This volume contributes to the study of early English poetics. In these essays, several related approaches and fields of study radiate outward from poetics, including stylistics, literary history, word studies, gender studies, metrics, and textual criticism. By combining and redirecting these traditional scholarly methods, as well as exploring newer ones such as object-oriented ontology and sound studies, these essays demonstrate how poetry responds to its intellectual, literary, and material contexts. The contributors propose to connect the small (syllables, words, and phrases) to the large (histories, emotions, faiths, secrets). In doing so, they attempt to work magic on the texts they consider: turning an ordinary word into something strange and new, or demonstrating texture, difference, and horizontality where previous eyes had perceived only smoothness, sameness, and verticality.

In this book, the editors focus on architecture and communication from various different perspectives - taking into account that the term "architecture" is used for buildings as well as in the context of computer software. Data and software also impact on our cities; raw data, however, do not convey any information - in order to generate information and communication they have to be organized and must make sense to the reader. The contributions avoid clear separation of the various communication spheres of their disciplines. Instead, they use the wide range of approaches to explore meanings - an ambitious aim that leaves the destination wide open; the reader is invited to share in this adventure.

This book presents a first comprehensive overview of existing research on information structure in sign languages. Furthermore, it is combined with novel in-depth studies of Russian Sign Language and Sign Language of the Netherlands. The book discusses how topic, focus, and contrast are marked in the visual modality and what implications this has for theoretical and typological study of information structure. Such issues as syntactic and prosodic markers of information structure and their interactions, relations between different notions of information structure, and grammaticalization of markers of information structure are highlighted. Empirical studies of the two sign languages also showcase different methodologies that are used in such research and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. The book contains a general introduction to the field of information structure and thus can be used by linguists new to the field.

This book investigates formal characteristics and discourse functions of linguistic creativity at the level of idioms in spoken ELF as represented in the Vienna-Oxford International Corpus of English (VOICE). Building on the findings of previous ELF research, the book proposes that creativity might serve as a fundamental concept in accounting for the variation that seems to be central to describing and understanding English as a lingua franca.

Alle drei Werke werden hier kommentiert und in ihrer Bedeutung fur das gegenwartige politische Denken erlautert.Statt sich in politische Schwarmerei zu verirren, beginnt Morus die Utopia mit einer Kritik an den sozialen und politischen Missstanden in England. Drei Generationen spater setzt Tommaso Campanella die Tradition des utopischen Denkens fort und entwirft er, erneut in Form eines Reiseromans, die Utopie eines christlichen und sozialistischen Gemeinwesens. Francis Bacon wiederum entwirft in seinem Reiseroman Neu-Atlantis die Utopie einer wissenschaftlich-technischen Zivilisation.Im vorliegenden Band werden alle drei Utopien gemeinsam durchgangig und systematisch interpretiert, zugleich ihre Argumentationen kritisch beleuchtet. Dabei zeigt sich, dass die in den Werken verhandelten Themen, etwa religiose Toleranz, die Rolle des Privateigentums, die Bedeutung wissenschaftlichen Fortschritts, fur das gegenwartige politische Denken von groem Interesse sind.

It includes a detailed discussion of 120 texts documenting this fascinating and, for the modern image of the Milesians, fundamental Wirkungsgeschichte of the earliest philosophical ideas of Europe.

This monograph begins with a puzzle: a Babylonian text from late 5th century BCE Uruk associating various diseases with bodily organs, which has evaded interpretation. The correct answer may reside in Babylonian astrology, since the development of the zodiac in the late 5th century BCE offered innovative approaches to the healing arts. The zodiac-a means of predicting the movements of heavenly bodies-transformed older divination (such as hemerologies listing lucky and unlucky days) and introduced more favorable magical techniques and medical prescriptions, which are comparable to those found in Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos and non-Hippocratic Greek medicine. Babylonian melothesia (i.e., the science of charting how zodiacal signs affect the human body) offers the most likely solution explaining the Uruk tablet.
