A Note From The Author The fictional Kim Bailey of this story displays many traits one hopes today's youth will develop: determination, persistence, assertiveness, resourcefulness, and confidence. But Kim also makes two mistakes the author wishes to strongly caution children against. First, Kim is definitely wrong to purposely mislead her family by misrepresenting and withholding the truth. Pet ownership is a serious responsibility which must be shared by children and grownups alike. Children cannot raise pets, even for a few months, without assistance. Secondly, there are two litters of kittens in this story which, if not spayed or neutered could result in as many as 155,551 offspring in just 5 years of uncontrolled breeding. It is hoped that this story will promote and encourage a family discussion of the importance of spaying or neutering a pet. No matter how fun, or even educational, just ONE litter of kittens or puppies may seem, it is not the morally right decision in light of the fact that in the U.S. alone 4-5 million unwanted animals are destroyed each year. The author wants to assure the reader that Homework went to the vet to be spayed as soon as she came to live at Grandma's house!
Ava is seven years old when her grandmother offers her a very special trip for her birthday. She lives in New Bern, North Carolina, but her grandmother's gift gives her the chance to visit Cali, Colombia. Ava is thrilled but also a little hesitant. She doesn't speak much Spanish, and she's never been on a long flight across the ocean before.But her grandmother used to live in Cali, and Ava has heard all her amazing stories and becomes curious about the country of Colombia and its people. Will they be very different from Ava? Will she fit in? When she meets Salomé-also seven years old-Ava's worries soon disappear as she realizes Salomé's family is quite similar to her own.With Salomé's help, Ava discovers new food, cat and frog art, and when not to take a picture. She also learns that a goat is not always a goat! The girls laugh, have fun, and dance 'til they drop, all the while learning new words in a foreign tongue. Ava finds that making new friends can happen anywhere, and she can't wait to return to Colombia for more adventures.
