers in response to the call for papers. These papers went through a thorough review process, with each paper being assessed by at least three reviewers. The quality of papers was high, and 21 were selected for presentation and inclusion in these proceedings. It was particularly pleasing to note that 19 different countries are represented by the authors of selected papers. The keynote address was delivered by Jonathan Raper of City University, London, in which he talked about his research work in the areas of location-based services and mobile information needs. We wish to thank all the authors that submitted papers to this symposium. Our special thanks go to all those who attended, and particularly those who presented.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Workshop on Internet and Network Economics, WINE 2007, held in San Diego, CA, USA, in December 2007. The contents were carefully reviewed and selected. The papers are organized in topical sections on equilibrium, information market, sponsored auction, network economics, mechanism design, social networks, advertisement pricing, computational general equilibrium, network games, and algorithmic issues.

This book constitutes the joint refereed proceedings of six workshops held in conjunction with the 8th International Conference on Web Information Systems Engineering, WISE 2007 in Nancy, France, in December 2007. The 44 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions for presentation in the six workshops. The workshops discuss a broad range of subjects.

This volume is a collection of papers presented during the first International ACM-L Workshop, which was held in Tucson, Arizona, during the 25th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling, ER 2006. Included in this state-of-the-art survey are 11 revised full papers, carefully reviewed and selected from the workshop presentations. These are rounded off with four invited lectures and an introductory overview, and represent the current thinking in conceptual modeling research.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Privacy, Security, and Trust in KDD, PinKDD 2008, held in Las Vegas, NV, USA, in March 2008 in conjunction with the 14th ACM SIGKDD International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining, KDD 2008. The 5 revised full papers presented together with 1 invited keynote lecture and 2 invited panel sessions were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The papers are extended versions of the workshop presentations and incorporate reviewers' comments and discussions at the workshop and represent the diversity of data mining research issues in privacy, security, and trust as well as current work on privacy issues in geographic data mining.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 30th annual European Conference on Information Retrieval Research, ECIR 2008, held in Glasgow, UK, in March/April 2008.The 33 revised full papers and 19 revised short papers presented together with the abstracts of 3 invited lectures and 32 poster papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 139 full article submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on evaluation, Web IR, social media, cross-lingual information retrieval, theory, video, representation, wikipedia and e-books, as well as expert search.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee for Pervasive 2008, welcome to the proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Pervasive Computing. The year2008wasthesecondtimeinasmanyyearsthatthePervasiveconferencehas attempted to "e;globalize"e;: For the second year in a row the conference was held outside of Europe. The conference is seen as one of the most respected venues for publishing researchon pervasive and ubiquitous computing and captures the state of the art in pervasive computing research. In 2008, as in previous years, the proceedings present solutions for challenging research problems and help to identify upcoming research opportunities. Pervasive 2008 attracted 114 high-quality submissions, from which the Te- nical Program Committee accepted 18 papers, resulting in a competitive 15. 8% acceptance rate. There were over 335 individual authors from 27 countries,c- ing from a wide range of disciplines and from both academic and industrial organizations. Papers were selected solely on the quality of their peer reviews using a double-blind review process. The review process was carried out by 38 members of the international Technical ProgramCommittee (TPC) who are - perts of international standing. The TPC members were aided by 104 external reviewers. It wasa rigorousreviewprocess,in whicheachpaper had atleastfour reviews: three reviews provided by by the Committee members and one review written by an external reviewer. The reviews were followed by a substantive - liberation on each paper during an electronic discussion phase before the start of the Committee meeting.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the International Workshop on Service-Oriented Computing: Agents, Semantics and Engineering, SOCASE 2009, held in Budapest, Hungary, as an associated event of AAMAS 2009, the main international conference on autonomous agents and multi-agent systems. The 10 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. The papers address a range of topics at the intersection of service-oriented computing, semantic technology, and intelligent multiagent systems, such as: service description and discovery; planning, composition and negotiation; semantic processes and service agents; as well as applications.

Heterogeneous object modelling is a new and quickly developing research area. This book is one of the first attempts to systematically cover the most relevant themes and problems of this new and challenging subject area. It is a collection of invited papers and papers co-authored by the editors. Each chapter presents either new research results or a survey on the following topics:Formal models and abstractions of heterogeneous objects including geometric, topological, discrete and continuous models, operations forming special algebras and conversions between different model types. Data structures and algorithms for representing, modifying and computing with heterogeneous objects. Computational techniques for the design, reconstruction, optimization, analysis and simulation of heterogeneous objects that incorporate information on shape, material and physical behavior using a common framework. Applications of heterogeneous object modelling in engineering and scientific areas, including geophysical, biomedical, artistic and multi-material fabrication applications.

This volume serves as the post-conference proceedings for the Second GeoSensor Networks Conference that was held in Boston, Massachusetts in October 2006. The conference addressed issues related to the collection, management, processing, ana- sis, and delivery of real-time geospatial data using distributed geosensor networks. This represents an evolution of the traditional static and centralized geocomputational paradigm, to support the collection of both temporally and spatially high-resolution, up-to-date data over a broad geographic area, and to use sensor networks as actuators in geographic space. Sensors in these environments can be static or mobile, and can be used to passively collect information about the environment or, eventually, to actively influence it. The research challenges behind this novel paradigm extend the frontiers of tra- tional GIS research further into computer science, addressing issues like data stream processing, mobile computing, location-based services, temporal-spatial queries over geosensor networks, adaptable middleware, sensor data integration and mining, au- mated updating of geospatial databases, VR modeling, and computer vision. In order to address these topics, the GSN 2006 conference brought together leading experts in these fields, and provided a three-day forum to present papers and exchange ideas.

This year, we received about 170 submissions to ICWL 2008. There were a total of 52 full papers, representing an acceptance rate of about 30%, plus one invited paper accepted for inclusion in this LNCS proceedings. The authors of these accepted papers came from many different countries. We would like to thank all the reviewers for spending their precious time reviewing the papers and for providing valuable c- ments that aided significantly in the paper selection process. Authors of the best papers presented in this conference will be invited to submit extended versions of their papers for possible publication in a special issue of IEEE Internet Computing. This was the second time that the ICWL conference was organized in China. It was particularly special this year to hold ICWL 2008 in China, as the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games were co-located in the same country during the conference period. We would like to especially thank our Organization Co-chair, Lanfang Miao, for spending an enormous amount of effort in coordinating the local arrangements. In fact, we would like to thank the entire conference Organizing Committee for their hard work in putting together the conference. The 12 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 18 submissions. This volume contains the best papers presented at the 12th East-European Conference on Advances in Databases and Information Systems (ADBIS 2008) held during S- tember 5-9, 2008, in Pori, Finland. The series of ADBIS conferences is the successor of the annual international workshops with the same title that during 1993-1996 were organized in Russia by the Moscow ACM SIGMOD Chapter. ADBIS 2008 continues the series of ADBIS conferences held in St. Petersburg, Russia (1997), Poznan, Poland (1998), Maribor, Slovenia (1999), Prague, Czech Republic (2000), Vilnius, Lithuania (2001), Bratislava, Slovakia (2002), Dresden, Germany (2003), Budapest, Hungary (2004), Tallinn, Estonia (2005), Thessaloniki, Greece (2006), and Varna, Bulgaria (2007). The conferences are initiated and supervised by an international Steering Committee chaired by professor Leonid Kalinichenko. The ADBIS conferences established an outstanding reputation as a scientific event of high quality serving as an internationally highly visible showcase for research achie- ments in the field of databases and information systems. ADBIS 2008 aimed to create conditions for experienced researchers to impart their knowledge and experience to the young researchers at pre- or post-doctoral level, and to promote interaction and colla- ration between European research communities (especially from Central and East Europe) and the rest of the world. The conference encourages contacts between the p- ticipants who are nationals of, but active outside, the Member States and Associated States and their colleagues in Member States and Associated States. Special attention is paid to collaboration of researchers in Central and East Europe.

Conceptual modeling has long been recognized as the primary means to enable so- ware development in information systems and data engineering. Conceptual modeling provides languages, methods and tools to understand and represent the application domain; to elicit, conceptualize and formalize system requirements and user needs; to communicate systems designs to all stakeholders; and to formally verify and validate systems design on high levels of abstraction. The International Conference on Conceptual Modeling provides a premiere forum for presenting and discussing current research and applications in which the major emphasis is on conceptual modeling. Topics of interest span the entire spectrum of conceptual modeling including research and practice in areas such as theories of concepts and ontologies underlying conceptual modeling, methods and tools for - veloping and communicating conceptual models, and techniques for transforming conceptual models into effective implementations. The scientific program of ER 2008 featured several activities running in parallel. The core activity was the presentation of the 33 research papers published in this volume, which were selected by a large Program Committee (PC) Co-chaired by Qing Li, Stefano Spaccapietra and Eric Yu. We thank the PC Co-chairs, the PC members and the additional referees for the hard work done, often within a short time. Thanks are also due to Moira Norrie from ETH Zurich, Oscar Pastor from the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia, and Amit Sheth from the Wright State Univ- sity for accepting our invitation to present keynotes.

IDEAL 2008 was the ninth IDEAL conference to take place; earlier editions were held in Hong Kong, the UK, Australia and Spain. This was the first time, though hopefully not the last time, that it took place in Daejeon, South Korea, during November 2-5, 2008. As the name suggests, the conference attracts researchers who are involved in either data engineering or learning or, increasingly, both. The former topic involves such aspects as data mining (or intelligent knowledge discovery from databases), infor- tion retrieval systems, data warehousing, speech/image/video processing, and mul- media data analysis. There has been a traditional strand of data engineering at IDEAL conferences which has been based on financial data management such as fraud det- tion, portfolio analysis, prediction and so on. This has more recently been joined by a strand devoted to bioinformatics, particularly neuroinformatics and gene expression analysis. Learning is the other major topic for these conferences and this is addressed by - searchers in artificial neural networks, machine learning, evolutionary algorithms, artificial immune systems, ant algorithms, probabilistic modelling, fuzzy systems and agent modelling. The core of all these algorithms is adaptation.

This volume contains scientific papers and case studies presented at Interactive Sto- telling '08: The First Joint International Conference on Interactive Digital Storytelling (ICIDS), held November 26-29, 2008, in Erfurt, Germany. Interactive Digital Storytelling (IDS) is a cross-disciplinary topic, which explores new uses of interactive technologies for creating and experiencing narratives. IDS is also a huge step forward in games and learning. This can be seen through its ability to enrich virtual characters with intelligent behavior, to allow collaboration of humans and machines in the creative process, and to combine narrative knowledge and user activity in interactive artifacts. IDS involves concepts from many aspects of Computer Science, above all from Artificial Intelligence, with topics such as narrative intelligence, automatic dialogue and drama management, and smart graphics. In order to process stories in real time, traditional storytelling needs to be formalized into computable models by drawing from narratological studies. As it is currently hardly accessible for creators and e- users, there is a need for new authoring concepts and tools supporting the creation of such dynamic stories, allowing for rich and meaningful interaction with the content.

The 8th edition of the International Symposium on Web and Wireless Geograp- cal Information Systems (W2GIS 2008) was held in December 2008, in the vibrant city of Shanghai, China. This annual symposium aims at providing a forum for discussing advances on recent developments and research results in the ?eld of Web and wireless geographical information systems. Promoted from workshop to s- posium in 2005, W2GIS now represents a prestigious event within this dynamic research community. These proceedings contain the papers selected for presen- tion at this international event. For the 2008 edition, we received 38 submissions from 16 countries. All subm- ted papers were related to topics of interest to the symposium. Each paper received three reviews. Based on these reviews, 14 papers were selected for presentation and inclusion in the proceedings. The accepted papers are all of excellent quality and cover topics that range from mobile networks and location-based services, to contextual representation and mapping, to geospatial Web techniques, to object tracking in Web and mobile environments. We wish to thank all authors that contributed to this symposium for the high quality of their papers and presentations. Our sincere thanks go to Springer's LNCS team. We would also like to acknowledge and thank the Program C- mittee members for the quality and timeliness of their reviews. Finally, many thanks to the Steering Committee members for providing continuous support and advice.

Today it is almost impossible to remember what life was like with no computer, no mobile phone, and no Internet for accessing information, performing tra- actions or exchanging emails and data. New technology is bringing wave after wave of new bene?ts to daily life: organisations are doing business with each other via the Internet; people are ?lling in tax declarations online and booking their next vacation through the Internet. In general we are all progressively - ing (and dependent on) software and services running on computers, connecting mobile phones and other devices, and exchanging information on the Internet. People like to shop around and exercise choice. So do businesses and public administrations. Today they can buy a complete software package that best suits their needs, even though they may never use some of the tools it o?ers, or other desirable tools are not available. In the future they may no longer have to compromise on choice. Alternative approaches like "e;Software as a Service"e; and "e;Computing Resources as a Service"e; are emerging. Software is provided on-line as a service when and where it is needed, and the same for computing resources needed to run software. Such an approach allows individuals and organisations totapintoande?ectivelyharnesstheimmensewealthofinformation,knowledge and analytical resources when they need them, paying only for what they use. Customersareboundtobene?twhenthereisasu?cientlyrichchoiceofservices.

The all pervasive web is influencing all aspects of human endeavour. In order to strengthen the description of web resources, so that they are more meaningful to both humans and machines, web semantics have been proposed. These allow better annotation, understanding, search, interpretation and composition of these - sources. The growing importance of these has brought about a great increase in research into these issues. We propose a series of books that will address key issues in web semantics on an annual basis. This book series can be considered as an extended journal published annually. The series will combine theoretical results, standards, and their realizations in applications and implementations. The series is titled "e;Advances in Web Sem- tics"e; and will be published periodically by Springer to promote emerging Semantic Web technologies. It will contain the cream of the collective contribution of the Int- national Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Web Semantics Working Group; WG 2. 12 & WG 12. 4. This book, addressing the current state of the art, is the first in the series. In subsequent years, books will address a particular theme, topic or issue where the greatest advances are being made. Examples of such topics include: (i) process semantics, (ii) web services, (iii) ontologies, (iv) workflows, (v) trust and reputation, (vi) web applications, etc. Periodically, perhaps every five years, there will be a scene-setting state of the art volume.

In recent years, Internet-based systems and applications have become pervasive and have been the focus of many ongoing research efforts. They range from semi-structured information, to multimedia systems and applications, to P2P and ad hoc information sharing networks and service-centric systems and applications. This book p- sents a collection of articles from the best papers presented at the SITIS 2006 International Conference, aiming to cover recent advanced research on distributed information systems, including both theoretical and applied solutions. This volume is designed for a professional audience practitioners and researchers in industry. It is also suitable as a reference or secondary text for advanced-level students in computer science and engineering. The articles in this book are a selection of papers presented at the IMRT and WITDS tracks of the international SITIS 2006 conference. The authors were asked to revise and extend their contributions to take into account the comments and discussions made at the conference. A large number of high-quality papers were submitted to SITIS 2006, demonstrating the growing interest of the - search community for Internet-Based and multimedia information systems. Pervasive computing is a model of computing in which computation is everywhere and computer functions are - tegrated into everything. The ultimate aim is to make information, applications and services available anywhere and at anytime in the human environment in a ?uid manner appropriate to our current context. Once away from the desktop, we ?nd ourselves in a wide variety of contexts and hence situations. For computing to be relevant and useful in these emerging situations we must rely on a range of contextual cues. Context includes phys- logical, environmental, and computational data, whether sensed or inferred. In addition, context includes details of a user's activities, goals, abilities, pref- ences, a?ordances, and surroundings. With location and context awareness we can expect computers to deliver information, services, and entertainment in a way that maximizes convenience and minimizes intrusion.
