Auf der Grundlage der Konzepte kulturelles Trauma und kulturelles Gedachtnis untersucht die Autorin erstmals umfassend die antike Erinnerung an Lucius Cornelius Sulla uber einen Zeitraum von fast 400 Jahren. Sulla marschierte mit seinem Heer auf Rom, verwustete Athen und plunderte panhellenische Heiligtumer. Nach dem Sieg im Burgerkrieg nahm er den Beinamen Felix, der Gluckliche, an und befahl als Diktator Racheaktionen gegen weite Kreise der Bevolkerung. Bald nach seinem Tod begann eine breite Diskussion, wie die Folgen seines Terrorregimes aufzuarbeiten seien. Schlielich verankerten die Romer Sullas Schreckenstaten als kulturelles Trauma in ihrem kulturellen Gedachtnis. Dies sollte bis weit in die Kaiserzeit hinein Konsequenzen haben. Sulla Felix hatte in unvorstellbarer Weise gegen die Bindung von felicitas an das Wohl der Romer verstoen. Zwar blieb felicitas positiv besetzt und mit der Person des Princeps verbunden, doch der Beiname Felix wurde fur lange Zeit zum Stigma. Die Erinnerung daran, wie sehr Sulla fundamentale Normen verletzt hatte, wirkte uber Jahrhunderte bei Griechen und Romern fort. Das Buch wendet sich an Leser mit Interesse an der Wirkungsgeschichte Sullas von der spaten Republik bis in die Zeit der Severer.

Presents essays on different aspects of Roman sarcophagi. This title focuses on metropolitan sarcophagi, which covers a wide time range from the first century AD to post classical periods (including early Christian sarcophagi and post-classical reception). It also looks at aspects of viewing and representation, iconography, and marble analysis.

Die Landmauer von Konstantinopel gehort zu den bedeutendsten und groten Wehranlagen der Spatantike. Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt die Baugeschichte und Topographie der Theodosianischen Landmauer und der Blachernen-Mauer (sog. Mauer der XIV. Region, Komnenen-Mauer, Mauerabschnitt zwischen Komnenen-Mauer und Goldenem Horn). Schwerpunkte bilden das theodosianische Baukonzept der Doppelmauer, die Anzahl der theodosianischen Turme, die zeitliche Einordnung des Goldenen Tors und des Rahmenwerks am Vortor, die Baugeschichte der Tore, die Ermittlung der byzantinischen Namen der Tore zwischen dem wiederentdeckten Romanos-Tors und EdirnekapA , die Lokalisierung des Polichnion von Kaiser Ioannes V. Palaiologos (Mermerkule), die Identifizierung weiterer Ortlichkeiten im Bereich der Theodosianischen Mauer (Polyandrion, Myriandrion, Mesoteichion), die Topographie und Baugeschichte der Komnenen-Mauer einschlielich der Identifikation der Tore der Blachernen-Mauer sowie das Problem der letzten Kaiserresidenz von Konstantinopel (Tekfur SarayA ). In weiteren Abschnitten werden das Mauerwerk dokumentiert und untersucht und ein Katalog der Spolien vorgelegt. Zwei Exkurse widmen sich dem spatbyzantinischen Straensystem von Konstantinopel und zwei Istanbul-Karten von Piri Reis.

This book concentrates on the effects and social relevance of the art of public speaking, in the Greek speaking world. It pays attention to the performative character of rhetoric. It deals with individual authors.

Who was Tertullian, and what can we know about him? This work explores his social identities, focusing on his North African milieu. Theories from the discipline of social/cultural anthropology, including kinship, class and ethnicity, are accommodated and applied to selections of Tertullian's writings. In light of postcolonial concerns, this study utilizes the categories of Roman colonizers, indigenous Africans and new elites. The third category, new elites, is actually intended to destabilize the other two, denying any "e;essential"e; Roman or African identity. Thereafter, samples from Tertullian's writings serve to illustrate comparisons of his own identities and the identities of his rhetorical opponents. The overall study finds Tertullian's identities to be manifold, complex and discursive. Additionally, his writings are understood to reflect antagonism toward Romans, including Christian Romans (which is significant for his so-called Montanism), and Romanized Africans. While Tertullian accommodates much from Graeco-Roman literature, laws and customs, he nevertheless retains a strongly stated non-Roman-ness and an African-ity, which is highlighted in the present monograph.
