This book is an outgrowth of courses given by me for graduate students at York University in the past ten years. The actual writing of the book in this form was carried out at York University, Peking University, the Academia Sinica in Beijing, the University of California at Irvine, Osaka University, and the University of Delaware. The idea of writing this book was ?rst conceived in the summer of 1989, and the protracted period of gestation was due to my daily duties as a professor at York University. I would like to thank Professor K. C. Chang, of Peking University; Professor Shujie Li, of the Academia Sinica in Beijing; Professor Martin Schechter, of the University of California at Irvine; Professor Michihiro Nagase, of Osaka University; and Professor M. Z. Nashed, of the University of Delaware, for providing me with stimulating environments for the exchange of ideas and the actual writing of the book. We study in this book the properties of pseudo-differential operators arising in quantum mechanics, ?rst envisaged in [33] by Hermann Weyl, as bounded linear 2 n operators on L (R ). Thus, it is natural to call the operators treated in this book Weyl transforms.

A Course in Topological Combinatorics is the first undergraduate textbook on the field of topological combinatorics, a subject that has become an active and innovative research area in mathematics over the last thirty years with growing applications in math, computer science, and other applied areas. Topological combinatorics is concerned with solutions to combinatorial problems by applying topological tools. In most cases these solutions are very elegant and the connection between combinatorics and topology often arises as an unexpected surprise. The textbook covers topics such as fair division, graph coloring problems, evasiveness of graph properties, and embedding problems from discrete geometry. The text contains a large number of figures that support the understanding of concepts and proofs. In many cases several alternative proofs for the same result are given, and each chapter ends with a series of exercises. The extensive appendix makes the book completely self-contained.The textbook is well suited for advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate mathematics students. Previous knowledge in topology or graph theory is helpful but not necessary. The text may be used as a basis for a one- or two-semester course as well as a supplementary text for a topology or combinatorics class.

This book has a clear and thorough exposition of the classical theory of algebraic numbers, and contains a large number of exercises as well as worked out numerical examples. The introduction is a recapitulation of results about principal ideal domains, unique factorization domains and commutative fields. Part one is devoted to residue classes and quadratic residues. In part two one finds the study of algebraic integers, ideals, units, class numbers, the theory of decomposition, inertia and ramification of ideals. part three is devoted to Kummer s theory of cyclotomic fields, and includes Bernoulli numbers and the proof of Fermat s Last Theorem for regular prime exponents. Finally, in part four, the emphasis is on analytical methods and it includes Dirichlet s Theorem on primes in arithmetic progressions, the theorem of Chebotarev and class number formulas. A careful study of this book will provide a solid background to the learning of more recent topics, as suggested at the end of the book.

This book provides an introduction to complex analysis in several variables. The viewpoint of integral representation theory together with Grauert's bumping method offers a natural extension of single variable techniques to several variables analysis and leads rapidly to important global results. Applications focus on global extension problems for CR functions, such as the Hartogs-Bochner phenomenon and removable singularities for CR functions. Three appendices on differential manifolds, sheaf theory and functional analysis make the book self-contained.Each chapter begins with a detailed abstract, clearly demonstrating the structure and relations of following chapters. New concepts are clearly defined and theorems and propositions are proved in detail. Historical notes are also provided at the end of each chapter.Clear and succinct, this book will appeal to post-graduate students, young researchers seeking an introduction to holomorphic function theory in several variables and lecturers seeking a concise book on the subject.

This text is a rigorous treatment of the basic qualitative theory of ordinary differential equations, at the beginning graduate level. Designed as a flexible one-semester course but offering enough material for two semesters, A Short Course covers core topics such as initial value problems, linear differential equations, Lyapunov stability, dynamical systems and the Poincaré¿Bendixson theorem, and bifurcation theory, and second-order topics including oscillation theory, boundary value problems, and Sturm¿Liouville problems. The presentation is clear and easy-to-understand, with figures and copious examples illustrating the meaning of and motivation behind definitions, hypotheses, and general theorems. A thoughtfully conceived selection of exercises together with answers and hints reinforce the reader's understanding of the material. Prerequisites are limited to advanced calculus and the elementary theory of differential equations and linear algebra, making the text suitable for seniorundergraduates as well.

ThetheoryofstronglycontinuoussemigroupsoflinearoperatorsonBanach spaces, operator semigroups for short, has become an indispensable tool in a great number of areas of modern mathematical analysis. In our Springer Graduate Text [EN00] we presented this beautiful theory, together with many applications, and tried to show the progress made since the pub- cation in 1957 of the now classical monograph [HP57] by E. Hille and R. Phillips. However, the wealth of results exhibited in our Graduate Text seems to have discouraged some of the potentially interested readers. With the present text we o?er a streamlined version that strictly sticks to the essentials. We have skipped certain parts, avoided the use of sophisticated arguments,and,occasionally,weakenedtheformulationofresultsandm- i?ed the proofs. However, to a large extent this book consists of excerpts taken from our Graduate Text, with some new material on positive se- groups added in Chapter VI. We hope that the present text will help students take their ?rst step into this interesting and lively research ?eld. On the other side, it should provide useful tools for the working mathematician. Acknowledgments This book is dedicated to our students. Without them we would not be able to do and to enjoy mathematics. Many of them read previous versions when it served as the text of our Seventh Internet Seminar 2003/04. Here Genni Fragnelli, Marc Preunkert and Mark C. Veraar were among the most active readers. Particular thanks go to Tanja Eisner, Vera Keicher, Agnes Radl for proposing considerable improvements in the ?nal version.

The calculus of variations has a long history of interaction with other branches of mathematics such as geometry and differential equations, and with physics, particularly mechanics. More recently, the calculus of variations has found applications in other fields such as economics and electrical engineering. Much of the mathematics underlying control theory, for instance, can be regarded as part of the calculus of variations. This book is an introduction to the calculus of variations for mathematicians and scientists. The reader interested primarily in mathematics will find results of interest in geometry and differential equations. I have paused at times to develop the proofs of some of these results, and discuss briefly various topics not normally found in an introductory book on this subject such as the existence and uniqueness of solutions to boundary-value problems, the inverse problem, and Morse theory. I have made ¿passive use¿ of functional analysis (in particular normed vector spaces) to place certain results in context and reassure the mathematician that a suitable framework is available for a more rigorous study. For the reader interested mainly in techniques and applications of the calculus of variations, I leavened the book with numerous examples mostly from physics. In addition, topics such as Hamilton¿s Principle, eigenvalue approximations, conservation laws, and nonholonomic constraints in mechanics are discussed. More importantly, the book is written on two levels. The technical details for many of the results can be skipped on the initial reading. The student can thus learn the main results in each chapter and return as needed to the proofs for a deeper understanding.

The following lecture notes correspond to a course taught for several years, first at the University of Paris-Nord (France) and then at the University of Bologna (Italy). They are mainly addressed to nonspecialists in the subject, and their purpose is to present in a pedagogical way most of the techniques used in the microlocal treatment of semiclassical problems coming from quantum physics. Both the standard Coo pseudodifferential calculus and the analytic microlocal analysis are developed, in a context that remains intentionally global so that only the relevant difficulties of the theory are encountered. The main original ity lies in the fact that we derive all the main features of analytic microlocal analysis from a single a priori estimate, which turns out to be elementary once the Coo pseudodifferential calculus is established. Various detailed exercises are given at the end of the main chapters, most of them being easily solvable by students. Besides illustrating the main results of the lecture, their aim is also to introduce the reader to various further developments of the theory, such as the functional calculus of pseudodifferential operators, properties of the analytic wave front set, Gevrey classes, the use of coherent states, the notion of semiclassical measures, WKB constructions. Applications to the study of the Schrodinger operator are also discussed in the text, so that they may help the understanding of new notions or general results where they appear by replacing them in the context of quantum mechanics.
