Part of the "Regional History of England" series, this text provides a regional history of Lancashire and Cheshire from 1540. Amongst the areas covered are population, landowning society, agriculture, transport, industry, towns, politics and society and social and cultural life.

This volume explores the history of England's northern borders - the former counties of Northumberland, Cumberland, Durham, Westmorland and the Furness areas of Lancashire - across 1000 years. The 17th century brought prosperity, and the North East grew into a hub of industrial Britain.

In discussing the regional and local history of South East England, the authors have tried to show the diversity that can be found within the region as well as common characteristics which illustrate local peculiarities. Emphasis is on life as experienced by the great majority of the population.
