Speech by Toyosaburo Taniguchi Dr. Kubo, Chairman, Distinguished Guests, and Friends, I am very happy, pleased and honored to be here this evening with so many distinguished guests, friends, and scholars from within this country and from different parts of the world.

This volume deals with physical properties of electrically one-dimensional conductors. Due to this, and also to the rapid progress of research, no introductory book has been available which covers most of the important fields of research on one-dimensional conductors.

First-generation semiconductors could not be properly termed "doped- they were simply very impure.
