The Workshop on Tunable Solid State Lasers for Remote Sensing was held at Stanford University in October 1984 to assess the state of the art in tunable solid state lasers for remote sensing from satellite platforms.

High-power dye lasers provide a versatile tool in many scientific, industrial and medical applications. Individual topics include dispersive resonators, signal amplification, and dye laser pumping by excimer lasers, copper-vapor lasers and flashlamps.

Therefore, practical implementation of the various methods of holographic interferometry must overcome sub stantial difficulties requiring adequate knowledge in diverse areas of science such as coherent optics, laser technology, mechanics, and applied mathe matics.

Images are ubiquitous. The bottom of a water glass, too, can be made to produce an optical image, wildly distorted perhaps, but nevertheless recognizable as an optical image.

The optoacoustic method has by now an almost one-centurY-long history of appl ication in spectroscopy, but it was only with the advent of the laser that it became a convenient and effective method among the vast family of spectroscopy techniques.

I hope that this book will be useful to both practising and prospective workers in the field, since it contains an up-to-date catalogue of measurements of the main properties of submillimetre lasers as well as an introductory review of the measurement techniques themselves.

The conference was attended by 227 scientists from 20 countries includ ing Australia, Austria, Canada, the People's Republic of China, Denmark, Finland, France, the Federal Repulic of Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, the Soviet Union, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Dynamic gratings have been induced in a large number ofsolids, liquids, and gases, and are detected by diffraction, 'forced light scattering' of a third probing beam, or by self-diffraction of the light waves inducing the grating.

The Conference was truly international: 223 scientists represented 19 countries, including Australia, Canada, People's Republic of China, Denmark, Finland, France Germany (FRG), Great Britain, Israel, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and U.S.A.

The organizers acknowledge financial support from the Deutsche Forschungs gemeinschaft, the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the U.S. Air Force European Office of Aerospace Research and Development (EOARD) and the U.S. Army European Research Office, as well as from the companies Coherent Radiation, Spectra Physics and Cryophysics.

The field of optical and laser remote sensing has grown rapidly in recent years. This dynamic growth has been stimulated not only by technological advances in lasers, detectors, and optical system design, but also by the potential application of remote sensing systems to a wide variety of atmo spheric measurements.

Photoelasticity as an experimental method for analyzing stress fields in mechanics was developed in the early thirties by the pioneering works of Mesnager in France and Coker and Filon in England.

The papers included in this volume were presented as a part of the dedication of a new clinical/teaching/research facility for the University of Houston College of Optometry, March 27-31, 1977.

This text treats the fundamentals of optical and infrared detection in terms of the behavior of the radiation field, the physical properties of the detector, and the statistical behavior of the detector output.

The acquisition and interpretation of images is a central capability in almost all scientific and technological domains. Today, the solid-state fabrication capabilities for several types of image sensors has advanced to a point, where uncoooled single-photon electronic imaging will soon become a consumer product.

Develops the subject of X-ray spectroscopy from basic principles and relates the theories to experimental observations. This edition has been updated to include an emphasis on the X-ray laser, appearance potential spectroscopy, synchrotron radiation and high-T superconducting materials.

It was a greatest pleasure for me to learn that Springer-Verlag wished to produce a second edition of my book.
