This text reflects the present state-of-the-art in Middle English linguistics. Internal processes of linguistic change are assessed in their context in relation to socio-historical, sociocultural, textual, situational, as well as regional and contact-based factors causing variation in language.

Contains 12 papers on negation in the history of English, most of them dealing with multiple negation or the mobility of the negative element. The contributions represent different theoretical and methodological approaches. Other papers seek functional explanations of the investigated problems.

Focusing on variation and genre styles within the empirical framework, the five studies included in this volume aim to provide insights into: the development of verb constructions with "be" and "have"; expository apposition: and genre-specific features of expressions of affect and attitude in text.
