Unter Geschichte der israelitischen Religion, wie unter Theologie des Alten Testaments versteht man diejenige Disziplin, welche sich mit der Darstellung des religiösen und ethischen Inhalts des Alten Testaments befasst. Korrelat ist die Darstellung des entsprechenden Inhalts des Neuen Testaments. Und beide Teile zusammen bilden die Geschichte der biblischen Religion oder die biblische Theologie. Die Wichtigkeit dieser Disziplin für den christlichen Prediger ist so selbstverständlich, dass sie kaum braucht hervorgehoben zu werden. Denn er ist darauf angewiesen, die christliche Religion zu verkündigen, deren älteste Schriftdenkmale in dem Neuen Testament enthalten sind, und der christlich-evangelische Charakter seiner Verkündigung muss sich doch eben aus dem Einklang mit der urapostolischen erweisen.
