This volume examines the practice and theological fundaments of church music between 1530 and 1750. It shows why this epoch is considered to be the golden age of church music. Song, prayer and music function as genuine components of the Christian church service. Intensive theological discussions, describing the effect of music on the individual listener and the congregation as a whole, accompanied the musical works. Playing music in church and at school formed a broad basis for practical life from childhood onwards.The interdisciplinary essays examine the changing justifications for the cultivation of church music; they trace (church) music in practice and describe the change towards the end of this epoch that led to a new understanding of hymns and organ music.

Johanna Pointke beschreibt in diesem Band den Übergang von der Adelsherrschaft zur ökumenischen Gemeinschaft anhand des Kapitels des Freiweltlichen Stifts Börstel. Zu Anfang des letzten Jahrhunderts war die Adelsherrschaft noch weitgehend unhinterfragt. Politische und gesellschaftliche Umbrüche veränderten die Stellung des Kapitels auch im kirchlichen Bereich radikal. Intensive Auseinandersetzungen mit Staat und Kirche waren die Folge. Wie die Autorin aufzeigt, gelang es dennoch, die Selbständigkeit des Stifts zu erhalten. Mit einer neuen Satzung öffneten sich 1956 schließlich Möglichkeiten der geistlichen Erneuerung.

Drei verschiedene Bereiche der Kirchengeschichte werden in diesem Band behandelt. Der erste Teil konzentriert sich auf die Patristik: Von der Frage nach der Entstehung der Seele über die kritische Haltung des Hieronymus zum Bischofsamt und seine Rezeption in der Reformationszeit bis zum Verhältnis von Juden und Christen und dem Athanasianischen Bekenntnis. Im zweiten Teil wird mit vier Studien die besondere Prägung der Frömmigkeit der Deutschen in Russland beleuchtet. Der dritte Teil widmet sich schließlich der Oldenburgischen Kirchengeschichte: drei Arbeiten befassen sich mit dem Hl. Lambertus und der Oldenburger St. Lamberti-Kirche, ein Aufsatz handelt von frühbarocker Theologie und abgeschlossen wird mit einem Beitrag zu den Reformationsjubiläen 1817 und 1917.Three different areas of Church History are touched by the essays collected in this tripartite volume. The first part is formed by seven studies in ancient Christianity, examining the origin of the soul, Jerome's view on bishops (and its reception in reformation times), the Jewish-Christian-relationship and finally the Athanasian Creed. In the second part four studies deal with the history and piety of Germans in Russia in the 19th and 20th Century. The third part collects five essays related to the history of Oldenburg: St. Lambert and its church, baroque theology and the centennials of the reformation in 1817 and 1917.

»Organisation und Finanzierung«, »Kirchliches Arbeitsrecht«, »Diakonische Bildung« sowie »Diakonische Haltung« - das sind die vier Analysekategorien, in denen Maike Mittelsteiner nach diakonischen Identitäten in der Geschichte des Oldenburgischen Landesvereins für Innere Mission fragt. Der Untersuchungsschwerpunkt liegt auf den knapp drei Jahrzehnten der Weimarer Republik sowie der NS-Diktatur. Doch werden auch die Anfänge der Inneren Mission im Oldenburger Land seit dem Jahr 1882 berücksichtigt. Im Blick der detailreichen Untersuchungen sind sowohl der Landesverein insgesamt als auch die einzelnen Einrichtungen in dessen Trägerschaft - u. a. ein Fürsorgeerziehungsheim. Der Titel »Porzellan der Kirche«, ein Zitat aus dem Jahr 1934, bezeugt eine Selbstdeutung der Inneren Mission als fragil und kostbar zugleich."Organization and financing", "Church labor law", "Diaconal education" and "Diaconal attitude" - these are the four analysis categories in which Maike Mittelsteiner asks about diaconal identities in the history of the Oldenburg State Association for Inner Mission. The focus of the investigation is on the nearly three decades of the Weimar Republic and the Nazi dictatorship. However, the beginnings of the Inner Mission in Oldenburg Land since 1882 are also taken into account. The focus of the detailed investigations is both the state association as a whole and the individual institutions in its sponsorship - including a welfare home. The title "Porcelain of the Church", a quote from 1934, testifies to a self-interpretation of the Inner Mission as both fragile and precious at the same time.
