This book describes the creation of a simulation model that is designed to serve as an artificial test market. The market is sufficiently realistic to permit it to be used for experimenting with a wide range of alternative marketing programs for a manufacturer of a branded, frequently purchased food product. The simulator includes characterizations by brand and size of: (1) the rates of retailer promotions (such as retail price discounts, newspaper advertising, displays, signs and banners, special offers, and premiums) as a function of the promotional allowances offered by competing manufacturers; (2) the response of costumers in terms of sales volume to the aforementioned retailer's promotional activities; and (3) the transformation of these volume movement figures into estimates of manufacturer profitability. The simulation model is designed to take advantage of modern time-sharing computation facilities and permit virtually instantaneous assessment of alternatives, and to encourage the combining of executive judgments on current market conditions and probable retailer responses with historical data. In order to develop the component of the stimulator which relates retailer promotional activities to consumer volume movement, econometric methods are used to analyze a remarkably complete set of data in such a way that the reader may follow the author's thought processes as they work through complex quantitative techniques. The econometric model that they develop is a multiple-equation model. The use of this type of model is relatively new in marketing, although econometricians have been familiar with these techniques for a number of years. The present study develops and discusses the special statistical methods required to estimate the parameters of such a model and postulates a specific model linking the demand for a given brand and size to the promotional activities of all the brand-size combinations present in the marketplace for the product in question.

Beginning with a detailed analysis of all aspects of Sino-Soviet relations from November 1963 through November 1965, this summary takes up where the author's The Sino-Soviet Rift left off and, like it, includes the text of, or key excerpts from, the main documents of the period. This book first deals with Khrushchev's unsuccessful attempt to reactivate the collective expulsion or condemnation of the Chinese by an overwhelming majority of the world Communist movement, the Chinese gains arising from his failure, and the resultant growth of pluralistic tendencies among his supporters. After Khrushchev's fall, the book turns to the more indirect and therefore more successful policies of Brezhnev and Kosygin against the Chinese.Beginning with the seventh Chinese Comment, the documentation includes Togliatti's Testament and the April 1964 Romanian Central Committee Statement and concludes with the October 27, 1965, Pravda restatement of post-Khrushchev foreign policy and the November 11, 1965, Chinese attack on Moscow's united front policy on the Vietnam crisis.

The coming of Sino-U.S. and Soviet-U.S. détente in the early 1970's and the resulting shift in international relationships produced a revolution in world diplomacy whose repercussions are still being felt. The World and the Great-Power Triangles sets up a framework for describing this dramatic change in global affairs in terms of its implications for regional politics in key areas of the world. In the introductory chapter, William E. Griffith analyzes events leading to the breakup of the alignment of the cold war era and the reaarangement of the great powers into two triangles: a political-military grouping made up of the United States, Western Europe, and Japan. In each of the subsequent chapters, a well-known writer on international affairs discusses the operation of this triangular world politics in his particular are of expertise. The authors' analyses of recent history and current events illuminate the complex ways in which national and international politics interact. The book brings together a wealth of data and provides a survey that should be of use to scholars and students of world affairs.

Rapidly quenched metals are the subject of an increasing research effort, spurred on both by advancements in metal processing techniques that have made commercial utilization of these metals feasible and by the recent discoveries of unique and potentially useful properties of these materials. Among the processes that have been perfected is splat cooling, in which a liquid metal is cooled by being spread as a thin film against a metal substrate. Other processes involve vacuum evaporation, sputtering, and chemical deposition. Such processes are considered in this book, but its main emphasis is on the remarkable physical, mechanical, chemical, magnetic, electronic, and other properties of rapidly quenched metals.

  • - A Study of DuPont Rayon Plants
von Samuel (Ben-Gurion University of The Negev) Hollander
    36,00 €

An extraordinary opportunity offered by the Du Pont Company gave Professor Hollander free access both to all detailed cost and much investment data related to rayon manufacture at a number of plants, covering a period of thirty years and to a wide range of informed personnel and officers. These data enabled Professor Hollander to make an unprecedented study of a large industrial firm for the purpose of measuring the contribution of various sources of improvement to increased efficiency. From the mass of information available, he has selected sound technical details and concepts, excluded all irrelevant material, and presented a carefully organized case study showing how technical change accounts for a very high proportion of the increases in productivity. Specifically, this information includes descriptions of the contributions of various types of technical change to production cost reductions, quantitative estimates of the contributions of technical change and economies of scale to increased efficiency, and analyses of the relation between technical change and investment and of the sources of new technology. The microeconomic approach is related to certain macrostudies of productivity increase, and several policy implications are drawn. This study should be of great interest to a wide audience including economists, economic historians, and technologists. All those concerned with the problems of economic growth, industrial structure, patent protection, technical invention, research and development, and the general progress of civilian industrial technology will find this book a valuable addition to their libraries.

  • - Traditional Instruments and Techniques
    von Sang-Woon Jeon
    49,00 €

It might surprise Western scientists to learn that there were periods in Korean history when the level of scientific achievement was the highest in Asia. This is the proposition that Dr. Sang-woon Jeon sets forth in the first comprehensive and systematic survey of Korean science to appear in any Western language. Dr. Jeon points up Korea's unique contributions to the history of science and technology as well as the country's role as a bridge between Japanese and Chinese science and civilization. Much of his discussion of Korean science focuses on instruments which he describes in great detail in chapters on astronomy, metereology, physics and physical technology, and geography and cartography.Faced with the considerable difficulty of writing a history based on inadequate written records, Dr. Jeon has made use of available artifacts and other materials which have received little attention either in East Asia or the West. He has also summarized historical research in Korean science to the present and compiled an extensive bibliography.

  • - An Investigation of the French Charges
    von Allan W. Johnstone
    31,00 €

The atmosphere for furtber extension of U.S. economic influence in France bas become increasingly inhospitable; French officials have freely admitted their concern and have made proposals to their fellow members in tbe European Economic Community for control of foreign investment. The purpose of this book is to weigh the evidence supporting the French charges that American companies are exercising excesive management control of their French subsidiaries, often in a manner inimical to legitiluate French national interests, and to provide an understanding of Gallic attitudes toward and capabilities for regulating U.S. investment in France. The events provoking French reaction are reviewed and the dimensions of U.S. direct investment are examined, based on studies of twenty-four large American companies with French snbsidiaries. The vulnerability of foreign investment to new French regulation is also considered. The author has skillfully worked through a number of conventional prejudices to arrive at his conclusions, and from these conclusions he anticipates the future policies of the French Government with respect to U.S. direct investment. This timely book should be of particular value to economists, businessmen, and all those involved in American investment abroad. Anyone concerned with the current problems of foreign trade will be interested in this volume.
