Are current patterns within women's occupations a function of external limitations on initial ambitions, or do women simply prefer distinct types of work? Including case studies of fire fighting and teaching, this book offers a qualitative exploration of girls' and women's reported journeys towards their work choices.

The author looks at conflicts between human rights for women and religious integrity, through family religious ideology and questions of relativism, privacy and agency. The study shows that theological resistance and political and social inhibitors can, ironically, make the human rights concept inappropriate for gaining rights for religious women.

Why do some Western women choose to join Christian and Islamic revivalist movements in the present day? This study aims particularly to establish what the attractions might be for women who choose to swim against the prevailing consumerist current and affiliate themselves with such groups in a liberal democracy.

This is an original study of women self-identified as working-class and lesbian, showing the significance of class and sexuality in their biographies, everyday lives and identities. It provides insight, a critique of queer theory and an empirical interrogation of the embodied, spatial and material intersection of class and sexuality.
