It is undeniable that technology has made a tangible impact on the nature of musical listening. This volume offers a wide-ranging exploration of the relations between sound, technology and listening practices, considered from the complementary perspectives of art music and popular music, music theatre and multimedia, composition and performance.

The new music theatre of the third quarter of the twentieth century presents a research field of great richness. In these years, music theatre became one of the main preoccupations for (especially) young composers digesting the consequences of the revolutionary experiments in musical language that followed the end of the Second World War. Despite the importance of `music theatre¿ in this period, many significant works are now almost forgotten, and very few regularly revived, often because of the inadequacies of surviving notations or the unusual demands of staging.

This book is the first study to offer a wide-ranging investigation of ways in which democracy may thus be found in music. A guiding theme of the volume is that this takes place in a plurality of ways, depending upon the perspective taken to music's manifold relationships, and the idea of democracy being entertained.

For a century and more, the idea of democracy has fuelled musicians'¿imaginations. Seeking to go beyond music's proven capacity to contribute to specific political causes, musicians have explored how aspects of their practice embody democratic principles. This may involve adopting particular approaches to compositional material, performance practice, relationships to audiences, or modes of dissemination and distribution.Finding Democracy in Music is the first study to offer a wide-ranging investigation of ways in which democracy may thus be found in music. Particular attention is given to the contested nature of democracy as a category, and the gaps that frequently arise between utopian aspiration and reality. In so doing, the volume interrogates a key way in which music helps to articulate and shape our social lives and our politics.

By integrating theoretical approaches to the female voice with the musicological investigation of female singers' practices, the contributors to this volume offer fresh viewpoints on the material, symbolic and cultural aspects of the female voice in the twentieth century. Various styles and genres are covered, including Western art music, experimental composition, popular music, urban folk and jazz. The volume offers a substantial and innovative appraisal of the role of the female voice from the perspective of twentieth-century performance practices, the centrality of female singers' experimentations and extended vocal techniques along with the process of the 'subjectivisation' of the voice.
