Remote sensing is the study of a region from a distance, particularly from an airplane or a spacecraft. This tool is especially applicable to the study of the deserts and arid lands of the Earth because of their immense size and their inaccessibility to detailed study by conventional means.

Satelli te oceanography, as the term is used in this book, is a generic term that means application of the technology of aerospace electromagnetic remote sensing to the study of the oceans. While it is true that no one has written a whole book on plankton nets, volumes have been written about what is found in those nets.

The purpose of this book is to introduce land planners to the principles of remote sensing and to the applications remote sensing has to the land planning process. Maps, too, can be produced from a combination of remote sensing and cartographic techniques - engineering maps, topographic maps, property maps, and a host of other thematic maps.
