This book explores the debate on trauma and peacebuilding and presents the challenges for democratization that the politics of trauma present in transitional periods. It demonstrates how ideas about reconciliation are filtered through ideological lenses and become new ways of articulating communal and ethno-nationalist sentiments. Drawing on the work of Jacques Rancière and Iris Marion Young and with specific reference to the Northern Irish transition, it argues for a shift in focus from the representation of trauma towards its reception and calls for a more substantive approach to the study of democracy and post-conflict peacebuilding. • - Perception and reality in Italy, the UK, and Germany
    von Philip (Trent University Giurlando
    238,00 €

The crisis of the Eurozone has had a significant impact on the politics of Europe. In many countries, the euro was largely interpreted by elites as a development that would ameliorate their nations'' problems. However, recent events have proven the contrary, with the rise of radical right-wing politics and populism across the continent. This book investigates the politics of the euro, with a primary focus on Italy, but also with additional chapters on the UK and Germany. Using a range of original and secondary data, it reconstructs how the euro was interpreted by both elites and non-elites from the late nineties to 2010. By recruiting a large sample of non-elites, it examines perceptions of the euro and the ways in which these views allowed for the justification of painful austerity measures required to enter the Economic and Monetary Union. In doing so, it sheds light on the ways in which non-elites interpret complex political objects like the euro and provides a systemic comparison of the cognitive schema of non-elites and elites. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of the European Union, European politics, Italian politics, comparative politics and political economy.

European Union Enlargement provides a comparative analysis of the post-war European policies of those states that joined the European Union between 1973 and 1995. The volume draws upon new empirical research in order to investigate the policies that these 'newcomer' states have had towards Europe since 1945, with an emphasis on their experience of membership and its possible Europeanising effect. A final comparative chapter draws the national European policies of the 'newcomers' together and outlines what they have brought to the EU. The book also tests integration theories against the available evidence, demonstrating their limited explanatory value and the economic, political and cultural specificity of different national paths towards EU integration.
