Al though the main body of the text generally encompasses the results of the author of the given part of the book, the materials of other Soviet and foreign researchers working in the particular field are also incorporated in the interest of clarity and completeness.

This is the third work in a series of monographs* written by a col lective group of authors and is devoted to the physical mechanisms of specific ultrasonic technological processes that have already come into general use, as well as those which have just begun to enjoy practical applications.

3 Chapter 1 Acoustic Atomization of Liquids The atomization of liquids by ultrasound (at a frequency of 300 kHz) was discovered in the classical studies of Wood and Loomis [1].

Although good books have appeared on ultrasonics in general and ultrasonic transducers in particular in which, for obvious reasons, materials play an important part, no comprehensive treatise is available that represents the state-of-the-art on modern ultrasonic transducer materials.
